Investigate the impacts of assimilating satellite rainfall estimates on rainstorm forecast over southwest United States
Using the MM5-4DVAR system, a monsoon rainstorm case over southern Arizona (5-6 August 2002) was investigated for the influence of assimilating satellite rainfall estimates on precipitation forecasts. A set of numerical experiments was conducted with multiple configurations including using 20-km or 30-km grid distances and none or 3-h or 6-h assimilation time windows. Results show that satellite rainfall assimilation can improve the rainstorm-forecasting pattern and amount to some extent. The minimization procedure of 4DVAR is sensitive to model spatial resolution and the assimilation time window. The 3-h assimilation window with hourly rainfall data works well for the 6-h forecast, and for 12-h or longer forecasts, a 6-h assimilation window will be requested. The impact of assimilating rainfall derived from radar and satellites on rainstorm forecasts over the Southwestern United States is discussed. The major advantage of 4DVAR is the use of full model dynamics and physics to assimilate multiple-time-level observation data. Rainfall assimilation via 4DVAR is used to improve the moisture distributions in model IC. It is found that by using 4DVAR to generate model IC, the precipitation intensity and patterns can be improved substantially over the mid-latitude plain regions

Influence of assimilating rainfall derived from WSR-88D radar on the rainstorm forecasts over the southwestern United States
In this study, the impact of rainfall assimilation on the forecasts of convective rainfall over the mountainous areas in the southwestern United States is investigated. The rainfall is derived from the U.S. Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar network, and the fifth-generation Mesoscale Model (MM5) Four-Dimensional Variational (4DVAR) system is employed in the study. We evaluate the rainfall assimilation skill through two rainstorm events (5-6 August and 11-12 September 2002) that occurred over the southwestern United States in 2002. A series of experiments for the two cases is conducted. The results show that the minimization process in the 4DVAR is sensitive to the length of assimilation window and error variance in the observation data. Assimilation of rainfall can produce a better short-range precipitation forecast. However, the time range of improved forecasts is limited to about 15 hours with the model resolution of 20 km. It is indicated that rainfall assimilation produces more realistic moisture divergence and temperature fields in the initial conditions for the two cases. Therefore the forecast of rainstorms is closer to observations in both quantity and pattern. Copyright 2006 by the American Geophysical Union
SDF1 Gene Variation Is Associated with Circulating SDF1 alpha Level and Endothelial Progenitor Cell Number-The Bruneck Study
BACKGROUND: Stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF1) and its receptor CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) play a critical role in progenitor cell homing, mobilization and differentiation. It would be interesting to assess the predictive value of SDF-1alpha level for EPC number, and to ascertain whether there is a relationship between SDF1 gene variation, plasma SDF-1alpha level, and the number and function of circulating EPCs. We also tested whether EPC number and function was related to CXCR4 gene variation.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We genotyped a cohort of individuals who participated in the Bruneck Study for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the SDF1 and CXCR4 genes, and measured blood SDF1alpha level as well as EPC number and function. SDF1alpha levels were correlated with age, gender, alcohol consumption, circulating reticulocyte numbers, and concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase-9, C-reactive protein, cystatin C, fibrinogen and homocytein. In blood samples taken in 2005, EPC number was inversely associated with SDF1alpha level (p<0.001). EPC number in 2005 was also inversely associated with SDF1alpha level in 2000 (p = 0.009), suggesting a predictive value of plasma SDF1alpha level for EPC number. There was an association between the SDF1 gene rs2297630 SNP A/A genotype, increased SDF1alpha level (p = 0.002) and lower EPC number (p = 0.006).
CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that a SDF1 gene variation (rs2297630) has an influence on SDF1alpha level and circulating EPC number, and that plasma SDF1alpha level is a predictor of EPC number
Theoretical spin-wave dispersions in the antiferromagnetic phase AF1 of MnWO based on the polar atomistic model in P2
The spin wave dispersions of the low temperature antiferromagnetic phase
(AF1) MnWO have been numerically calculated based on the recently reported
non-collinear spin configuration with two different canting angles. A
Heisenberg model with competing magnetic exchange couplings and single-ion
anisotropy terms could properly describe the spin wave excitations, including
the newly observed low-lying energy excitation mode =0.45 meV
appearing at the magnetic zone centre. The spin wave dispersion and intensities
are highly sensitive to two differently aligned spin-canting sublattices in the
AF1 model. Thus this study reinsures the otherwise hardly provable hidden polar

Excitation of nonlinear ion acoustic waves in CH plasmas
Excitation of nonlinear ion acoustic wave (IAW) by an external electric field
is demonstrated by Vlasov simulation. The frequency calculated by the
dispersion relation with no damping is verified much closer to the resonance
frequency of the small-amplitude nonlinear IAW than that calculated by the
linear dispersion relation. When the wave number increases,
the linear Landau damping of the fast mode (its phase velocity is greater than
any ion's thermal velocity) increases obviously in the region of in which the fast mode is weakly damped mode. As a result, the deviation
between the frequency calculated by the linear dispersion relation and that by
the dispersion relation with no damping becomes larger with
increasing. When is not large, such as , the nonlinear IAW can be excited by the driver with the linear frequency
of the modes. However, when is large, such as
, the linear frequency can not be applied to exciting the
nonlinear IAW, while the frequency calculated by the dispersion relation with

Association of serum-soluble heat shock protein 60 with carotid atherosclerosis: clinical significance determined in a follow-up study
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous work has shown that soluble heat shock protein 60 (HSP60; sHSP60), present in circulating blood, is associated with carotid atherosclerosis. In the current evaluation, we tested the hypothesis that sHSP60 levels are associated with the progression of carotid arteriosclerosis, prospectively. METHODS: The association of sHSP60 with early atherogenesis (5-year development and progression of nonstenotic carotid plaques) was investigated as part of the population-based prospective Bruneck Study. The current study focused on the follow-up period between 1995 and 2000 and, thus, included 684 subjects. RESULTS: sHSP60 levels measured in 1995 and 2000 were highly correlated (r=0.40; P<0.001), indicating consistency over a 5-year period. Circulating HSP60 levels were significantly correlated with antilipopolysaccharide and anti-HSP60 antibodies. It was also elevated in subjects with chronic infection (top quintile group of HSP60, among subjects with and without chronic infection: 23.8% versus 17.0%; P=0.003 after adjustment for age and sex). HSP60 levels were significantly associated with early atherogenesis, both in the entire population (multivariate odds ratio, for a comparison between quintile group V versus I+II: 2.0 [1.2 to 3.5] and the subgroup free of atherosclerosis at the 1995 baseline: 3.8 [1.6 to 8.9]). The risk of early atherogenesis was additionally amplified when high-sHSP60 and chronic infection were present together. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides the first prospective data confirming an association between high levels of sHSP60 and early carotid atherosclerosis. This possibly indicates an involvement of sHSP60 in activating proinflammatory processes associated with early vessel pathology
Exotic phase diagram of a topological quantum system
We study the quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in the Kitaev spin model on a
triangle-honeycomb lattice. In addition to the ordinary topological QPTs
between Abelian and non-Abelian phases, we find new QPTs which can occur
between two phases belonging to the same topological class, namely, either two
non-Abelian phases with the same Chern number or two Abelian phases with the
same Chern number. Such QPTs result from the singular behaviors of the nonlocal
