Nitrate Poisoning in Swine
On July 23, 1959, a call was received from a client Wll0 reported that his hogs were sick. Upon arrival at the client\u27s farm, two dead pigs were found. Three other pigs were weak and when forced to move, did so at a staggering gait. These pigs were examined. The temperatures ranged from 101.5° to 102.7,° well within the normal range. Olle pig was noted to be breathing rather rapidly and evidence of a watery diarrhea was noted on all of the affected pigs. One of the pigs was unable to rise. The Ed.D. as Investment in Professional Development: Cultivating Practitioner Knowledge
As teacher educators and participants in the US-based Carnegie Project for the Education Doctorate (CPED) initiative to differentiate the Ed.D/Ph.D., we have programmatic commitments to the centrality of practitioner knowledge for shaping professional development. Through CPED, we structure opportunities for local educators to develop their professional practices within their graduate studies toward an Ed.D, while maintaining full-time educational work commitments. Concurrently, we examine and document how CPED creates room, alongside concrete practice, to cultivate, promote, and value the voices, sensibilities, and capacities of practitioners engaged in advanced practices. In doing so, we confront marginalization of practitionersâ perspectives in the field and seek conditions and supports that insist on educatorsâ primary role in the complex project of education worldwide
Spectroscopic and redox properties of amine-unctionalized K_2[Os-^(II)(bpy)(CN)_4] complexes
We report the first examples of amine-functionalized K_2[Os^(II)(bpy)(CN)_4] (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) complexes. The tetracyanoosmate complexes were prepared by UV irradiation (λ = 254 nm) of K_4[Os^(II)(CN)_6] and primary amine-functionalized bpy ligands in acidic aqueous media. The aqueous solution pH dependences of the spectroscopic and redox properties of 4,4'- and 5,5'-substituted complexes have been investigated. The pendant amine functional groups and coordinated cyanide ligands are basic sites that can be sequentially protonated, thereby allowing systematic tuning of electrochemical and optical spectroscopic properties
Evaporative water loss from birds: Effects of artificial radiation

Metabolism (Vo2) and evaporative water loss (mwe) were measured in black, male Lark Buntings (Calamospiza melanocorys) at 10, 30 and 35[deg]C with and without supplemental radiation (simulating sunlight).2. 2. Vo2 was reduced by radiation at 10[deg]C but not 30[deg] or 35[deg]C.3. 3. mwe was unaffected by radiation at 10[deg]C, however; it was increased 36% at 30[deg]C and 150% at 35[deg]C.4. 4. Using ocean models to predict spatial and temporal variation in marine carbon isotopes
Natural-abundance stable isotope ratios provide a wealth of ecological information relating to food web structure, trophic level, and location. The correct interpretation of stable isotope data requires an understanding of spatial and temporal variation in the isotopic compositions at the base of the food web. In marine pelagic environments, accurate interpretation of stable isotope data is hampered by a lack of reliable, spatio-temporally distributed measurements of baseline isotopic compositions. In this study, we present a relatively simple, process-based carbon isotope model that predicts the spatio-temporal distributions of the carbon isotope composition of phytoplankton (here expressed as ÎŽ13CPLK) across the global ocean at one degree and monthly resolution. The model is driven by output from a coupled physics-biogeochemistry model, NEMO-MEDUSA, and operates offline; it could also be coupled to alternative underlying ocean model systems. Model validation is challenged by the same lack of spatio-temporally explicit data that motivates model development, but predictions from our model successfully reproduce major spatial patterns in carbon isotope values observed in zooplankton, and are consistent with simulations from alternative models. Model predictions represent an initial hypothesis of spatial and temporal variation in carbon isotopic baselines in ocean areas where a few data are currently available, and provide the best currently available tool to estimate spatial and temporal variation in baseline isotopic compositions at ocean basin to global scales
Molecular imaging: novel tools in visualizing rheumatoid arthritis
Molecular imaging is a rapidly emerging field in biomedical research, aiming at the visualization, characterization and quantification of molecular and cellular processes non-invasively within intact living organisms. To sense biological processes such as gene expression, angiogenesis, apoptosis or cell trafficking in vivo, imaging reporter agents that interact specifically with molecular targets and appropriate imaging systems are currently under development. In rheumatoid arthritis, these novel tools will be used to evaluate physiological and pathophysiological processes, to facilitate diagnosis and monitor therapeutic regimens, to enable reliable prognosis and to support the development of new therapies. In this review, we summarize the basic principles of molecular imaging, such as the development of molecular imaging agents, the actual capabilities of different imaging modalities and the most recent advances in molecular imaging, demonstrating the potential of this technology. With regard to their applicability in rheumatic diseases, we discuss potential molecular targets, current experimental approaches and the future prospects for molecular imaging in rheumatoid arthriti
Protecting biodiversity and economic returns in resource-rich tropical forests.
In pursuit of socioeconomic development, many countries are expanding oil and mineral extraction into tropical forests. These activities seed access to remote, biologically rich areas, thereby endangering global biodiversity. Here we demonstrate that conservation solutions that effectively balance the protection of biodiversity and economic revenues are possible in biologically valuable regions. Using spatial data on oil profits and predicted species and ecosystem extents, we optimise the protection of 741 terrestrial species and 20 ecosystems of the Ecuadorian Amazon, across a range of opportunity costs (i.e. sacrifices of extractive profit). For such an optimisation, giving up 5% of a year's oil profits (US 1.7 billion), and uses only marginally less land, to achieve equivalent levels of ecological protection. Applying spatial statistics to remotely sensed, historic deforestation data, we further focus the optimisation to areas most threatened by imminent forest loss. We identify Emergency Conservation Targets: areas that are essential to a cost-effective conservation reserve network and at imminent risk of destruction, thus requiring urgent and effective protection. Governments should employ the methods presented here when considering extractive led development options, to responsibly manage the associated ecological-economic trade-offs and protect natural capital. The hysteroscopic view of infertility: the mid-secretory endometrium and treatment success towards pregnancy
The purpose of this study was the analysis of a correlation, in infertile patients, between the quality of the endometrium based on its vascularisation and the chances of conception. Hysteroscopy was carried out to determine the quality of the endometrial surface using the Sakumoto-Masamoto classification ("goodâ vs. "poorâ endometrium) in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle. The results were set in relation to the outcome of the subsequent infertility treatment, i.e. the establishment of a pregnancy within the study period (4years). In 108 (67%) of the 162 followed-up patients, the endometrium was endoscopically classified as "goodâ, while in 54 (33%) the result was "poorâ. The overall pregnancy rate was 37% (60 patients); 47 of all pregnancies (78%) occurred in women with a "goodâ endometrium while 13 (22%) had a "poorâ classification. This positive association between the establishment of a pregnancy in the follow-up and a "good" classification of the endometrial vasculature in the group with a "good" endometrium was significant (Pâ=â0.0165, Fisher's exact test).
