    The fatigue properties and damage of the corroded steel bars under the constant-amplitude fatigue load

    We obtained the corroded steel bars by conducting electrically-accelerated corrosion tests. Then, to investigate the effects of the corrosion ratio and the stress amplitude on the fatigue life, and to further study the damage evolution law under corrosion and fatigue loads, we performed axial fatigue tests on 13 steel bars with various corrosion ratios. The laboratory results show that the fatigue life is logarithmical linear to the stress amplitude, and the increase in corrosion ratio leads to the accelerated decrease in the fatigue life. In addition, the increase in stress amplitude can accelerate the fatigue damage, and further decreases the fatigue life. With the laboratory data, we further established a model to predict the fatigue life of the steel bars with various corrosion ratios. The evolution of the residual strains includes the relatively rapid increase, stable increase and rapid increase stages. Moreover, we developed an evolution equation for the residual strain, and this equation can properly describe the laboratory results. Furthermore, considering the fatigue damage, we proposed a constitutive model to describe the stress-strain curve of the corroded steel bar under static tension. The comparison shows that the calculated stress curves agree well with the laboratory curves

    Complex phase diagram and supercritical matter

    Supercritical region is often described as uniform with no definite transitions. The distinct behaviors of the matter therein, e.g., as liquid-like and gas-like, however, indicate their should-be different belongings. Here, we provide a mathematical description of these phenomena by revisiting the Lee-Yang (LY) theory and using a complex phase diagram, e.g. a 4-D one with complex TT and pp. Beyond the critical point, the 2-D phase diagram with real TT and pp, i.e. the physical plane, is free of LY zeros and hence no criticality emerges. But off-plane zeros in this 4-D scenario still come into play by inducing critical anomalies for different physical properties. This is evidenced by the correlation between the Widom lines and LY edges in van der Waals model and water. The present distinct criteria to distinguish the supercritical matter manifest the high-dimensional feature of the phase diagram: e.g. when the LY zeros of complex TT or pp are projected onto the physical plane, a boundary defined by isobaric heat capacity CpC_p or adiabatic compression coefficient KTK_T emanates. These results demonstrate the incipient phase transition nature of the supercritical matter

    Atomistic investigation of the influence of hydrogen on dislocation nucleation during nanoindentation in Ni and Pd

    The effects of hydrogen charging on the mechanical response of FCC Ni and Pd under nanoindentation are systematically investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. Simulations consider a random H distribution and time scales prevent any diffusion of H during the simulations. Hydrogen charging is then found to reduce the threshold load for dislocation nucleation, i.e., the pop-in load, but only to a limited extent. After pop-in, the indentation response is largely independent of the presence of H. Furthermore, the influence of hydrogen charging on the pop-in load originates only from the hydrogen-induced swelling of the lattice. That is, H does not directly influence dislocation nucleation, either in terms of facilitating initial slip or interacting with the nascent dislocation(s). These findings suggest that rate dependent processes, either associated with fluctuating nucleation or H transport, are necessary to interpret experimental observations of hydrogen-influenced reductions in the pop-in load.     Quality test of clamping connection of transmission lines across tensile line

    This paper develops a new technology for the quality inspection of the transmission line that is important across the tensile clamp. The new technology mainly based on the ultrasonic pulse echo thickness measurement mechanism tests the thickness of the aluminum sleeve after crimping the tensile clamp to reflect the relative position of the aluminum sleeve and the steel anchor after the crimping, thereby judging whether there is a crimping positioning defect. At the same time, it is supplemented by steel anchor model comparison, crimping position length comparison, and crimping to margin detection to determine whether the transmission line crimping quality is qualified

    Effect of polysaccharide from the root of Bupleurum Chinese DC and Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd on hydrogen peroxide-induced myocardial apoptosis

    Purpose: To investigate the protective effect of polysaccharide (BRP) from the root of Bupleurum Chinese DC. and Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. on cardiomyocyte cells. Methods: Response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was performed to optimize the extraction conditions for BRP. The effect of BRP on cardiomyocyte cell apoptosis was evaluated in H9c2 cells treated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Cell viability was determined by CCK-8 assay, while oxidative stress levels in H9c2 cells, including lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and creatine kinase (CK) were determined using commercial kits following the manufacture’s instruction. mRNA expressions (caspase-3, caspase-8, caspase-9 and Fas) were determined by quantitative real time-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results: The obtained optimal extraction conditions for BRP was as follows: extraction time (1.43 h), ratio of water to the raw material (30 mL/g) and extraction times (2 times). BRP (200, 400, 600 and 800 μg/mL) significantly increased the cell viability of H2O2 induced H9c2 cells (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively). BRP (200, 400 and 800 μg/mL) significantly decreased LDH and CK levels (p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively). However, BRP increased levels of SOD (200, 400 and 800 μg/mL, p < 0.05) and CAT (400 and 800 μg/mL, p < 0.05) in H9c2 cells. BRP significantly downregulated mRNA expressions of Caspase-3, Caspase-8, Caspase-9 and Fas (200, 400 and 800 μg/mL, p < 0.01) in H9c2 cells induced by H2O2. Conclusion: BRP protects cardiomyocyte against apoptosis via inhibition of oxidative stress and mitochondria-mediated intrinsic apoptosis, and thus, may be potential therapeutic agent for the management of cardiovascular diseases.     Distribution and conservation status of Camellia longzhouensis (Theaceae), a critically endangered plant species endemic to southern China

    Camellia longzhouensis (Theaceae) is an endemic evergreen shrub or small tree with a distribution restricted to South China. It is listed as Grade-II in the National Key Protected Wild Plants List. In this study, we surveyed its distribution, examined its population structure, identified factors affecting its survival, and reassessed its extinction risk. We found that C. longzhouensis was only distributed in the Nonggang National Nature Reserve and the surrounding area. Its individuals only grew under the secondary forest canopy in the karst mountain. A total of 58 individuals of C. longzhouensis in three sub-populations were found. Soil fertility and understory light availability were the main habitat factors influencing the survival of C. longzhouensis. Anthropogenic disturbances and reproductive obstacles have caused a low seed-setting rate, poor seedling survival, and a lack of adult plants of C. longzhouensis in the natural habitat. The population structure of C. longzhouensis is spindle-shaped, indicating poor natural regeneration and inhibited seedling recruitment. Cleistanthus petelotii had a significant positive interspecific interaction with C. longzhouensis in the community. Based on the information obtained here and IUCN criterion C2ai, we recommend that C. longzhouensis be categorized in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List as Critically Endangered. We also developed a comprehensive protection strategy, consisting of in situ conservation, ex situ conservation, reintroduction, and commercial utilization. This strategy can be readily applied to protect other endangered plants with economic value in karst poor regions

    Parent-adolescent interaction and risk of adolescent internet addiction: a population-based study in Shanghai

    Abstract Background Family-based intervention is essential for adolescents with behavioral problems. However, limited data are available on the relationship between family-based factors and adolescent internet addiction (AIA). We aimed to examine this relationship using a representative sample of Shanghai adolescents. Methods In October 2007, a total of 5122 adolescents were investigated from 16 high schools via stratified-random sampling in Shanghai. Self-reported and anonymous questionnaires were used to assess parent-adolescent interaction and family environments. AIA was assessed by DRM-52 Scale, developed from Young’s Internet-addiction Scale, using seven subscales to evaluate psychological symptoms of AIA. Results Adjusting for adolescents’ ages, genders, socio-economic status, school performances and levels of the consumption expenditure, strong parental disapproval of internet-use was associated with AIA (vs. parental approval, OR = 2.20, 95% CI: 1.24-3.91). Worse mother-adolescent relationships were more significantly associated with AIA (OR = 3.79, 95% CI: 2.22-6.48) than worse father-adolescent relationships (OR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.10-2.80). Marital status of “married-but-separated” and family structure of “left-behind adolescents” were associated with symptoms of some subscales. When having high monthly allowance, resident students tended to develop AIA but commuter students did not. Family social-economic status was not associated with the development of AIA. Conclusions The quality of parent-adolescent relationship/communication was closely associated with the development of AIA, and maternal factors were more significantly associated with development of AIA than paternal factors.
