Julia Margaret Cameron\u27s Photographs as Paintings

This paper argues that in order to better understand the photographic techniques, and compositional choices employed by Julia Margaret Cameron, one must analyze them in terms of the language of paintings. By using photography to stage painterly tableaus, Cameron blurred reality and fiction, the result of which is the equalization of all those she photographed, be they famed Victorian poets or female maids

Byrd v. Byrd, 137 Nev. Adv. Op. 60 (Nev. Ct. App. Sept. 30, 2021).

After her ex-husband, Grady Byrd, suddenly stopped making payments pursuant to their 2014 divorce decree, Caterina Byrd moved the district court to enforce same. During the proceedings, Grady revealed that he had waived his military retirement pay in exchange for veterans’ disability benefits, and therefore Caterina was entitled to significantly less money than she had originally anticipated. Caterina moved the district court for NRCP 60(b)(6) relief, arguing that she would not have agreed to certain terms in the marital settlement agreement had she known Grady would waive his military retirement pay. The district court ordered an evidentiary hearing, and Grady’s request to appear by audio-visual transmission was summarily denied. The district court ultimately granted Caterina’s NRCP 60(b)(6) request and modified the 2014 divorce decree to award Caterina lifetime alimony and additionally ordered Grady to pay Caterina directly from his veteran’s disability benefits. Grady appealed the modification, and the Nevada Court of Appeals reversed the district court. The Court held that (1) NRCP 60(b)(6) relief was inappropriate because Caterina’s request actually sounded in a different clause than Rule 60(b)(6); (2) federal law preempts state courts from distributing alimony directly from veterans’ disability benefits; and (3) district courts must analyze the relevant SCR Part IX-B(B)(1)(6) factors and make a good cause finding when a party requests to appear via audio-visual transmission

In re Guardianship of Jones, 138 Nev. Adv. Op. 6 (Nev. Ct. App. Feb. 24, 2022)

This case is about whether the district court properly granted attorney fees to guardians from the estate of the protected person under NRS 159.344. Donna and Robyn, daughters of the appellant and protected person, Jones, acted as her temporary guardians for a period in 2019 before their sister Kimberly was appointed general guardian. The dispute involves the attorney fees accumulated during Donna and Robyn’s guardianship period. Jones first argued that the award itself was improper due to the presumption against such fees payable from the protected person’s estate. The Court rejected this argument, holding that the district court did not abuse its discretion by awarding attorney fees because it properly considered the relevant NRS 159.344 factors, and determined that the fees were just, reasonable, and necessary. Jones next argued that the amount awarded was excessive due to the guardianship’s short duration. The Court again rejected Jones’s argument, holding that the district court acted reasonably, given the complexity of the work involved, as complexity was the proper factor, not duration. The Court of Appeals affirmed

M.Ed. University of Hawaii at Manoa 2016.Includes bibliographical references. In the United States, English Language Learner (ELL) students, defined as having limited English proficiency, are required to take remedial education during their college years. The current research studied the factors that affect ELL students’ post-secondary graduation success rates in the State of Hawai‘i. Graduation success was measured in terms of completing the requirements within three years or six years for an associate or bachelor’s degree, respectively. This study covered students’ last two years of high school and primarily their first year of college. Three logistic regression models were developed with variables included from high school and college in order to predict students’ readiness for college study and graduation success rates. Results indicated that HSA test scores, number of years enrolled in AP classes, credits earned beyond 25 credits, first English course enrolled in during freshman year, and whether or not a student received Pell grant support were statistically significant predictors. The findings primarily reflected the importance of English proficiency and Pell grant support in students’ graduation success. Moreover, the effect of ELL status on students’ graduation success rates was not the same at different levels of students’ socioeconomic background. These findings are discussed in terms of their theoretical and practical importance

Tesi

Abstract

Introduction

Central serous chorioretinopathy is characterized by serous neurosensory detachment of the macula and it usually resolves spontaneously with good visual prognosis. In some patients, however, the serous retinal detachment might be very extensive and can result in bullous exudative retinal detachment. We evaluated the use of half-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy for the treatment of bullous retinal detachment in idiopathic central serous chorioretinopathy.

Case presentation

We report the case of a 51-year-old Chinese man who presented with blurred vision in his right eye and superior visual field defect due to bullous variant of central serous chorioretinopathy. No improvement in vision and retinal detachment was noted after three months of observation and a short course of oral acetazolamide. He was then treated with half-dose verteporfin photodynamic therapy and his visual acuity improved from 20/70 to 20/25 within one month of treatment. Three months after photodynamic therapy, there was complete resolution of sub-retinal fluid and bullous retinal detachment. No recurrence of central serous chorioretinopathy was noted in three years of follow-up.

Conclusion

We report the beneficial effect of photodynamic therapy with half-dose verteporfin as a treatment option for bullous retinal detachment caused by central serous chorioretinopathy.</p

Characterization of the Fiber Connectivity Profile of the Cerebral Cortex in Schizotypal Personality Disorder: A Pilot Study

Schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) is considered one of the classic disconnection syndromes. However, the specific cortical disconnectivity pattern has not been fully investigated. In this study, we aimed to explore significant alterations in whole-cortex structural connectivity in SPD individuals (SPDs) by combining the techniques of brain surface morphometry and white matter (WM) tractography. Diffusion and structural MR data were collected from twenty subjects with SPD (all males; age, 19.7 ± 0.9 yrs) and eighteen healthy controls (all males; age, 20.3 ± 1.0 yrs). To measure the structural connectivity for a given unit area of the cortex, the fiber connectivity density (FiCD) value was proposed and calculated as the sum of the fractional anisotropy of all the fibers connecting to that unit area in tractography. Then, the resultant whole-cortex FiCD maps were compared in a vertex-wise manner between SPDs and controls. Compared with normal controls, SPDs showed significantly decreased FiCD in the rostral middle frontal gyrus (crossing BA9 and BA10) and significantly increased FiCD in the anterior part of the fusiform/inferior temporal cortex (P < 0.05, Monte Carlo simulation corrected). Moreover, the gray matter volume extracted from the left rostral middle frontal cluster was observed to be significantly greater in the SPD group (P = 0.02). Overall, this study identifies a decrease in connectivity in the left middle frontal cortex as a key neural deficit at the whole-cortex level in SPD, thus providing insight into its neuropathological basis
