    Corrigendum to New Generalized Cyclotomic Binary Sequences of Period p2p^2

    Full text link
    New generalized cyclotomic binary sequences of period p2p^2 are proposed in this paper, where pp is an odd prime. The sequences are almost balanced and their linear complexity is determined. The result shows that the proposed sequences have very large linear complexity if pp is a non-Wieferich prime.Comment: In the appended corrigendum, we pointed out that the proof of Lemma 6 in the paper only holds for f=2f=2 and gave a proof for any f=2rf=2^r when pp is a non-Wieferich prim

    Transgenic Mice Convert Carbohydrates to Essential Fatty Acids

    Transgenic mice (named “Omega mice”) were engineered to carry both optimized fat-1 and fat-2 genes from the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans and are capable of producing essential omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids from saturated fats or carbohydrates. When maintained on a high-saturated fat diet lacking essential fatty acids or a high-carbohydrate, no-fat diet, the Omega mice exhibit high tissue levels of both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, with a ratio of ∼1∶1. This study thus presents an innovative technology for the production of both omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids, as well as a new animal model for understanding the true impact of fat on human health

    Visual duration aftereffect is position invariant

    Adaptation to relatively long or short sensory events leads to a negative aftereffect, such that the durations of the subsequent events within a certain range appear to be contracted or expanded. The distortion in perceived duration is presumed to arise from the adaptation of duration detectors. Here, we focus on the positional sensitivity of those visual duration detectors by exploring whether the duration aftereffect may be constrained by the visual location of stimuli. We adopted two different paradigms, one that tests for transfer across visual hemifields, and the other that tests for simultaneous selectivity between visual hemifields. By employing these experimental designs, we show that the duration aftereffect strongly transfers across visual hemifields and is not contingent on them. The lack of position specificity suggests that duration detectors in the visual system may operate at a relatively later stage of sensory processing

    WAR Metaphor’s Persistent Prevalence in Chinese Pandemic Coverage

    Get PDF
    The WAR metaphor pervades public discourse, offering a swift comprehension and eliciting urgency and rapid response. Universally, it emerges as the primary conceptualization for COVID-19 across nations. Nevertheless, certain Western media explore alternative metaphors, wary of potential adverse effects, while Chinese news media steadfastly embrace the WAR metaphor in pandemic coverage. Drawing on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT), this article qualitatively analyzes the phenomenon. Conclusively, the study reveals deep-seated historical, cultural, and social contextual motivations, evident in China's distinct war history, collectivist values, and the pandemic situation. This exploration sheds light on the unique discourse of Chinese media on pandemic response, aiding global understanding and contributing to metaphor in cultural and news discourse research

    Several new infinite classes of 0-APN power functions over F2n\mathbb{F}_{2^n}

    Full text link
    The investigation of partially APN functions has attracted a lot of research interest recently. In this paper, we present several new infinite classes of 0-APN power functions over F2n\mathbb{F}_{2^n} by using the multivariate method and resultant elimination, and show that these 0-APN power functions are CCZ-inequivalent to the known ones.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2210.02207, arXiv:2210.15103 by other author
