    Assessment of facial asymmetry before and after the surgical repair of cleft lip in unilateral cleft lip and palate cases

    This study was performed to assess facial asymmetry in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) before and after primary lip repair. Three-dimensional facial images of 30 UCLP cases (mean age 3.7 ± 0.8 months) captured 1–2 days before surgery and 4 months after surgery using stereophotogrammetry were analysed. A generic mesh – a mathematical facial mask consisting of thousands of points (vertices) – was conformed on the three-dimensional images. Average preoperative and postoperative conformed facial meshes were obtained and mirrored by reflecting on the lateral plane. Facial asymmetry was assessed by measuring the distances between the corresponding vertices of the superimposed facial meshes. Asymmetries were further examined in three directions: horizontal, vertical, and anteroposterior. Preoperatively, the philtrum and bridge of the nose were deviated towards the non-cleft side. The maximum vertical asymmetry was at the upper lip. The greatest anteroposterior asymmetry was at the alar base and in the paranasal area. The overall facial asymmetry improved markedly after surgery. Residual anteroposterior asymmetry was noted at the alar base, upper lip, and cheek on the cleft slide. In conclusion, dense correspondence analysis provided an insight into the anatomical reasons for the residual dysmorphology following the surgical repair of cleft lip for future surgical consideration

    Study of Aging and Production of Wine from Grape Fruit by Fermentation Process

    Fermentation biotechnology is an important industrial process for the production of alcoholic beverages including wine. However, aging of wine is always an important issue during production. In present study a attempt has made to produce wine by fermentation process along with the assesment of aging of wine. In this experiment Grape fruit (jufeng) was used as a raw material and fermentation process was carried out with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) at 28 degrees C. During experiment growth of yeast cell, total solid contents and degree of liquor alcohol was considered critically. The various alcoholic compounds were analyzed with selective method of gas chromatography. Results obtained in the present study indicates that volume of all compounds like ethyl acetate, propyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl acetate,isoamyl alcohol and ethyl formate was increased with the function of time during fermentation. While during aging process the contents of methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, isoamyl acetate and ethyl lactate were increased but isoamyl alcohol decreased. The levels of propyl alcohol and isobutyl alcohol fell after short period of time. However, no significant effects of aging process on methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, isobutyl alcohol, isoamyl alcohol and ethyl lactate (p\u3e0.05) were observed.     Tetraphenolate niobium and tantalum complexes for the ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone

    Reaction of the pro-ligand α,α,α′,α′-tetra(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl-p-)xylene-para-tetraphenol (p-L¹H₄) with two equivalents of [NbCl₅] in refluxing toluene afforded, after work-up, the complex {[NbCl₃(NCMe)]₂(μ-p-L¹)}·6MeCN (1·6MeCN). When the reaction was conducted in the presence of excess ethanol, the orange complex {[NbCl₂(OEt)(NCMe)]₂(μ-p-L¹)}·3½MeCN·0.614toluene (2·3½MeCN·0.614toluene) was formed. A similar reaction using [TaCl₅] afforded the yellow complex {[TaCl₂(OEt)(NCMe)]₂(μ-p-L¹)}·5MeCN (3·5MeCN). In the case of the meta pro-ligand, namely α,α,α′,α′tetra(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl-m-)xylene-meta-tetraphenol (m-L²H₄) only the use of [Nb(O)Cl₃(NCMe)₂] led to the isolation of crystalline material, namely the orange bis-chelate complex {[Nb(NCMe)Cl(m-L²H₂)₂]}·3½MeCN (4·3½MeCN) or {[Nb(NCMe)Cl(m-L²H₂)₂]}·5MeCN (4·5MeCN). The molecular structures of 1–4 and the tetraphenols L¹H₄ and m-L²H₄·2MeCN have been determined. Complexes 1–4 have been screened as pre-catalysts for the ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone, both with and without benzyl alcohol or solvent present, and at various temperatures; conversion rates were mostly excellent (>96%) with good control either at >100 °C over 20 h (in toluene) or 1 h (neat)

    Electronic transport in a Cantor stub waveguide network

    We investigate theoretically, the character of electronic eigenstates and transmission properties of a one dimensional array of stubs with Cantor geometry. Within the framework of real space re-normalization group (RSRG) and transfer matrix methods we analyze the resonant transmission and extended wave-functions in a Cantor array of stubs, which lack translational order. Apart from resonant states with high transmittance we unravel a whole family of wave-functions supported by such an array clamped between two-infinite ordered leads, which have an extended character in the RSRG scheme, but, for such states the transmission coefficient across the lead-sample-lead structure decays following a power-law as the system grows in size. This feature is explained from renormalization group ideas and may lead to the possibility of trapping of electronic, optical or acoustic waves in such hierarchical geometries

    Evaluation of Weight Change During Carboplatin Therapy in Dogs With Appendicular Osteosarcoma.

    BackgroundThe prevalence of cancer cachexia in veterinary medicine has not been studied widely, and as of yet, no definitive diagnostic criteria effectively assess this syndrome in veterinary patients.Objectives(1) To determine the patterns of weight change in dogs with appendicular osteosarcoma treated with amputation and single-agent carboplatin during the course of adjuvant chemotherapy; and (2) to determine whether postoperative weight change is a negative prognostic indicator for survival time in dogs with osteosarcoma.AnimalsEighty-eight dogs diagnosed with appendicular osteosarcoma. Animals were accrued from 3 veterinary teaching hospitals.MethodsRetrospective, multi-institutional study. Dogs diagnosed with appendicular osteosarcoma and treated with limb amputation followed by a minimum of 4 doses of single-agent carboplatin were included. Data analyzed in each patient included signalment, tumor site, preoperative serum alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), and body weight (kg) at each carboplatin treatment.ResultsA slight increase in weight occurred over the course of chemotherapy, but this change was not statistically significant. Weight change did not have a significant effect on survival. Institution, patient sex, and serum ALP activity did not have a significant effect on survival.Conclusions and clinical importanceWeight change was not a prognostic factor in these dogs, and weight loss alone may not be a suitable method of determining cancer cachexia in dogs with appendicular osteosarcoma
