Liver transplantation in biliary atresia with concomitant hepatoma.

    Get PDF
Two cases are reported in which the very infrequently reported association was found of liver cell carcinoma and biliary cirrhosis secondary to congenital biliary atresia. A search of the literature revealed 4 previous reports of cases with similar pathology. Our 2 patients were both operated upon within the first few months of life, at which time congenital biliary atresia was documented, and in 1 instance temporarily corrected. They ran a progressive downhill course until they both received replacement livers, one at 4 years of age and the other at 12, at which times hepatoma was found in the excised cirrhotic livers. One patient is in good health 18 months post-transplantation. The other developed metastases but died of gastro-intestinal bleeding and pneumonia 76 days post-transplantation

    Vigs invisier: ’n teologies-etiese besínning

In this article the characteristics of Aids are touched upon and then the (rather difficult) question whether Aids should be seen as God’s judgement over the sin (immorality) of man is discussed. Some typical aspects (sexual, medical, political and personal) are discussed and furthermore the line of argumentation is continued by elaborating on the calling of the church, the task of authorities and society as well as the responsibility of the family and the individual. The conclusion arrived at is that however serious the case of Aids may be, there is no room for pessimism, because Christians expect and await the full realisation of the kingdom of God This expectation does not nullify but maximises man’s responsibilty to fight Aids with all moral means at his disposal

Another Cuneiform Tablet from Drehem in the Ur III Period

Although M. Sigrist and others spent some time in translating cuneiform texts at the Siegfried Horn Museum, there was one more unpublished Drehem tablet in the James White Library Archives and another tablet. The Adventist Heritage Center of the James White Library of Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI, obtained this tablet from a private collector, George Barr Suhrie (1905-1985) in 1976. This text dates to the 45th year of Šulgi which is 2050/49 BCE. It is an economic text listing animals brought for various deities: En-lil; Nin-lil; by at least three individuals from Nippur to Drehem. Lugalazida was the son of the king, Ursukkal was a wine attendant and Šešdad was a temple-administrator. A large number of animals, bull, cows, sheep, ewes, kids, goats, equids, were received by Ilum-bani in 2050/2049 BCE. Two texts from the Oriental Institute of Chicago: Text 235 = A4977 and Text 417 = A2978, are dating also to Šulgi’s 45th year with the order of the items in the year formula identical to AUAHCCT 1 Reverse line 12. Biblical chronology is an exact science and according to strict biblical reckoning, with the 4th year of Solomon as 970 BCE, Jacob was born in 2080 BCE, 30 years before this tablet. The influence of the Ur III dynasty, with Šulgi deifying himself, can be seen in Jacob’s household and others with him, when he asked them to “put away the foreign gods among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments,” Genesis 35:2. Of course this event was a decade or two after this tablet because Esau got married in 2040 BCE and Jacob left afterwards

Seventy-five years of Church Law in the Faculty of Theology of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van AfrikaChurch Law has been taught for seventy-five years in the Faculty of Theology of the Nederduitsch Hervormde Kerk van Afrika. This task has been done by two ministersof the Church, professors S P Engelbrecht (1921- 1956) and A D Pont (1957-1992). To determine the standard of work done, their publications are judged by comparison with the church law of the Reformation, as defined by the presbyterial-synodal church concept. The study comes to the conclusion that the work was of a very high standard

Die politieke dimensie in die romankuns van André P. Brink: 'n Etiese evaluering

The author justifies writing about the political dimension in the novels of André P. Brink on the basis that committed literature also embraces the political dimension as one of its m any dimensions. He thus proposes to deal not with whether but how this dimension manifests its e lf in the literature. A rising line of political involvement is detected in the late st novels - and this tendency can be defined in terms of "in situation alized violence ". An analysis of a number of novels, including Kennis van die aand, Houd-den-bek and Muur van die Pes underscores his views, and reveals, too, a view that the church is caught up in pietistic immobility, and that the novels abound in Existentia list, Marxist and even at times Calvin is ethical motifs. The political dimension is then evaluated in terms of Calvin is views and the Calvin is tradition - especially in view of the concept of the justifiability of violence and in surreciton

Church polity? The position of church polity and church governmentIt is generally accepted that John Calvin can be referred to as the founder of the presbyterial-synodal form of church government which is found in the Reformed Churches. It would therefore be appropriate to focus on his views and to indicate to what extent he influenced the notion that Jesus Christ is Head of the Church and Lord of the world. If it can once again be concluded that there is a close relation between Church, Confession and Church Ordinance, then it is quite evident that Church polity occupies a fundamental place in the Reformed Churches which must be treated with greater concern

Liberate konserwatisme? H.G. Stoker en die ideologie van apartheid: 'n Verkenning

In this article the intriguing question is discussed how it could be possible that a Christian philosopher o f the stature of H. G. Stoker could legitimise a policy of apartheid. It is argued that each ideology has a blinding effect on its supporters; thus making it almost impossible to take a critical stance towards it. It has been attempted to explain in more detail that some key features of the Biblical message were overlooked and tinder-developed in the philosophy of Stoker
