    How government green investment affects the carbon emission reduction process: empirical evidence from prefecture-level cities in China

    Government green investment (GGI) is one of the effective tools for reducing carbon emissions (CEs). This is of great significance for the realization of “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.” This study innovatively considers the multidimensional CE reduction (CER) process indexes to explore the impact mechanism of GGI on China’s CER process. At the same time, CER is particularly critical in resource-dependent regions. This study incorporates this perspective to explore the CER effect of GGI in these regions. This paper developed a multidimensional evaluation system for China’s CER process, using panel data of 269 prefecture-level cities from 2008 to 2019 to explore the impact of GGI on China’s CER process. The results indicated that 1) GGI promotes CER in China as a whole and effectively inhibits CEs, per capita CEs, and CE intensity; 2) GGI promotes CER to some extent by enhancing the energy efficiency and total factor productivity; 3) it plays a larger role in CER in regions with a high energy endowment; and 4) the impact of GGI on CER is heterogeneous in geographical regions, city sizes, and economic development levels. This study makes policy recommendations for reducing CEs, including intensifying GGI and playing its investment-pulling role, thereby increasing the investment related to improving energy efficiency and total factor productivity and promoting government intervention in areas with high energy endowments

    Reducing Carbon Footprint Inequality of Household Consumption in Rural Areas:Analysis from Five Representative Provinces in China

    Household consumption carbon footprint and inequality reductions are vital for a sustainable society, especially for rural areas. This study, focusing on rural China, one of the fastest growing economies with a massive population, explored the carbon footprint and inequality of household consumption using the latest micro household survey data of 2018 linked to environmental extended input–-output analysis. The results show that in 2018 in rural China, the average household carbon footprint is 2.46 tons CO2-eq per capita, which is around one-third of China’s average footprint, indicating the large potential for further growth. Housing (45.32%), transportation (20.45%), and food (19.62%) are the dominant contributors to the carbon footprint. Meanwhile, great inequality, with a Gini coefficient of 0.488, among rural households is observed, which is largely due to differences in type of house built or purchased (explaining 24.44% of the variation), heating (18.10%), car purchase (12.44%), and petrol consumption (12.44%). Provinces, average education, and nonfarm income are among the important factors influencing the inequality. In the process of urbanization and rural revitalization, there is a high possibility that the household carbon footprint continues to increase, maintaining high levels of inequality. The current energy transition toward less carbon-intensive fuels in rural China is likely to dampen the growth rates of carbon footprints and potentially decrease inequality. Carbon intensity decrease could significantly reduce carbon footprints, but increase inequality. More comprehensive measures to reduce carbon footprint and inequality are needed, including transitioning to clean energy, poverty alleviation, reduction of income inequality, and better health care coverage

    Pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, and antitumor activity of a novel compound, NY-2, in non-small cell lung cancer

    Introduction: ZLDI-8, which has a relatively strong antitumor activity, is an inhibitor of ADAM-17 and acts on the Notch signaling pathway. To further optimize its structure and improve its activity, a series of derivatives of ZLDI-8 was synthesized. NY-2 was the most effective derivative based on preliminary activity screening in vitro, with no obvious toxicity after administration in vivo.Method: The study aimed to determine the pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and antitumor activity of compound NY-2 on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in vitro and in vivo.Results: The in vivo pharmacokinetics parameters of NY-2 were better than those of ZLDI-8. The tissue distribution analysis showed that tail vein injection of 6 mg/kg of NY-2 in rats resulted in the highest concentration in the lung, so we hypothesized that NY-2 might be effective in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. In vitro assays showed that NY-2 significantly inhibited tumor colony formation, invasion, and migration and increased LDH activity and apoptosis in a concentration-dependent manner in non-small cell lung cancer cells. NY-2 also inhibited the formation of lung metastases without significant toxicity to major organs in nude mice.Conclusion: Compared with the parent compound, ZLDI-8, the activity and safety of NY-2 were higher. NY-2 acts on ADAM17 and simultaneously affects the downstream Notch1 and integrinβ1 signaling pathways resulting in antitumor activity. Thus, NY-2 could be a potential antitumor agent, inhibiting the organization and development of non-small cell lung cancer

    Attack is Good Augmentation: Towards Skeleton-Contrastive Representation Learning

    Contrastive learning, relying on effective positive and negative sample pairs, is beneficial to learn informative skeleton representations in unsupervised skeleton-based action recognition. To achieve these positive and negative pairs, existing weak/strong data augmentation methods have to randomly change the appearance of skeletons for indirectly pursuing semantic perturbations. However, such approaches have two limitations: 1) solely perturbing appearance cannot well capture the intrinsic semantic information of skeletons, and 2) randomly perturbation may change the original positive/negative pairs to soft positive/negative ones. To address the above dilemma, we start the first attempt to explore an attack-based augmentation scheme that additionally brings in direct semantic perturbation, for constructing hard positive pairs and further assisting in constructing hard negative pairs. In particular, we propose a novel Attack-Augmentation Mixing-Contrastive learning (A2^2MC) to contrast hard positive features and hard negative features for learning more robust skeleton representations. In A2^2MC, Attack-Augmentation (Att-Aug) is designed to collaboratively perform targeted and untargeted perturbations of skeletons via attack and augmentation respectively, for generating high-quality hard positive features. Meanwhile, Positive-Negative Mixer (PNM) is presented to mix hard positive features and negative features for generating hard negative features, which are adopted for updating the mixed memory banks. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that A2^2MC is competitive with the state-of-the-art methods

    Huatuo-26M, a Large-scale Chinese Medical QA Dataset

    In this paper, we release a largest ever medical Question Answering (QA) dataset with 26 million QA pairs. We benchmark many existing approaches in our dataset in terms of both retrieval and generation. Experimental results show that the existing models perform far lower than expected and the released dataset is still challenging in the pre-trained language model era. Moreover, we also experimentally show the benefit of the proposed dataset in many aspects: (i) trained models for other QA datasets in a zero-shot fashion; and (ii) as external knowledge for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG); and (iii) improving existing pre-trained language models by using the QA pairs as a pre-training corpus in continued training manner.     Perceptions of the motivational climate, basic psychological needs, and life skills development in Chinese physical education students

    IntroductionLife skills can have a positive impact on young people’s mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. Physical education (PE) is viewed as a promising setting for developing students’ life skills, but less is known about this in non-English speaking countries such as China. Based on the integration of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Achievement Goal Theory (AGT), we aimed to examine the relationships between students’ perceptions of the teacher-initiated motivational climate (mastery- or performance-oriented) and their life skills development in PE, as well as the mediating role of their basic psychological needs (BPNs) (satisfaction or frustration).MethodsWe employed a cross-sectional survey. Chinese students (N = 533, Age range = 13–18 years) completed measures assessing these variables. We fulfilled correlational and mediational analyses.ResultsThese findings showed that mastery climate was positively associated with needs satisfaction (r = 0.66) and eight life skills (r range = 0.44–0.61), whereas negatively associated with needs frustration (r = −0.49). Performance climate was positively related to needs frustration (r = 0.52), but negatively related to needs satisfaction (r = −0.38) and eight life skills (r range = −0.28 – −0.15). Needs satisfaction was positively (r range = 0.44–0.65), while needs frustration was negatively (r range = −0.50 – −0.34) linked with eight life skills. Furthermore, needs satisfaction positively mediated the effect of mastery climate on life skills development, but it is not found that needs frustration mediated the effect of performance climate on life skills besides goal setting, social skills, and time management.ConclusionIn conclusion, our study extended the previous literature on life skills in PE, and highlighted the roles of motivational climate and BPNs on students’ life skills development. In practice, PE teachers should be encouraged to create a mastery climate as well as avoid a performance climate, to foster students’ BPNs satisfaction, which in turn, promote their life skills development

    Terlipressin May Decrease In-Hospital Mortality of Cirrhotic Patients with Acute Gastrointestinal Bleeding and Renal Dysfunction: A Retrospective Multicenter Observational Study

    Acute gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB) rapidly reduces effective blood volume, thereby precipitating acute kidney injury (AKI). Terlipressin, which can induce splanchnic vasoconstriction and increase renal perfusion, has been recommended for acute GIB and hepatorenal syndrome in liver cirrhosis. Thus, we hypothesized that terlipressin might be beneficial for cirrhotic patients with acute GIB and renal impairment. In this Chinese multi-center study, 1644 cirrhotic patients with acute GIB were retrospectively enrolled. AKI was defined according to the International Club of Ascites (ICA) criteria. Renal dysfunction was defined as serum creatinine (sCr) > 133 μmol/L at admission and/or any time point during hospitalization. Incidence of renal impairment and in-hospital mortality were the primary end-points. The incidence of any stage ICA-AKI, ICA-AKI stages 1B, 2, and 3, and renal dysfunction in cirrhotic patients with acute GIB was 7.1%, 1.8%, and 5.0%, respectively. The in-hospital mortality was significantly increased by renal dysfunction (14.5% vs. 2.2%, P < 0.001) and ICA-AKI stages 1B, 2, and 3 (11.1% vs. 2.8%, P = 0.011), but not any stage ICA-AKI (5.7% vs. 2.7%, P = 0.083). The in-hospital mortality was significantly decreased by terlipressin in patients with renal dysfunction (3.6% vs. 20.0%, P = 0.044), but not in those with any stage ICA-AKI (4.5% vs. 6.0%, P = 0.799) or ICA-AKI stages 1B, 2, and 3 (0.0% vs. 14.3%, P = 0.326). Renal dysfunction increased the in-hospital mortality of cirrhotic patients with acute GIB. Terlipressin might decrease the in-hospital mortality of cirrhotic patients with acute GIB and renal dysfunction. NCT03846180 ( https://clinicaltrials.gov )

    Comprehensive Analysis of Leukocytes, Vascularization and Matrix Metalloproteinases in Human Menstrual Xenograft Model

    In our previous study, menstrual-like changes in mouse were provoked through the pharmacologic withdrawal of progesterone with mifepristone following induction of decidualization. However, mouse is not a natural menstruation animal, and the menstruation model using external stimuli may not truly reflect the occurrence and development of the human menstrual process. Therefore, we established a model of menstruation based on human endometrial xenotransplantation. In this model, human endometrial tissues were transplanted subcutaneously into SCID mice that were ovarectomized and supplemented with estrogen and progestogen by silastic implants with a scheme imitating the endocrinological milieu of human menstrual cycle. Morphology, hormone levels, and expression of vimentin and cytokeratin markers were evaluated to confirm the menstrual-like changes in this model. With 28 days of hormone treatment, transplanted human endometrium survived and underwent proliferation, differentiation and disintegration, similar to human endometrium in vivo. Human CD45+ cells showed a peak of increase 28 days post-transplantation. Three days after progesterone withdrawal, mouse CD45+ cells increased rapidly in number and were significantly greater than human CD45+ cell counts. Mouse CD31+ blood vascular-like structures were detected in both transplanted and host tissues. After progesterone withdrawal, the expression levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) 1, 2, and 9 were increased. In summary, we successfully established a human endometrial xenotransplantation model in SCID mice, based on the results of menstrual-like changes in which MMP-1, 2 and 9 are involved. We showed that leukocytes are originated from in situ proliferation in human xenografts and involved in the occurrence of menstruation. This model will help to further understand the occurrence, growth, and differentiation of the endometrium and the underlying mechanisms of menstruation
