    Epitaxial Thin Films of the Giant-Dielectric-Constant Material CaCu_3Ti_4O_{12} Grown by Pulsed-laser Deposition

    Pulsed-laser deposition has been used to grow epitaxial thin films of the giant-dielectric-constant material CaCu_3Ti_4O_{12} on LaAlO_3 and SrTiO_3 substrates with or without various conducting buffer layers. The latter include YBa_2Cu_3O_7, La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_{4+\delta} and LaNiO_3. Above 100K - 150K the thin films have a temperature independent dielectric constant as do single crystals. The value of the dielectric constant is of the order of 1500 over a wide temperature region, potentially making it a good candidate for many applications. The frequency dependence of its dielectric properties below 100K - 150K indicates an activated relaxation process.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

    Wheat was one of the first crops grown by early Utah settlers. It has since occupied an important place in the agriculture of the state. While wheat is almost the only crop grown successfully on dry-lands, it is also important under irrigation. Thirty per cent of the wheat acreage of Utah in 1929 was spring-sown, which produced 44 per cent of the state\u27s production. Eighty-seven per cent of the spring wheat acreage was grown under irrigation, this acreage producing 92.3 per cent of the total spring wheat crop. Thirty-eight per cent of Utah farmers were growing spring wheat in 1929; this wheat was grown in all ,counties of the state except one, the percentage of farmers growing this crop at that time ranging from less than 1 per cent in Washington and San Juan Counties to 64 per cent in Emery County; yet Emery County ranks about sixth in acreage and eighth in production

    Nearly one-third of the cropped acreage of Utah is devoted to cereals. Except for wheat, most of these crops are fed locally. In addition to this, an average of over a million bushels of corn, barley, and oats is shipped into the state each year to be used in various livestock and poultry industries. The purpose of this publication is to show the comparative amount of feed produced by the different crops--wheat, oats, barley, and corn--under similar conditions as determined for the specified four years by acre-yields obtained in various agricultural regions of the state. One should bear clearly in mind that its purpose is not to encourage all farmers to grow crops giving the highest feed value to the acre or to shift from one cereal to another, although this might be done to advantage if increased feed production is desired

    Study of the volume and spin collapse in orthoferrite LuFeO_3 using LDA+U

    Rare earth (R) orthoferrites RFeO_3 exhibit large volume transitions associated with a spin collapse. We present here ab initio calculations on LuFeO_3. We show that taking into account the strong correlation among the Fe-3d electrons is necessary. Indeed, with the LDA+U method in the Projector Augmented Wave (PAW), we are able to describe the isostructural phase transition at 50 GPa, as well as a volume discontinuity of 6.0% at the transition and the considerable reduction of the magnetic moment on the Fe ions. We further investigate the effect of the variation of U and J and find a linear dependence of the transition pressure on these parameters. We give an interpretation for the non-intuitive effect of J. This emphasizes the need for a correct determination of these parameters especially when the LDA+U is applied to systems (e.g in geophysical investigations) where the transition pressure is a priori unknown

    Inclusive electron-scattering cross sections have been measured for ^(56)Fe in the quasielastic region at electron energies between 0.9 and 4.3 GeV, at scattering angles of 15° and 85°. Longitudinal and transverse response functions at a q of 1.14 GeV/c have been extracted using a Rosenbluth separation. The experimental Coulomb sum has been obtained with aid of an extrapolation. The longitudinal response function, after correction for Coulomb distortion, is lower than quasifree-scattering-model predictions at the quasielastic peak and on the high-ω side

    Sorghums are not grown to any appreciable extent in Utah except in the Virgin River valley in the southwestern portion of the State. No experimental work on sorghum culture had been done prior to 1931 except on the dry land of Juab County near Nephi. Those early tests, discontinued after 1917, indicated that sorghums were poorly adapted to such conditions. Numerous improved varieties have been produced since that time, some of which are adapted to relatively short growing seasons. This bulletin will discuss the practicability of growing some of these varieties of sorghum in Utah and their economic value compared to leading crops now grown

    Effects of Training Intensity on Locomotor Performance in Individuals With Chronic Spinal Cord Injury: A Randomized Crossover Study

    Background. Many physical interventions can improve locomotor function in individuals with motor incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), although the training parameters that maximize recovery are not clear. Previous studies in individuals with other neurologic injuries suggest the intensity of locomotor training (LT) may positively influence walking outcomes. However, the effects of intensity during training of individuals with iSCI have not been tested. Objective. The purpose of this pilot, blinded-assessor randomized trial was to evaluate the effects of LT intensity on walking outcomes in individuals with iSCI. Methods. Using a crossover design, ambulatory participants with iSCI \u3e1 year duration performed either high- or low-intensity LT for ≤20 sessions over 4 to 6 weeks. Four weeks following completion, the training interventions were alternated. Targeted intensities focused on achieving specific ranges of heart rate (HR) or ratings of perceived exertion (RPE), with intensity manipulated by increasing speeds or applying loads. Results. Significantly greater increases in peak treadmill speeds (0.18 vs 0.02 m/s) and secondary measures of metabolic function and overground speed were observed following high- versus low-intensity training, with no effects of intervention order. Moderate to high correlations were observed between differences in walking speed or distances and differences in HRs or RPEs during high- versus low-intensity training. Conclusion. This pilot study provides the first evidence that the intensity of stepping practice may be an important determinant of LT outcomes in individuals with iSCI. Whether such training is feasible in larger patient populations and contributes to improved locomotor outcomes deserves further consideration
