The ways in which recent infrared observations, particularly by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS), have influenced ideas about star formation in normal galaxies, are discussed

    Ground-based 1- to 32-microns observations of ARP 220: Evidence for a dust-embedded AGN?

New observations of the 10 and 20 micron size of the emission region in Arp 220 are presented. Also given are ground based photometry from 1 to 32 micron including measurements of the strength of the silicate feature at 10 micron. The results show that the 20 micron size of Arp is smaller than 1.5 arcsec (500 pc); comparison of IRAS and ground based observations show that IRAS 12 micron flux measured with a large arcmin beam is the same as that seen from the ground with a 3 arcsec aperture. At 10 micron a deep silicate absorption feature is seen that corresponds to a visual extinction of about 50 mag. These results suggest that a very significant portion of the 10 to the 12th power L sub 0 infrared luminosity from Arp 220 comes from a region less than or of the order of 500 pc in diameter. When these results are combined with recent measurement of a broad Brackett alpha line by DePoy and an unresolved 2.2 micron source by Neugebauer, Matthews and Scoville, a very attractive possibility for the primary luminosity source Arp 220 is a dust embedded compact Seyfert type nucleus

Simple morbid anatomical studies of the human stomach: an analysis of 78 cases

This work deals with the morbid - anatomical examination of 72 autopsy and 4 gastrectomy stomachs, all formalin- fixed. The specimens were fixed according to Magnus' rulings within a very short time of death. The stomachs are divided into 5 histological grades according to their health or disease. It is shown that the severity of "chronic gastritis" tends to increase with age, although it is pointed out that there are exceptions to this statement.Proof of the existence of physiological ageing of the stomach was not found.A correlation was attempted between the incidence and severity of chronic gastritis on the one hand and infection, uraemia and other factors on the other. Uraemia was constantly associated with chronic gastritis, often of severe degree. Severe chronic infections were often associated with severe chronic gastritis but sometimes such infections were associated with an almost normal gastric mucosa.Ulceration of the stomach was found in 15% of the adult cases. The average age of the patients was 67 and the ulcers were undiagnosed during life.Erosions were discovered in 30% of all stomachs exclusive of foetal stomachs. The pathogenesis of erosions and ulcers is briefly discussed. it is suggested that a vascular origin for erosions and ulcers is commoner than has frequently been supposed. This is supported by the common finding of haemorrhage in the mucosa and of all grades of erosion between 'pure' haemorrhagic erosions and typical miniature ulcers.Reference is made to particular cells of the inflamed mucosa and to 5 stomachs of particular interest

VLA observations of a sample of galaxies with high far-infrared luminosities

Preliminary results are presented from a radio survey of galaxies detected by the IRAS minisurvey. It was found that the main difference between galaxies selected in the far infrared and those selected in the optical is that the former have higher radio luminosities and that the radio emission is more centrally concentrated. There is some evidence that the strong central radio sources in the galaxies selected in the infrared are due to star formation, the star formation rate divided by the volume in which the star formation is occuring is 100 to 1000 times greater in the galaxies selected in the infrared than in the disks of normal galaxies

A historical perspective of Governor Mike Foster\u27s Live Mike radio program

Louisiana Governor Mike Foster took to the airwaves on August 10, 2000 with the launch of “Live Mike,” his weekly radio program that would air for 41 weeks during Foster’s second term. Foster, a Republican, served as Governor of Louisiana from January 1996 until January 2004. This study historically chronicles Governor Mike Foster’s weekly radio program, “Live Mike” during and prior to its four years on the air. This historical narrative illustrates how Foster intermingled radio, politics and his personal life to create a weekly radio program that he attempted to use during his second term to relay his message to listeners. By examining the 41 weeks of the show through newspaper accounts, personal interviews and experience, and Governor’s Office records and call logs, the study found some evidence that Foster was able to take his message directly to the people at times without the filter of the media. In doing so, the show caused Foster to leave his introverted tendencies for an hour each week. The show brought Foster down to a human level for the public, but also opened the Governor’s vulnerability to be seen by listeners. The study also shows that while some saw the 8 p.m. time slot as an advantage for Foster by not providing reporters enough time to recheck facts or obtain opposing views before going to print, the late time of the show eventually led to a decreased audience and a lack of news coverage of the program. While the desired audience and impact was not what Foster first envisioned for the 8 p.m. show, it served as a training ground for the governor that allowed him, at the launch of the 2 p.m. show, to portray confidence from behind the microphone and be more effective in reaching out to his listeners
