Perturbative analysis of two-temperature radiative shocks with multiple cooling processes
The structure of the hot downstream region below a radiative accretion shock, such as that of an accreting compact object, may oscillate because of a global thermal instability. The oscillatory behaviour depends on the functional forms of the cooling processes, the energy exchanges of electrons and ions in the shock-heated matter, and the boundary conditions. We analyse the stability of a shock with unequal electron and ion temperatures, where the cooling consists of thermal bremsstrahlung radiation which promotes instability, plus a competing process which tends to stabilize the shock. The effect of transverse perturbations is considered also. As an illustration, we study the special case in which the stabilizing cooling process is of order 3/20 in density and 5/2 in temperature, which is an approximation for the effects of cyclotron cooling in magnetic cataclysmic variables. We vary the efficiency of the second cooling process, the strength of the electron–ion exchange and the ratio of electron and ion pressures at the shock, to examine particular effects on the stability properties and frequencies of oscillation modes
Pipelined digital SAR azimuth correlator using hybrid FFT-transversal filter
A synthetic aperture radar system (SAR) having a range correlator is provided with a hybrid azimuth correlator which utilizes a block-pipe-lined fast Fourier transform (FFT). The correlator has a predetermined FFT transform size with delay elements for delaying SAR range correlated data so as to embed in the Fourier transform operation a corner-turning function as the range correlated SAR data is converted from the time domain to a frequency domain. The azimuth correlator is comprised of a transversal filter to receive the SAR data in the frequency domain, a generator for range migration compensation and azimuth reference functions, and an azimuth reference multiplier for correlation of the SAR data. Following the transversal filter is a block-pipelined inverse FFT used to restore azimuth correlated data in the frequency domain to the time domain for imaging
Analyzing Android Browser Apps for file:// Vulnerabilities
Securing browsers in mobile devices is very challenging, because these
browser apps usually provide browsing services to other apps in the same
device. A malicious app installed in a device can potentially obtain sensitive
information through a browser app. In this paper, we identify four types of
attacks in Android, collectively known as FileCross, that exploits the
vulnerable file:// to obtain users' private files, such as cookies, bookmarks,
and browsing histories. We design an automated system to dynamically test 115
browser apps collected from Google Play and find that 64 of them are vulnerable
to the attacks. Among them are the popular Firefox, Baidu and Maxthon browsers,
and the more application-specific ones, including UC Browser HD for tablet
users, Wikipedia Browser, and Kids Safe Browser. A detailed analysis of these
browsers further shows that 26 browsers (23%) expose their browsing interfaces
unintentionally. In response to our reports, the developers concerned promptly
patched their browsers by forbidding file:// access to private file zones,
disabling JavaScript execution in file:// URLs, or even blocking external
file:// URLs. We employ the same system to validate the ten patches received
from the developers and find one still failing to block the vulnerability.Comment: The paper has been accepted by ISC'14 as a regular paper (see

Apparatus for determining changes in limb volume
Measuring apparatus for determining changes in the volume of limbs or other boty extremities by determining the cross-sectional area of such limbs many comprise a transmitter including first and second transducers for positioning on the surface of the limb at a predetermined distance there between, and a receiver including a receiver crystal for positioning on the surface of the limb. The distance between the receiver crystal and the first and second transducers are represented by respective first and second chords of the cross-section of the limb and the predetermined distance between the first and second transducers is represented by a third chord of the limb cross section
