Quasienergy spectra of a charged particle in planar honeycomb lattices
The low energy spectrum of a particle in planar honeycomb lattices is
conical, which leads to the unusual electronic properties of graphene. In this
letter we calculate the quasienergy spectra of a charged particle in honeycomb
lattices driven by a strong AC field, which is of fundamental importance for
its time-dependent dynamics. We find that depending on the amplitude, direction
and frequency of external field, many interesting phenomena may occur,
including band collapse, renormalization of velocity of ``light'', gap opening
etc.. Under suitable conditions, with increasing the magnitude of the AC field,
a series of phase transitions from gapless phases to gapped phases appear
alternatively. At the same time, the Dirac points may disappear or change to a
line. We suggest possible realization of the system in Honeycomb optical

Coulomb-enhanced dynamic localization and Bell state generation in coupled quantum dots
We investigate the dynamics of two interacting electrons in coupled quantum
dots driven by an AC field. We find that the two electrons can be trapped in
one of the dots by the AC field, in spite of the strong Coulomb repulsion. In
particular, we find that the interaction may enhance the localization effect.
We also demonstrate the field excitation procedure to generate the maximally
entangled Bell states. The generation time is determined by both analytic and
numerical solutions of the time dependent Schrodinger equation.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Dynamics of spin-2 Bose condensate driven by external magnetic fields
Dynamic response of the F=2 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) under the
influence of external magnetic fields is studied. A general formula is given
for the oscillation period to describe population transfer from the initial
polar state to other spin states. We show that when the frequency and the
reduced amplitude of the longitudinal magnetic field are related in a specific
manner, the population of the initial spin-0 state will be dynamically
localized during time evolution. The effects of external noise and nonlinear
spin exchange interaction on the dynamics of the spinor BEC are studied. We
show that while the external noise may eventually destroy the Rabi oscillations
and dynamic spin localization, these coherent phenomena are robust against the

Quantum Entanglement of Excitons in Coupled Quantum Dots
Optically-controlled exciton dynamics in coupled quantum dots is studied. We
show that the maximally entangled Bell states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger
(GHZ) states can be robustly generated by manipulating the system parameters to
be at the avoided crossings in the eigenenergy spectrum. The analysis of
population transfer is systematically carried out using a dressed-state
picture. In addition to the quantum dot configuration that have been discussed
by Quiroga and Johnson [Phys. Rev. Lett. \QTR{bf}{83}, 2270 (1999)], we show
that the GHZ states also may be produced in a ray of three quantum dots with a

Superconductivity in SmFe1-xMxAsO (M = Co, Rh, Ir)
In this paper we report the comparative study of superconductivity by 3d
(Co), 4d (Rh), 5d (Ir) element doping in SmFeAsO. X-ray diffraction patterns
indicate that the material has formed the ZrCuSiAs-type structure with a space
group P4/nmm. It is found that the antiferromagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW)
order in the parent compounds is rapidly suppressed by Co, Rh, and Ir doping,
and superconductivity emerges. Both electrical resistance and magnetization
measurements show superconductivity up to around 10 K in SmFe1-xMxAsO (M = Co,
Rh, Ir). Co, Rh and Ir locate in the same column in the periodic table of
elements but have different electronic band structure, so comparative study
would add more ingredients to the underlying physics of the iron-based

Genomewide association study of leprosy.
BACKGROUND: The narrow host range of Mycobacterium leprae and the fact that it is refractory to growth in culture has limited research on and the biologic understanding of leprosy. Host genetic factors are thought to influence susceptibility to infection as well as disease progression. METHODS: We performed a two-stage genomewide association study by genotyping 706 patients and 1225 controls using the Human610-Quad BeadChip (Illumina). We then tested three independent replication sets for an association between the presence of leprosy and 93 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were most strongly associated with the disease in the genomewide association study. Together, these replication sets comprised 3254 patients and 5955 controls. We also carried out tests of heterogeneity of the associations (or lack thereof) between these 93 SNPs and disease, stratified according to clinical subtype (multibacillary vs. paucibacillary). RESULTS: We observed a significant association (P<1.00x10(-10)) between SNPs in the genes CCDC122, C13orf31, NOD2, TNFSF15, HLA-DR, and RIPK2 and a trend toward an association (P=5.10x10(-5)) with a SNP in LRRK2. The associations between the SNPs in C13orf31, LRRK2, NOD2, and RIPK2 and multibacillary leprosy were stronger than the associations between these SNPs and paucibacillary leprosy. CONCLUSIONS: Variants of genes in the NOD2-mediated signaling pathway (which regulates the innate immune response) are associated with susceptibility to infection with M. leprae
Scientific Publications in Nephrology and Urology Journals from Chinese Authors in East Asia: A 10-Year Survey of the Literature
BACKGROUND: Diseases of the kidneys and genitourinary tract are common health problems that affect people of all ages and demographic backgrounds. In this study, we compared the quantity and quality of nephrological and urological articles published in international journals from the three major regions of China: the mainland (ML), Hong Kong (HK), and Taiwan (TW). METHODS: Nephrological and urological articles originating from ML, TW, and HK that were published in 61 journals from 1999-2008 were retrieved from the PubMed database. We recorded the numbers of total articles, clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, case reports, impact factors (IF), citations, and articles published in the leading general-medicine journals. We used these data to compare the quantity and quality of publication output from the three regions. RESULTS: The total number of articles increased significantly from 1999 to 2008 in the three regions. The number of articles from ML has exceeded that from HK since 2004, and surpassed that from TW in 2008. Publications from TW had the highest accumulated IF, total citations of articles, and the most articles published in leading general-medicine journals. However, HK publications had the highest average IF. Although ML produced the largest quantity of articles, it exhibited the lowest quality among the three regions. CONCLUSION: The number of nephrological and urological publications originating from the three major regions of China increased significantly from 1999 to 2008.
