Tidal gravitational effects in a satellite
Atomic wave interferometers are tied to a telescope pointing towards a
faraway star in a nearly free falling satellite. Such a device is sensitive to
the acceleration and the rotation relatively to the local inertial frame and to
the tidal gravitational effects too. We calculate the rotation of the telescope
due to the aberration and the deflection of the light in the gravitational
field of a central mass (the Earth and Jupiter). Within the framework of a
general parametrized description of the problem, we discuss the contributions
which must be taken into account in order to observe the Lense-Thirring effect.
Using a geometrical model, we consider some perturbations to the idealized
device and we calculate the corresponding effect on the periodic components of
the signal. Some improvements in the knowledge of the gravitational field are
still necessary as well as an increase of the experimental capabilities;
however our conclusions support a reasonable optimism for the future. Finally
we put forward the necessity of a more complete, realistic and powerful model
in order to obtain a definitive conclusion on the feasibility of the experiment
as far as the observation of the Lense-Thirring effect is involved.Comment: accepted to General Relativity and Gravitatio
The HyperBagGraph DataEdron: An Enriched Browsing Experience of Multimedia Datasets
Traditional verbatim browsers give back information in a linear way according
to a ranking performed by a search engine that may not be optimal for the
surfer. The latter may need to assess the pertinence of the information
retrieved, particularly when she wants to explore other facets of a
multi-facetted information space. For instance, in a multimedia dataset
different facets such as keywords, authors, publication category, organisations
and figures can be of interest. The facet simultaneous visualisation can help
to gain insights on the information retrieved and call for further searches.
Facets are co-occurence networks, modeled by HyperBag-Graphs -- families of
multisets -- and are in fact linked not only to the publication itself, but to
any chosen reference. These references allow to navigate inside the dataset and
perform visual queries. We explore here the case of scientific publications

Optical orientation of electron spins and valence band spectroscopy in germanium
We have investigated optical orientation in the vicinity of the direct gap of
bulk germanium. The electron spin polarization is studied via
polarization-resolved photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy unfolding the
interplay between doping and ultrafast electron transfer from the center of the
Brillouin zone towards its edge. As a result, the direct-gap photoluminescence
circular polarisation can vary from 30% to -60% when the excitation laser
energy increases. This study provides also simultaneous access to the resonant
electronic Raman scattering due to inter-valence band excitations of
spin-polarized holes, yielding a fast and versatile spectroscopic approach for
the determination of the energy spectrum of holes in semiconducting materials
