    Linear programming on the Stiefel manifold

    Linear programming on the Stiefel manifold (LPS) is studied for the first time. It aims at minimizing a linear objective function over the set of all pp-tuples of orthonormal vectors in Rn{\mathbb R}^n satisfying kk additional linear constraints. Despite the classical polynomial-time solvable case k=0k=0, general (LPS) is NP-hard. According to the Shapiro-Barvinok-Pataki theorem, (LPS) admits an exact semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation when p(p+1)/2nkp(p+1)/2\le n-k, which is tight when p=1p=1. Surprisingly, we can greatly strengthen this sufficient exactness condition to pnkp\le n-k, which covers the classical case pnp\le n and k=0k=0. Regarding (LPS) as a smooth nonlinear programming problem, we reveal a nice property that under the linear independence constraint qualification, the standard first- and second-order {\it local} necessary optimality conditions are sufficient for {\it global} optimality when p+1nkp+1\le n-k

    On globally solving nonconvex trust region subproblem via projected gradient method

    The trust region subproblem (TRS) is to minimize a possibly nonconvex quadratic function over a Euclidean ball. There are typically two cases for (TRS), the so-called ``easy case'' and ``hard case''. Even in the ``easy case'', the sequence generated by the classical projected gradient method (PG) may converge to a saddle point at a sublinear local rate, when the initial point is arbitrarily selected from a nonzero measure feasible set. To our surprise, when applying (PG) to solve a cheap and possibly nonconvex reformulation of (TRS), the generated sequence initialized with {\it any} feasible point almost always converges to its global minimizer. The local convergence rate is at least linear for the ``easy case'', without assuming that we have possessed the information that the ``easy case'' holds.     Detection and Genetic Analysis of Porcine Bocavirus

    Porcine Bocavirus (PBoV) has been reported to be associated with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome and pneumonia in pigs. In this study, a survey was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of PBoV in slaughter pigs, sick pigs, asymptomatic pigs and classical swine fever virus (CSFV) eradication plan herds in five provinces of China (Henan, Liaoning, Shandong, Hebei and Tianjin) by means of PCR targeting NS1 gene of PBoV. Among the total of 403 tissue samples, 11.41% were positive for PBoV. The positive rates of spleen (20.75%) and inguinal lymph node (27.18%) are higher than those of other organs. PCR products of twenty PBoV positive samples from slaughter pigs were sequenced for phylogenetic analysis. The result revealed that PBoV could be divided into 6 groups (PBoV-a~PBoV-f). All PBoV sequenced in this study belong to PBoV-a–PBoV-d with 90.1% to 99% nucleotide identities. Our results exhibited significant genetic diversity of PBoV and suggested a complex prevalence of PBoV in Chinese swine herds. Whether this diversity of PBoV has a significance to pig production or even public health remains to be further studied

    Social Support and Resilience as Mediators Between Stress and Life Satisfaction Among People With Substance Use Disorder in China

    This study investigated the potential mediating roles of resilience and social support in the relationship between stress and life satisfaction. A total of 426 individuals, who have substance use disorder, from the Shifosi and Dalianshan rehabilitation facilities in China participated in the study. They were tested using the Perceived Stress Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Results showed that the serial multiple mediation of social support and resilience in the relationship between stress and life satisfaction was significant. Furthermore, the findings corroborate the important roles of perceived social support and resilience in alleviating stress. Finally, we discussed ways to enhance the life satisfaction for individuals who have substance use disorder and analyzed the limitations of this study

    Reliability and validity of the Mental Health Self-management Questionnaire among Chinese patients with mood and anxiety disorders

    BackgroundSelf-management plays an important role in promoting and restoring mental health for individuals with mental health issues. However, there is no valid and reliable Chinese tool assessing the self-management behaviors of people with mood and anxiety disorders. This study aimed to develop a Chinese version of the Mental Health Self-management Questionnaire (MHSQ-C) and to verify its psychometric properties.MethodsA total of 440 potential participants were recruited by convenience sampling from June to August 2020. Item analysis and analyses of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, content validity, construct validity and criterion validity were performed.ResultsData from 326 participants were used. Three factors obtained via principal component analysis and varimax rotation explained 53.68% of the total variance. The average content validity index was 0.99. The Cronbach’s α coefficient (total: 0.874, clinical: 0.706, empowerment: 0.818, vitality: 0.830) and test-retest reliability (ICC: total: 0.783, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.616, 0.882], clinical: 0.525, 95% CI [0.240, 0.725], empowerment: 0.786, 95% CI [0.622, 0.884], vitality: 0.748, 95% CI [0.564, 0.862]) were good. The MHSQ-C was well correlated with the Partners in Health scale and showed no floor or ceiling effect.DiscussionThe MHSQ-C is a reliable and valid tool to evaluate the self-management strategies of patients with mood and anxiety disorders

    Causal effect of PM1 on morbidity of cause-specific respiratory diseases based on a negative control exposure

    Background: Extensive studies have linked PM2.5 and PM10 with respiratory diseases (RD). However, few is known about causal association between PM1 and morbidity of RD. We aimed to assess the causal effects of PM1 on cause-specific RD. Methods: Hospital admission data were obtained for RD during 2014 and 2019 in Beijing, China. Negative control exposure and extreme gradient boosting with SHapley Additive exPlanation was used to explore the causality and contribution between PM1 and RD. Stratified analysis by gender, age, and season was conducted. Results: A total of 1,183,591 admissions for RD were recorded. Per interquartile range (28 μg/m3) uptick in concentration of PM1 corresponded to a 3.08% [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.66%–4.52%] increment in morbidity of total RD. And that was 4.47% (95% CI: 2.46%–6.52%) and 0.15% (95% CI: 1.44%-1.78%), for COPD and asthma, respectively. Significantly positive causal associations were observed for PM1 with total RD and COPD. Females and the elderly had higher effects on total RD, COPD, and asthma only in the warm months (Z = 3.03, P = 0.002; Z = 4.01, P \u3c 0.001; Z = 3.92, P \u3c 0.001; Z = 2.11, P = 0.035; Z = 2.44, P = 0.015). Contribution of PM1 ranked first, second and second for total RD, COPD, and asthma among air pollutants. Conclusion: PM1 was causally associated with increased morbidity of total RD and COPD, but not causally associated with asthma. Females and the elderly were more vulnerable to PM1-associated effects on RD

    Association between ambient air pollution and hospital admissions, length of hospital stay and hospital cost for patients with cardiovascular diseases and comorbid diabetes mellitus: Base on 1,969,755 cases in Beijing, China, 2014–2019

    Background: Evidence on the effects of the air pollutants on the hospital admissions, hospital cost and length of stay (LOS) among patients with comorbidities remains limited in China, particularly for patients with cardiovascular diseases and comorbid diabetes mellitus (CVD-DM). Methods: We collected daily data on CVD-DM patients from 242 hospitals in Beijing between 2014 and 2019. Generalized additive model was employed to quantify the associations between admissions, LOS, and hospital cost for CVD-DM patients and air pollutants. We further evaluated the attributable risk posed by air pollutants to CVD-DM patients, using both Chinese and WHO air quality guidelines as reference. Results: Per 10 ug/m3 increase of particles with an aerodynamic diameter \u3c 2.5 μm (PM2.5), particles with an aerodynamic diameter \u3c 10 μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbonic oxide (CO) and ozone (O3) corresponded to a 0.64% (95% CI: 0.57 to 0.71), 0.52% (95% CI: 0.46 to 0.57), 0.93% (95% CI: 0.67 to 1.20), 0.98% (95% CI: 0.81 to 1.16), 1.66% (95% CI: 1.18 to 2.14) and 0.53% (95% CI: 0.45 to 0.61) increment for CVD-DM patients’ admissions. Among the six pollutants, particulate pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10) in most lag days exhibited adverse effects on LOS and hospital cost. For every 10 ug/m3 increase in PM2.5 and PM10, the absolute increase with LOS will increase 62.08 days (95% CI: 28.93 to 95.23) and 51.77 days (95% CI:22.88 to 80.66), respectively. The absolute increase with hospital cost will increase 105.04 Chinese Yuan (CNY) (95% CI: 49.27 to 160.81) and 81.76 CNY (95% CI: 42.01 to 121.51) in PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. Given WHO 2021 air quality guideline as the reference, PM2.5 had the maximum attributable fraction of 3.34% (95% CI: 2.94% to 3.75%), corresponding to an avoidable of 65,845 (95% CI: 57,953 to 73,812) patients with CVD-DM. Conclusion: PM2.5 and PM10 are positively associated with hospital admissions, hospital cost and LOS for patients with CVD-DM. Policy changes to reduce air pollutants exposure may reduce CVD-DM admissions and substantial savings in health care spending and LOS

    Extracellular vesicles in metabolic dysfunction associated fatty liver disease: mechanisms, diagnostic and therapeutic implications

    The prevalence of metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is increasing rapidly worldwide due to the obesity epidemic. Advanced stages of the MAFLD, such as non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis are affecting global health. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are released by all cell types and are important in cell-to-cell communication and maintaining homeostasis, but they also play a role in the pathogenesis of various diseases. EVs contain biological information such as lipids, proteins, messenger RNAs (mRNAs), small RNAs, and DNA, and they act on (distant) target cells. The cargo of EVs is dependent on the type and the state of the releasing cell. EVs have been proposed as biomarkers, prognostic, and even therapeutic agents, also in the context of liver diseases. This review aims to give an overview of the current knowledge on EVs in MAFLD, including the role and interaction of EVs with different cell types in the liver. Several aspects of EVs, including their origin, characteristics, cargo, and functions are reviewed. Moreover, the potential of EVs as targets for the treatment of MAFLD is discussed
