Phenomenology of Mirror Fermions in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity
Little Higgs models are an interesting alternative to explain electroweak
symmetry breaking without fine-tuning. Supplemented with a discrete symmetry
(T-parity) constraints from electroweak precision data are naturally evaded and
also a viable dark matter candidate is obtained. T-parity implies the existence
of new (mirror) fermions in addition to the heavy gauge bosons of the little
Higgs models. In this paper we consider the effects of the mirror fermions on
the phenomenology of the littlest Higgs model with T-parity at the LHC. We
study the most promising production channels and decay chains for the new
particles. We find that the mirror fermions have a large impact on the
magnitude of signal rates and on the new physics signatures. Realistic

Minimal Informationally Complete Measurements for Pure States
We consider measurements, described by a positive-operator-valued measure
(POVM), whose outcome probabilities determine an arbitrary pure state of a
D-dimensional quantum system. We call such a measurement a pure-state
informationally complete (PSI-complete) POVM. We show that a measurement with
2D-1 outcomes cannot be PSI-complete, and then we construct a POVM with 2D
outcomes that suffices, thus showing that a minimal PSI-complete POVM has 2D
outcomes. We also consider PSI-complete POVMs that have only rank-one POVM
elements and construct an example with 3D-2 outcomes, which is a generalization
of the tetrahedral measurement for a qubit. The question of the minimal number

An immediate-late gene expression module decodes ERK signal duration
The RAF-MEK-ERK signalling pathway controls fundamental, often opposing cellular processes such as proliferation and apoptosis. Signal duration has been identified to play a decisive role in these cell fate decisions. However, it remains unclear how the different early and late responding gene expression modules can discriminate short and long signals. We obtained both protein phosphorylation and gene expression time course data from HEK293 cells carrying an inducible construct of the proto-oncogene RAF By mathematical modelling, we identified a new gene expression module of immediate-late genes (ILGs) distinct in gene expression dynamics and function. We find that mRNA longevity enables these ILGs to respond late and thus translate ERK signal duration into response amplitude. Despite their late response, their GC-rich promoter structure suggested and metabolic labelling with 4SU confirmed that transcription of ILGs is induced immediately. A comparative analysis shows that the principle of duration decoding is conserved in PC12 cells and MCF7 cells, two paradigm cell systems for ERK signal duration. Altogether, our findings suggest that ILGs function as a gene expression module to decode ERK signal duration
A_4 Symmetry and Lepton Masses and Mixing
Stimulated by Ma's idea which explains the tribimaximal neutrino mixing by
assuming an A_4 flavor symmetry, a lepton mass matrix model is investigated. A
Frogatt-Nielsen type model is assumed, and the flavor structures of the masses
and mixing are caused by the VEVs of SU(2)_L-singlet scalars \phi_i^u and
\phi_i^d (i=1,2,3), which are assigned to {\bf 3} and ({\bf 1}, {\bf 1}',{\bf

DDX3 depletion selectively represses translation of structured mRNAs
DDX3 is an RNA chaperone of the DEAD-box family that regulates translation. Its yeast ortholog Ded1 controls the translation of nearly all mRNAs, whereas DDX3 is thought to regulate only a subset of mRNAs. However, the set of mRNAs that are regulated by DDX3 are unknown, along with the relationship between DDX3 binding and activity. Here, we use ribosome profiling, RNA-seq, and PAR-CLIP to define the set of mRNAs that are regulated by DDX3 in human cells. We find that while DDX3 binds most expressed mRNAs, depletion of DDX3 affects the translation level of only a small subset of the transcriptome. We further find that DDX3 binds a site on helix 16 of the human ribosome, placing it immediately adjacent to the mRNA entry channel and translation factor eIF4B. Translation changes caused by depleting DDX3 levels or through chemical inhibition mimicking a dominant negative allele are different. Taken together, our data defines the subset of the transcriptome that is responsive to DDX3 inhibition, with relevance for basic biology and disease states where DDX3 expression is altered
Complex flavour couplings in supersymmetry and unexpected CP-violation in the decay B -> phi K
Complex flavour couplings (off-diagonal mass terms) in the squark sector of
supersymmetric theories may drastically alter both the rate and the
CP-violating asymmetry of certain B-meson decays. We consider the effects of
couplings that induce b -> s transitions and lead to final state with
strangeness one. We investigate the bounds that must be satisfied by the new
terms and explore the possible implications on direct and mixing induced
asymmetries in the charged and neutral B -> J/Psi K and B -> phi K decays.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figure
Ballistic Annihilation
Ballistic annihilation with continuous initial velocity distributions is
investigated in the framework of Boltzmann equation. The particle density and
the rms velocity decay as and , with the
exponents depending on the initial velocity distribution and the spatial
dimension. For instance, in one dimension for the uniform initial velocity
distribution we find . We also solve the Boltzmann equation
for Maxwell particles and very hard particles in arbitrary spatial dimension.
These solvable cases provide bounds for the decay exponents of the hard sphere

Mechanism of virus attenuation by codon pair deoptimization
Codon pair deoptimization is an efficient virus attenuation strategy, but the mechanism that leads to attenuation is unknown. The strategy involves synthetic recoding of viral genomes that alters the positions of synonymous codons, thereby increasing the number of suboptimal codon pairs and CpG dinucleotides in recoded genomes. Here we identify the molecular mechanism of codon pair deoptimization-based attenuation by studying recoded influenza A viruses. We show that suboptimal codon pairs cause attenuation, whereas the increase of CpG dinucleotides has no effect. Furthermore, we show that suboptimal codon pairs reduce both mRNA stability and translation efficiency of codon pair-deoptimized genes. Consequently, reduced protein production directly causes virus attenuation. Our study provides evidence that suboptimal codon pairs are major determinants of mRNA stability. Additionally, it demonstrates that codon pair bias can be used to increase mRNA stability and protein production of synthetic genes in many areas of biotechnology
`Natural Masslessness Conservation' for neutrinos in two Higgs-doublet models
We present a model which supplements the Standard Electroweak Model with
three right-handed neutrinos and one extra scalar doublet which does not
develop a vacuum expectation value. With the aid of a discrete symmetry the
neutrinos are kept strictly massless. This model has several interesting
features. It has unsuppressed lepton flavour violating processes, in particular
, hinting at the possibility that these may soon be
within experimental reach. The and interactions become non-diagonal at
one loop level. In particular, a non-trivial leptonic mixing matrix is seen to
arise from the clash between the charged gauge boson and the charged scalar
