Temporal Aggregation Effects on the Construction of Portfolios of Stocks or Mutual Funds through Optimization Techniques - Some Empirical and Monte Carlo Results

In this paper we test the effects of temporal aggregation (disaggregation) on the efficiency of portfolio construction using the mean variance optimization approach. Using Monte Carlo techniques and empirical data from the Athens Stocks Exchange we confirm that the use of temporally aggregated data effects very seriously the efficiency of the constructed portfolio. Especially as the degree of temporal aggregation increases the application of optimization techniques could lead to different results regarding the percentage of stocks participation, the weights and finally the total portfolio performance.Portfolio Optimization, Stocks; Temporal Aggregation; Stochastic Simulation, The Banking Sector of the Athens Stocks Exchange

Temporal Aggregation and the Akaike and Schwarz Model Selection Criteria. Some Monte Carlo Results

This short paper demonstrates that the use of temporally aggregated data may affect the performance of the well known Akaike and Schwarz model selection criteria. These two criteria are widely used for model selection in linear and nonlinear models. Using Monte Carlo techniques, we find that temporal aggregation could affect seriously the performance of the two aforementioned criteria.

Le souci de l’effacement : Insignifiance et poétique narrative chez Jean-Philippe Toussaint

Le présent article se propose d’explorer la poétique narrative de Jean-Philippe Toussaint à l’aune de l’insignifiant. Il s’agit, dans un premier temps, de voir en quoi l’insignifiant s’inscrit à même la diégèse, dans un usage de l’espace et dans des activités spécifiques. Dans un deuxième temps, on tâche de montrer le travail d’indifférenciation, et partant d’insignifiance, que Toussaint fait subir à la forme narrative, autant par rapport aux rôles fondamentaux de patient (ce que ses narrateurs personnages tendent à être) et d’agent (ce qu’ils ne parviennent à peu près pas à être) que dans la structuration de l’intrigue. Dans un troisième temps, on met en relation cette poétique de l’insignifiant avec un projet narratorial qui traverse l’oeuvre de Toussaint et consiste à proposer un équivalent romanesque à cet « autoportrait […] mais sans moi et sans personne » qui semble hanter ses romans. La poétique narrative de l’insignifiant devient alors le moyen de cet effacement de soi.Examined here is Jean-Philippe Toussaint’s poetic narrative rife with insignificance. First we seek to discern how the insignificant is detailed within the diegesis, within space and specific activities. We then broach the work of indifferentiation, from the insignificance to which Toussaint subjects the narrative form, as per the fundamental roles of the patients (his typical characters) and the agent (what they mostly avoid being) in structuring the intrigue. Thirdly, we relate this poetic of the insignificant to a narrative palate that colours Toussaint’s oeuvre, like the Romanesqueness of this “self-portrait” (…) without me or anyone else” that haunts his novels.
