    Raymond Williams: The Working-Class Academic

    Get PDF
This paper highlights the continued relevance of the working-class academic Raymond Williams (31 August 1921 – 26 January 1988) to today’s students and academics. It will do this by introducing Williams and his key ideas in the form of a short think piece. This overview can be used to compliment more in-depth studies for seeking to understand social phenomena. The key concepts introduced within this paper focus on, culture as a whole way of life, ‘structure of feeling’, Williams’ debate with Marxism, historical analysis and his approaches to methodology

Marine-Nonmarine Relationships in the Cenozoic Section of California

    Get PDF
Highly fossiliferous marine sediments of Cenozoic age are widely distributed in the coastal parts of central and southern California, as well as in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley region farther inland. Even more widespread are nonmarine, chiefly terrestrial, sequences of Cenozoic strata, many of which contain vertebrate faunas characterized by a dominance of mammalian forms. These strata are most abundant in the Mojave Desert region and in the interior parts of areas that lie nearer the coast. Marine and nonmarine strata are in juxtaposition or interfinger with one another at many places, especially in the southern Coast Ranges and the San Joaquin basin to the east, in the Transverse Ranges and adjacent basins, and in several parts of the Peninsular Range region and the Coachella-Imperial Valley to the east. These occurrences of closely related marine and nonmarine deposits permit critical comparisons between the Pacific Coast mammalian (terrestrial) and invertebrate (marine) chronologies, and it is with these comparisons-examined in the light of known stratigraphic relations-that this paper is primarily concerned. The writers have drawn freely upon the published record for geologic and paleontologic data. In addition, Durham has reviewed many of the invertebrate faunas and has checked the field relations of marine strata in parts of the Ventura and Soledad basins, the Tejon Hills, and the Cammatta Ranch; Jahns has studied new vertebrate material from the Soledad basin and has mapped this area and critical areas in the vicinity of San Diego, in the Ventura basin, and in the Caliente Range; and Savage has made a detailed appraisal of the vertebrate assemblages, and has mapped critical areas in the Tejon Hills. The areas and localities that have been most carefully scrutinized are shown in figure 1. The manuscript was reviewed in detail by G. Edward Lewis of the U. S. Geological Survey, who made numerous comments and suggestions that resulted in considerable improvement. It should be noted that his views are not wholly compatible with some of those expressed in this paper, and that his critical appraisal thus was particularly helpful

    Multi-color carrier-envelope-phase stabilization for high-repetition-rate multi-pulse coherent synthesis

    Get PDF
Using a zero-offset carrier-envelope locking technique, we have synthesized an octave-spanning composite frequency comb exhibiting 132-attosecond timing jitter between the constituent pulses over a one-second observation window. In the frequency domain, this composite comb has a modal structure and coherence which are indistinguishable from those of a comb that might be produced by a hypothetical single mode locked oscillator of equivalent bandwidth. The associated phase stability enables the participating multi-color pulse sequences to be coherently combined, representing an example of multi-pulse synthesis using a femtosecond oscillator

A Method for Shortening of the Rat Spine and its Neurologic Consequences

    Get PDF
Large laboratory animals are the usual choice for complex surgical procedures on the spine and spinal cord, such as shortening of the spine. It would, however, be advantageous to be able to use a small inexpensive mammal like the rat. We describe a procedure which allows thoracic spondylectomy (T8-T9) to be performed in the rat with a satisfactory survival rate (69%). Functional consequences of the procedure on animals with uninjured spinal cord were monitored over a period of six months, at which time histologic examination was performed. There was a good correlation between operative trauma, consisting of mechanical injury to the cord assessed from the surgical notes, and the duration of postoperative spinal shock. Animals for which the cord appeared laminated or deformed at the time of sacrifice tended to show incomplete functional recovery. Cord cavitation developed, in most surviving animals (78%) but did not have a measurable adverse effect on functional outcome. In the present study, the cord was not intentionally injured; however, availability of this procedure may facilitate the future development of methods to implement recovery of function following spinal cord injury

Chrysobothris rugosiceps Melsheimer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is reported from Washington State from a single specimen caught in a Lindgren funnel trap. Clearly this represents an exotic to the region, as the closest known occurrence of this native U.S.A. species is in the Dakotas

The exotic \u3ci\u3eAgrilus cyanescens\u3c/i\u3e (Ratzeburg) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) is discovered in Oregon

In two separate occurrences, graduates of the Oregon Forest Pest Detector program discovered the exotic Agrilus cyanescens (Ratzeburg) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Portland, Oregon, damaging a backyard shrub, Lonicera involucrata (Rich.) Banks ex Spreng. (Caprifoliaceae). Although first detected in the USA 99 years ago, the known occurrence nearest to Oregon is in Utah

Do the determinants of mental wellbeing vary by housing tenure status? Secondary analysis of a 2017 cross-sectional residents survey in Cornwall, South West of England

    Get PDF
Housing is a social determinant of health, comprising multiple interrelated attributes; the current study was developed to examine whether differences in mental wellbeing across housing tenure types might relate to individual, living, or neighbourhood circumstances. To achieve this aim, an exploratory cross-sectional analysis was conducted using secondary data from a county-wide resident survey undertaken by Cornwall Council in 2017. The survey included questions about individual, living, or neighbourhood circumstances, as well as mental wellbeing (Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale). A random sample of 30,152 households in Cornwall were sent the survey, from whom 11,247 valid responses were received (38% response), but only 4085 (13.5%) provided complete data for this study. Stratified stepwise models were estimated to generate hypotheses about inequalities in mental wellbeing related to housing tenure. Health, life satisfaction, and social connectedness were found to be universal determinants of mental wellbeing, whereas issues related to living circumstances (quality of housing, fuel poverty) were only found to be related to wellbeing among residents of privately owned and rented properties. Sense of safety and belonging (neighbourhood circumstances) were also found to be related to wellbeing, which together suggests that whole system place-based home and people/community-centred approaches are needed to reduce inequalities.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
