    Ensemble averaged dynamic modeling

    The possibility of using the information from simultaneous equivalent Large Eddy Simulations (LAS) for improving the subgrid scale modeling is investigated. An ensemble average dynamic model is proposed as an alternative to the usual spatial average versions. It is shown to be suitable independently of the existence of any homogeneity directions, and its formulation is thus universal. The ensemble average dynamic model is shown to give very encouraging results for as few as 16 simultaneous LES's

    Quasiparticle coherence and the nature of the metal-insulator phase transition in Nax_xCoO2_2

    Layered cobaltates embody novel realizations of correlated quantum matter on a spin-1/2 triangular lattice. We report a high-resolution systematic photoemission study of the insulating cobaltates (Na1/2CoO2 and K1/2CoO2). Observation of single-particle gap opening and band-folding provides direct evidence of anisotropic particle-hole instability on the Fermi surface due to its unique topology. Kinematic overlap of the measured Fermi surface is observed with the 3\sqrt{3}x3\sqrt{3} cobalt charge-order Brillouin zone near x=1/3 but not at x=1/2 where insulating transition is actually observed. Unlike conventional density-waves, charge-stripes or band insulators, the on-set of the gap depends on the quasiparticle's quantum coherence which is found to occur well below the disorder-order symmetry breaking temperature of the crystal (the first known example of its kind).Comment: 4+ pages, 5 figure

    Anisotropic softening of collective charge modes in the vicinity of critical doping in a doped Mott insulator

    Momentum resolved inelastic resonant x-ray scattering is used to map the evolution of charge excitations over a large range of energies, momenta and doping levels in the electron doped Mott insulator class Nd2−x_{2-x}Cex_xCuO4_4. As the doping induced AFM-SC (antiferromagnetic-superconducting) transition is approached, we observe an anisotropic softening of collective charge modes over a large energy scale along the Gamma to (\pi,\pi)-direction, whereas the modes exhibit broadening (∼\sim 1 eV) with relatively little softening along Gamma to (\pi,0) with respect to the parent Mott insulator (x=0). Our study indicates a systematic collapse of the gap consistent with the scenario that the system dopes uniformly with electrons even though the softening of the modes involves an unusually large energy scale.Comment: 5 pages + 5 Figure

    Low-lying quasiparticle states and hidden collective charge instabilities in parent cobaltate superconductors (NaxCoO2)

    We report a state-of-the-art photoemission (ARPES) study of high quality single crystals of the NaxCoO2 series focusing on the fine details of the low-energy states. The Fermi velocity is found to be small (< 0.5 eV.A) and only weakly anisotropic over the Fermi surface at all dopings setting the size of the pair wavefunction to be on the order of 10-20 nanometers. In the low doping regime the exchange inter-layer splitting vanishes and two dimensional collective instabilities such as 120-type fluctuations become kinematically allowed. Our results suggest that the unusually small Fermi velocity and the unique symmetry of kinematic instabilities distinguish cobaltates from other unconventional oxide superconductors such as the cuprates or the ruthenates.Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys.     Designing a digital ecosystem for the new museum environment: the Virtual Museum of the Pacific

    The Virtual Museum of the Pacific is a social media platform for a digital ecosystem, which enables a variety of user communities to engage with the Pacific Collection of the Australian Museum. The success of the system depends on facilitating the development of culturally relevant folksonomies and encouraging a conversation between online communities. In this paper we explore the relationships between stakeholders, folksonomy and taxonomy, to reveal the design strategies which inform this digital ecosystem. Our analysis defines the scope for the social tagging component of our information model and discusses how users might interact with objects (in terms of their knowledge base) and also contribute to ongoing taxonomic definitions. Given its capacity to span both collection management and community access issues, we contend that the Virtual Museum of the Pacific is a significant model for online community interaction in the contemporary museum environment
