    Supramolecular assembly of cucurbit[6]uril and N-butyl-4-pyrrolidinopyridine

    The nature of the supramolecular host-guest complex involving 4-pyrrolidinopyridine (BuPC4) and cucurbit[6]uril (Q[6]) has been investigated by NMR and UV spectroscopy, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). The results revealed that the alkyl chain of the guest BuPC4 is located inside the cavity of the Q[6] host, whereas the other section of the BuPC4 guest remains outside of the portal

    Design and evaluate the performance of a mechanical system for the release of Harmonia axyridis adults

    Harmonia axyridis (H. axyridis) is the natural enemy of many aphid species. Traditional manual release of H. axyridis adults requires substantial manpower, and release efficiency is low. Automatic mechanical devices can improve the efficiency of delivery. Based on H. axyridis adults’ morphological size, a prototype release system for H. axyridis was designed, which considered the adhesion characteristics of H. axyridis adults. According to the measured physical characteristics of H. axyridis adults, the structural parameters of the mechanical system for the release of the H. axyridis adults were determined. The relationship of the quantity of release, the impeller rotating speed, and the time for the release of H. axyridis adults were constructed. The mechanism can quantitatively adjust the number of H. axyridis adults to meet a certain H. axyridis–aphids ratio. Combining the image processing technology with the camera function of a mobile phone, the maximum cross-sectional area method was used to count the H. axyridis adults in the designated area. Results showed that the impeller rotating speed had a significant effect on the survival rate of the H. axyridis adults. When the airflow velocities were 29.5 m/s and 38.3 m/s, the survival rates of the H. axyridis adults were 93.8% and 94.5% at 4.2 rpm. The adhesion rate of the H. axyridis adults was 2.5%–4.6%.     A study of the interaction between inverted cucurbit[7]uril and symmetric viologens

    The interaction between inverted cucuribit[7]uril (iQ[7]) and a series of symmetric viologen derivatives bearing aliphatic substituents of variable length, namely dicationic dialkyl-4,4′-bipyridinium guests where the alkyl is CH₃(CH₂)n with n = 0 to 6, has been studied in aqueous solution by ¹H NMR spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry and mass spectrometry. In the case of both n = 5 (HV ²⁺) and 6 (SV²⁺), single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed the composition to be [(iQ[7])₂(HV)₂][CdCl₃Br][H₃O+]₂[H₂O]₁₂.₅ and (iQ[7])₂(C7-SV)₁.₅[CdCl₄]₄(H₃O⁺)₅(H₂O)₈, respectively, with both adopting an external B-type structure (the alkyl chains of the viologen reside within the iQ[7])

    Increase in neuroexcitability of unmyelinated C-type vagal ganglion neurons during initial postnatal development of visceral afferent reflex functions

    BACKGROUND: Baroreflex gain increase up closely to adult level during initial postnatal weeks, and any interruption within this period will increase the risk of cardiovascular problems in later of life span. We hypothesize that this short period after birth might be critical for postnatal development of vagal ganglion neurons (VGNs). METHODS: To evaluate neuroexcitability evidenced by discharge profiles and coordinate changes, ion currents were collected from identified A- and C-type VGNs at different developmental stages using whole-cell patch clamping. RESULTS: C-type VGNs underwent significant age-dependent transition from single action potential (AP) to repetitive discharge. The coordinate changes between TTX-S and TTX-R Na(+) currents were also confirmed and well simulated by computer modeling. Although 4-AP or iberiotoxin age dependently increased firing frequency, AP duration was prolonged in an opposite fashion, which paralleled well with postnatal changes in 4-AP- and iberiotoxin-sensitive K(+) current activity, whereas less developmental changes were verified in A-types. CONCLUSION: These data demonstrate for the first time that the neuroexcitability of C-type VGNs increases significantly compared with A-types within initial postnatal weeks evidenced by AP discharge profiles and coordinate ion channel changes, which explain, at least in part, that initial postnatal weeks may be crucial for ontogenesis in visceral afferent reflex function
