History in today\u27s business school
Members of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business were surveyed to determine to what extent the history of various business school subjects (accounting, economics, management, etc.) was a part of today\u27s curricula. Findings indicated widespread teaching of history and the feeling that more should be done. However, the findings also indicate that much of the current teaching is not being done in separate courses by professional historians or even those interested in history. Implications for curricula development are discussed
The Processing, Mechanical Properties and Bioactivity of Strontium based Glass Polyalkenoate Cements
The suitability of zinc-based glass polyalkenoate cements (GPCs) for use in orthopaedics can be improved by the substitution of strontium into the glass phase which should impart improved radiopacity and bone forming properties to the cements without retarding strength. The purpose of this research was to produce novel GPCs based on calcium-strontium-zinc-silicate glasses and to evaluate their mechanical properties and biocompatibility with the ultimate objective of developing a new range of cements for skeletal applications. Three glass compositions, based on incremental substitutions of strontium for calcium, were synthesized; BT100 (0.16CaO, 0.36ZnO, 0.48SiO2), BT101 (0.04SrO, 0.12CaO, 0.36ZnO, 0.48SiO2) and BT102 (0.08SrO 0.08CaO, 0.36ZnO, 0.48SiO2). Each glass was then mixed with varying concentrations and molecular weights of polyacrylic acids in order to determine the working times, setting times, compressive strengths and biaxial flexural strengths of the novel cements. The maximum working time and setting time achieved was 29 and 110 s respectively; which, at present is inadequate for current clinical procedures. However, the optimum compressive and biaxial flexural strengths were up to 75 and 34 MPa respectively indicating that these formulations have potential in load bearing applications. Importantly, the substitution of Ca with Sr in the glasses did not have a deleterious effect on strengths or working times. Finally, the bioactivity of the best performing cements was determined in vitro using simulated body fluid. It was found that all cements facilitate the formation of an amorphous calcium phosphate at their surface which increases in density and coverage with time, indicating that these cement will bond directly to bone in vivo. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
Accounting history in today\u27s business schools
Slocum and Sriram\u27s [2001] study of teaching accounting history found a decline from 1985-1997 in the number of courses with historical content at the doctoral and undergraduate level. Is this development a singular event for accounting or an example of what is happening in other business disciplines? Our study presents the results of a longitudinal and cross-disciplinary survey of members of AACSB International to determine the current state of the teaching of history in business schools. We find a similar decline in other business disciplines and offer suggestions about the relevance of history and steps that might be taken to encourage its study
Electronic Journals in Business Schools: Legitimacy, Acceptance, and Use
This research provides insight into perceptions regarding electronic journals: a technological innovation in academia. Acceptance of electronic journals among business school faculty has two hurdles to overcome: technological and, more challenging, garnering legitimacy within the academic community. A survey targeted at business school faculty in the United States was conducted investigating faculty perceptions about the acceptance of electronic journals in their academic discipline. The findings suggest that at the time of publication, electronic publications were seen as less desirable than paper counterparts for tenure and review. However, it appears that electronic counterparts of existing journals would maintain their legitimacy from a promotion and tenure perspective, suggesting that the perceived legitimacy of the journal is the critical hurdle to overcome
A Critical Review of Decision Support Systems Foundational Articles
Abstract Decision Support Systems (DSS) is a mature field of study with an extensive conceptual and empirical literature. This research study provides a starting point for learning and reviewing the foundation literature of the field. Decision support and analytics researchers can benefit from revisiting the methodologies, identifying under-explored ideas, and hopefully identifying visionary concepts from thought leaders who established the DSS research stream. This article reports a systematic examination of the DSS foundational literature published in MIS Quarterly during its first fifteen years of publication -- 1977-1991. In addition to examining the relevance of these articles to current and future research, the findings of the study provide a reference point of DSS research categories. Articles were categorized in terms of theory, methods, concepts and perspectives about computerized decision support that enrich research and encourage future exploration
