Jahn-Teller Distortion and Ferromagnetism in the Dilute Magnetic Semiconductors GaN:Mn
Using first-principles total-energy methods, we investigate Jahn-Teller
distortions in III-V dilute magnetic semiconductors, GaAs:Mn and GaN:Mn in the
cubic zinc blende structure. The results for an isolated Mn impurity on a Ga
site show that there is no appreciable effect in GaAs, whereas, in GaN there is
a Jahn-Teller effect in which the symmetry around the impurity changes from
T to D or to C. The large effect in GaN occurs because of
the localized d character, which is further enhanced by the distortion. The
lower symmetry should be detectable experimentally in cubic GaN with low Mn
concentration, and should be affected by charge compensation (reductions of
holes and conversion of Mn ions to d with no Jahn-Teller effect).
Jahn-Teller effect is greatly reduced because the symmetry at each Mn site is
lowered due to the Mn-Mn interaction. The tendency toward ferromagnetism is
found to be stronger in GaN:Mn than in GaAs:Mn and to be only slightly reduced

Van der Waals epitaxy of Bi2Se3 on Si(111) vicinal surface: An approach to prepare high-quality thin films of topological insulator
Epitaxial growth of topological insulator Bi2Se3 thin films on nominally flat
and vicinal Si(111) substrates is studied. In order to achieve planner growth
front and better quality epifilms, a two-step growth method is adopted for the
van der Waal epitaxy of Bi2Se3 to proceed. By employing vicinal Si(111)
substrate surfaces, the in-pane growth rate anisotropy of Bi2Se3 is explored to
achieve single crystalline Bi2Se3 epifilms, in which threading defects and
twins are effectively suppressed. Optimization of the growth parameters has
resulted in vicinal Bi2Se3 films showing a carrier mobility of ~ 2000 cm2V-1s-1
and the background doping of ~ 3 x 1018 cm-3 of the as-grown layers. Such
samples not only show relatively high magnetoresistance but also a linear
dependence on magnetic field.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure
Identification of nonlinear heat transfer laws from boundary observations
We consider the problem of identifying a nonlinear heat transfer law at the boundary, or of the temperature-dependent heat transfer coefficient in a parabolic equation from boundary observations. As a practical example, this model applies to the heat transfer coefficient that describes the intensity of heat exchange between a hot wire and the cooling water in which it is placed. We reformulate the inverse problem as a variational one which aims to minimize a misfit functional and prove that it has a solution. We provide a gradient formula for the misfit functional and then use some iterative methods for solving the variational problem. Thorough investigations are made with respect to several initial guesses and amounts of noise in the input data. Numerical results show that the methods are robust, stable and accurate
TECHNICAL NOTE ON THE INTRODUCTION OF PARTRIDGE COLOURED HUNGARIAN CHICKEN IN THE MEKONG DELTA OF VIETNAM
The paper aims to provide a brief agricultural profile of Tra Vinh province, informative adaptation results of Partridge coloured Hungarian chicken (PH) in Mekong Delta and describe the procedure to introduce PH into Tra Vinh province. During the introducing process, flexibility, consideration of the local condition (temperature, humidity, daily sunlight…), and availability of local resources such as bamboo blind, rice husk is essential for introducing a new chicken breed into Mekong Delta. For this, practical examples are given in the study. Regarding adaptation results, relatively high survival rate (89.6%) of PH was recorded at the end of 8th week. Although the recorded data of PH in Tra Vinh is limited, their performance is expected to be equally good or even better in comparison with that obtained in the sub-tropical climatic zone (North Vietnam). Further studies of PH adaptability in Mekong Delta for sustainable, traditional production and crossing purposes, as well as the involvement of chicken caravans to free range farming are recommended
Strong tuning of Rashba spin orbit interaction in single InAs nanowires
A key concept in the emerging field of spintronics is the gate voltage or
electric field control of spin precession via the effective magnetic field
generated by the Rashba spin orbit interaction. Here, we demonstrate the
generation and tuning of electric field induced Rashba spin orbit interaction
in InAs nanowires where a strong electric field is created either by a double
gate or a solid electrolyte surrounding gate. In particular, the electrolyte
gating enables six-fold tuning of Rashba coefficient and nearly three orders of
magnitude tuning of spin relaxation time within only 1 V of gate bias. Such a
dramatic tuning of spin orbit interaction in nanowires may have implications in
