The number of new immigrants and international marriages is increasing in Taiwan, resulting in growing interest in multicultural and multilingual education. The purpose of the present study was to explore public elementary school teachers’ perspectives and experiences regarding the implementation of education policies for new immigrants and their children through an in-depth analysis of a principal, teachers, and parent-teachers at two public elementary schools in rural Taiwan. I examined education policies that were established in response to concerns involving the new immigrants and their children in Taiwan. Using an interpretive phenomenology methodological framework, I obtained a deeper understanding of elementary school teachers’, principal’s, and parent-teachers’ experience of teaching English and their mother languages and how they perceive the new immigrant children compared with Taiwanese children. The findings of this study are based on interviews, class observations, education policy documents, and field notes. I applied culturally responsive teaching theory to enhance the analysis and interpretation of the findings. The teachers perceived multicultural education as increasing cultural awareness, developing positive racial and ethnic attitudes, and addressing the inequality and social justice of new immigrant groups. From the participants’ experiences and perspectives, this study presents a deeper understanding of the multicultural and multilingual practices in the elementary schools in Taiwan

Resummation of Boson-Jet Correlation at Hadron Colliders

We perform a precise calculation of the transverse momentum (qT\vec{q}_T) distribution of the boson+jet system in boson production events. The boson can be either a photon, WW, ZZ or Higgs boson with mass mVm_V, and qT\vec{q}_T is the sum of the transverse momenta of the boson and the leading jet with magnitude qT=qTq_T=|\vec q_T|. Using renormalization group techniques and soft-collinear effective theory, we resum logarithms log(Q/qT)\log(Q/q_T) and logR\log R at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy including the non-global logarithms, where QQ and RR are respectively the hard scattering energy and the radius of the jet. Specifically, we investigate two scenarios of pTJmVp^J_T \lesssim m_V or pTJmVp^J_T \gtrsim m_V in ZZ+jet events, and we examine the qTq_T distributions with different jet radii and study the effect of non-global logarithms. In the end we compare our theoretical calculations with Monte Carlo simulations and data from the LHC.Comment: 35 pages, 7 figure

Data of NODDI diffusion metrics in the brain and computer simulation of hybrid diffusion imaging (HYDI) acquisition scheme

This article provides NODDI diffusion metrics in the brains of 52 healthy participants and computer simulation data to support compatibility of hybrid diffusion imaging (HYDI), "Hybrid diffusion imaging"[1] acquisition scheme in fitting neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) model, "NODDI: practical in vivo neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging of the human brain"[2]. HYDI is an extremely versatile diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) technique that enables various analyzes methods using a single diffusion dataset. One of the diffusion data analysis methods is the NODDI computation, which models the brain tissue with three compartments: fast isotropic diffusion (e.g., cerebrospinal fluid), anisotropic hindered diffusion (e.g., extracellular space), and anisotropic restricted diffusion (e.g., intracellular space). The NODDI model produces microstructural metrics in the developing brain, aging brain or human brain with neurologic disorders. The first dataset provided here are the means and standard deviations of NODDI metrics in 48 white matter region-of-interest (ROI) averaging across 52 healthy participants. The second dataset provided here is the computer simulation with initial conditions guided by the first dataset as inputs and gold standard for model fitting. The computer simulation data provide a direct comparison of NODDI indices computed from the HYDI acquisition [1] to the NODDI indices computed from the originally proposed acquisition [2]. These data are related to the accompanying research article "Age Effects and Sex Differences in Human Brain White Matter of Young to Middle-Aged Adults: A DTI, NODDI, and q-Space Study" [3]

Hybrid monovision therapy in a patient with retinitis pigmentosa

AbstractA 41-year-old female was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) after bilateral implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). Due to persistent dissatisfaction with her visual performance, she came to our hospital for medical help. We exchanged the multifocal IOL in the dominant eye with a monofocal IOL (hybrid monovision therapy), and the visual inconvenience was alleviated to a large extent. To our knowledge, this is the first case report on the effect of hybrid monovision therapy applied to a patient with RP

Computation-Performance Optimization of Convolutional Neural Networks with Redundant Kernel Removal

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are widely employed in modern computer vision algorithms, where the input image is convolved iteratively by many kernels to extract the knowledge behind it. However, with the depth of convolutional layers getting deeper and deeper in recent years, the enormous computational complexity makes it difficult to be deployed on embedded systems with limited hardware resources. In this paper, we propose two computation-performance optimization methods to reduce the redundant convolution kernels of a CNN with performance and architecture constraints, and apply it to a network for super resolution (SR). Using PSNR drop compared to the original network as the performance criterion, our method can get the optimal PSNR under a certain computation budget constraint. On the other hand, our method is also capable of minimizing the computation required under a given PSNR drop.Comment: This paper was accepted by 2018 The International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS
