    On aspects of the measurement of non-linear turbulence processes using the cluster wave experiments

    International audienceThe ESA/NASA Cluster mission has four identical satellites and is due for launch at the end of 1995. It will provide a unique opportunity to study medium scale processes in the region from inside the magnetopause to the solar wind. The polar orbit will allow measurements in the cusp and along auroral field lines, both regions where turbulence is to be expected. Five of the eleven instruments on each payload form the Wave Experiment Consortium (WEC); EFW, STAFF, VMISPER, WBD and DWP. The WEC is capable of a wide variety of wave and turbulence measurements. This paper outlines these capabilities and describes the form of the data which will be collected. The paper gives a discussion of how the WEC data may be analysed so as to give an insight into the non-linear processes which occur in these regions of the space plasmas. There are many ways in which a plasma may be considered to behave in a non-linear manner. We concentrate on how the spatio-temporal turbulence in the plasma may be investigated so as to yield the energy spectrum with respect to both the frequency and wave number

    Factors determining students' global satisfaction with clerkships: an analysis of a two year students' ratings database

    WOS: 000260523900011PubMed ID: 17387625Clerkships would benefit from teachers' improved understanding of the didactic aspects of their task. The purpose of this study is to identify factors that determine the teaching quality of clerkships and to examine the predictive value of these factors for students' global satisfaction. Thus, results would be further reflected to clinical teachers' tasks. These factors could then be taken into account in future clinical teaching. In this paper, a medical faculty's 2 year data set of student feedback from a systematic programme evaluation project was used. A factor analysis was performed on 11,780 student questionnaires. Factor loads, and the Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the questionnaire and factors were calculated. In order to examine the contributions of the factors to the students' global satisfaction, the study included a multivariate stepwise regression analysis. The analysis revealed four factors, which together explained 60.24% of the variance: Structure & Process (44.66%); Time (5.8 %); Outcome (5.35%) and Input (4.39%). The Structure & Process factor was found to be the best predictor of students' global satisfaction (R-2 = .537). Our conclusion is that "efforts to improve clerkship quality should focus on students' learning processes and clerkship structure"

    The National Wellbeing Index in the isiXhosa translation: focus group discussions on how South Africans view the quality of their society

    publisher versionThe International Wellbeing Index covers two complementary measures, the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) and the National Wellbeing Index (NWI). The focus group study reported here tested the understanding of the NWI when translated into isiXhosa, a language spoken by 6 million South Africans, or 16% of the country’s population. A challenge for the NWI in measuring national well-being is the tendency for meaning to get ‘lost in translation’ in the wording of the instrument, owing to the disparities that exist between levels of living in developed and developing nations. The focussed discussions with native isiXhosa speakers conveyed the different shades of meaning associated with the six domains that make up the NWI. The isiXhosa keywords for the domains of social conditions, the natural environment, national security, and management of the country’s affairs (government) were readily understood, but discussants asked for further clarification of keywords for the domains relating to the economy and business. Conversations showed up the close link between personal and national well-being: discussants drew upon their personal and parochial life experiences along with their knowledge of current affairs to evaluate the nation’s quality of life. They described the social contract between citizens and their government to create a ‘caring society’ that promotes well-being across key domains of national life. Many of the reference standards used to evaluate national well-being were ones postulated to influence personal well-being (Michalos A.C, Social Indicators Research 16(4): 347–413 1985 ). The study also pointed to a potential problem for longitudinal studies if the bipolar satisfaction scale, formerly used to measure the International Wellbeing Index’s PWI and NWI, is changed to a unipolar one.
