    The Impact of Sensing Range on Spatial-Temporal Opportunity

    In this paper, we study the impact of secondary user (SU) sensing range on spectrum access opportunity in cognitive radio networks. We first derive a closed-form ex- pression of spectrum access opportunity by taking into ac- count the random variations in number, locations and trans- mitted powers of primary users (PUs). Then, we show how SU sensing range affects spectrum access opportunity, and the tradeoff between SU sensing range and spectrum ac- cess opportunity is formulated as an optimization problem to maximize spectrum access opportunity. Furthermore, we prove that there exists an optimal SU sensing range which yields the maximum spectrum access opportunity, and nu- merical results validate our theoretical analysis

    Predicting fatigue crack growth rate in a welded butt joint: The role of effective R ratio in accounting for residual stress effect

    A simple and efficient method is presented in this paper for predicting fatigue crack growth rate in welded butt joints. Three well-known empirical crack growth laws are employed using the material constants that were obtained from the base material coupon tests. Based on the superposition rule of the linear elastic fracture mechanics, welding residual stress effect is accounted for by replacing the nominal stress ratio (R) in the empirical laws by the effective stress intensity factor ratio (Reff). The key part of the analysis process is to calculate the stress intensity factor due to the initial residual stress field and also the stress relaxation and redistribution due to crack growth. The finite element method in conjunction with the modified virtual crack closure technique was used for this analysis. Fatigue crack growth rates were then calculated by the empirical laws and comparisons were made among these predictions as well as against published experimental tests, which were conducted under either constant amplitude load or constant stress intensity factor range. Test samples were M(T) geometry made of aluminium alloy 2024-T351 with a longitudinal weld by the variable polarity plasma arc welding process. Good agreement was achieved

    In a fourth generation model with heavy quarks, the production cross section of the Higgs boson in the gluon-gluon fusion process is significantly increased due to additional quark loops. In a similar way, the partial decay width of the decay channels Hgg,γγH\rightarrow gg, \gamma \gamma and γZ\gamma Z is modified.     A Comment on "Memory Effects in an Interacting Magnetic Nanoparticle System"

    Recently, Sun et al reported that striking memory effects had been clearly observed in their new experiments on an interacting nanoparticle system [1]. They claimed that the phenomena evidenced the existence of a spin-glass-like phase and supported the hierarchical model. No doubt that a particle system may display spin-glass-like behaviors [2]. However, in our opinion, the experiments in Ref. [1] cannot evidence the existence of spin-glass-like phase at all. We will demonstrate below that all the phenomena in Ref. [1] can be observed in a non-interacting particle system with a size distribution. Numerical simulations of our experiments also display the same features.Comment: A comment on "Phys. Rev.
