Infrared Observations of novae in the SOFIA era
Classical novae inject chemically enriched gas and dust into the local
inter-stellar medium (ISM). Abundances in the ejecta can be deduced from
infrared (IR) forbidden line emission. IR spectroscopy can determine the
mineralogy of grains that grow in nova ejecta. We anticipate the impact that
NASA's new Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) will have
on future IR studies of novae.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of "Physics of Evolved Stars 2015 - A

The circumstellar dust of "Born-Again" stars
We describe the evolution of the carbon dust shells around Very Late Thermal
Pulse (VLTP) objects as seen at infrared wavelengths. This includes a 20-year
overview of the evolution of the dust around Sakurai's object (to which Olivier
made a seminal contribution) and FG Sge. VLTPs may occur during the endpoint of
as many as 25% of solar mass stars, and may therefore provide a glimpse of the
possible fate of the Sun.Comment: To appear in the proceedings of "Physics of Evolved Stars 2015 - A

Aerodynamic and acoustic effects of eliminating core swirl from a full scale 1.6 stage pressure ratio fan (QF-5A)
Fan QF-5A was a modification of fan QF-5 which had an additional core stator and adjusted support struts to turn the core exit flow from a 30 deg swirl to the axial direction. This modification was necessary to eliminate the impingement of the swirling core flow on the axial support pylon of the NASA-Lewis Quiet Fan Facility that caused aerodynamic, acoustic and structural problems with the original fan stage at fan speeds greater than 85 percent of design. The redesigned fan QF-5A did obtain the design bypass ratio with an increased core airflow suggesting that the flow problem was resolved. Acoustically, the redesigned stage showed a low frequency broadband noise reduction compared to the results for fan QF-5 at similar operating conditions
Looking for Design in Materials Design
Despite great advances in computation, materials design is still science
fiction. The construction of structure-property relations on the quantum scale
will turn computational empiricism into true design.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur
Anatomy of a merger : an examination of factors influencing REIT consolidation
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 1998.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-89).An investigation was made into the factors influencing the recent merger and acquisition activity in the Real Estate Investment Trust ("REIT") industry. Several financial factors influencing consolidation activity were reviewed in theory including the desire to lower the cost of capital to the REIT, to take advantage of economies of scale, and to increase the liquidity of the REIT stock. Strategic factors including vertical and horizontal integration, the desire to influence market rents, and increasing management talent were also noted. The risks of integrating two organizations and the legal and tax implications of REIT mergers were also investigated as to their influence on current merger activity. Observations of three office REIT mergers were made for purposes of comparison with the noted theoretical factors. Although financial factors were the underlying motivation of these mergers, strategic factors including horizontal integration played a visible role in each case. The theoretical and practical observations were then used to create a framework for identifying the presence of acquirers and targets in the office/industrial sector of the REIT industry. Finally, strategic factors were used in combination with identified acquirers and targets in order to attempt to predict logical merger combinations in the future.by L. Jay Timon and Daniel E. The Stellar Content of Obscured Galactic Giant H II Regions III.: W31
We present near infrared (J, H, and K) photometry and moderate resolution
(lambda/Deltalambda = 3000) K-band spectroscopy of the embedded stellar cluster
in the giant H II region W31. Four of the brightest five cluster members are
early O--type stars based on their spectra. We derive a spectro--photometric
distance for W31 of 3.4 +/- 0.3 kpc using these new spectral types and infrared
photometry. The brightest cluster source at K is a red object which lies in the
region of the J - H vs. H - K color--color plot inhabited by stars with excess
emission in the K-band. This point source has an H plus K-band spectrum which
shows no photospheric features, which we interpret as being the result of
veiling by local dust emission. Strong Brackett series emission and permitted
FeII emission are detected in this source; the latter feature is suggestive of
a dense inflow or outflow. The near infrared position of this red source is
consistent with the position of a 5 GHz thermal radio source seen in previous
high angular resolution VLA images. We also identify several other K-band
sources containing excess emission with compact radio sources. These objects
may represent stars in the W31 cluster still embedded in their birth cocoons.Comment: LaTeX2e/aastex, 29 pages including 9 figures, 3 table
On the density-potential mapping in time-dependent density functional theory
The key questions of uniqueness and existence in time-dependent density
functional theory are usually formulated only for potentials and densities that
are analytic in time. Simple examples, standard in quantum mechanics, lead
however to non-analyticities. We reformulate these questions in terms of a
non-linear Schr\"odinger equation with a potential that depends non-locally on
the wavefunction.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
The Neon Abundance in the Ejecta of QU Vul From Late-Epoch IR Spectra
We present ground-based SpectroCam-10 mid-infrared, MMT optical, and Spitzer
Space Telescope IRS mid-infrared spectra taken 7.62, 18.75, and 19.38 years
respectively after the outburst of the old classical nova QU Vulpeculae (Nova
Vul 1984 #2). The spectra of the ejecta are dominated by forbidden line
emission from neon and oxygen. Our analysis shows that neon was, at the first
and last epochs respectively, more than 76 and 168 times overabundant by number
with respect to hydrogen compared to the solar value. These high lower limits
to the neon abundance confirm that QU Vul involved a thermonuclear runaway on
an ONeMg white dwarf and approach the yields predicted by models of the
nucleosynthesis in such events.Comment: ApJ 2007 accepted, 18 pages, including 5 figures, 1 tabl
The first 8-13 micron spectra of globular cluster red giants: circumstellar silicate dust grains in 47 Tucanae (NGC 104)
We present 8-13 micron spectra of eight red giants in the globular cluster 47
Tucanae (NGC 104), obtained at the European Southern Observatory 3.6m
telescope. These are the first mid-infrared spectra of metal-poor, low-mass
stars. The spectrum of at least one of these, namely the extremely red,
large-amplitude variable V1, shows direct evidence of circumstellar grains made
of amorphous silicate.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 5 page
