Manipulation and the causal Markov condition
This paper explores the relationship between a manipulability conception of causation and the causal Markov condition (CM). We argue that violations of CM also violate widely shared expectationsâimplicit in the manipulability conceptionâhaving to do with the absence of spontaneous correlations. They also violate expectations concerning the connection between independence or dependence relationships in the presence and absence of interventions
Hats and tarbooshes: identity, cosmopolitanism, and violence in 1920s Alexandria
In May of 1921 Alexandria was consumed by demonstrations against the British-backed Adly Cabinet. In a matter of days these protests developed into violence which targeted people based on perceived communal affiliation. In total, 88 people were killed and 238 were wounded. Through a detailed examination of this communal and political violence, a moment that has largely be left out of the Egyptian historical narrative, I provide a greater understanding of how the complex dynamics of identity and power operated in Alexandrian society in this crucial period in the formation of the narrative of Egyptian identity. Utilizing a variety of primary and secondary sources, I use this moment to complicate both the romantic cosmopolitan narrative which has dominated much of Alexandrian historiography and the anti-colonialist narrative of 1950s nationalism. The cosmopolitan narrative is flawed because it ignores or celebrates the inherently exploitative colonial structure of early twentieth century Egypt and, as I show using court records, relies on simplistic understandings of identity in Alexandrian society. Many anti-colonial narratives rely on similarly simplistic understandings of identity. Ultimately the goal of this thesis is to use a specific incident to explore and complicate the dominant narratives of the historiography of Alexandria
First Meeting of the joint IOC-ICES Study Group on Nutrient Standards (SGONS)
A meeting of the joint IOC-ICES Study Group on Nutrient Standards (SGONS) was held in Paris, France on 23-24 March 2010. It focused on the ongoing activities of the SGONS and plans for extended international collaborations to establish global comparability of the nutrient data from the worldâs ocean. Thirty two scientists and experts from 11 countries and 2 delegates from IOC attended the meeting. The discussions followed the Terms of References of SGONS established in July 2009. Development of the reference materials for nutrients in seawater (RMNS) were also discussed in collaboration with the producers. The background and history of SGONS and an international nutrients scale system INSS and the progress with the production of RMNS materials and their current availability were reported. The production of RMNS and the latest status of the RMNS production facility, current status on the certification of RMNS for nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate at the National Metrology Institute of Japan were also reported. The revised nutrients analysis manual which is being undertaken by the SGONS hopefully would be completed by 1 August 2010, and it will be published on line at the Go-Ship website. Results obtained with RMNS solutions used on the P6 reoccupation cruise in 2009-2010 by SIO (Scripps Institute of Oceanography, USA) showed that considerable improvement could be made in the internal comparability of the data by referencing it to the RMNS results and related good comparability with the previous P6 cruise in 2003 by JAMSTEC when RMNS were also used. The meeting strongly endorsed the idea of a ship board workshop in 2013/14 during which major groups would carry out a full inter-comparison of all procedures including analytical methods on board a research ship. The global stability test of RMNS by ten core laboratories of SGONS which started in 2009 will continue for more two years. It also was agreed to set up an international steering committee to plan the next inter-laboratory comparison study which will extend the study to about 70 laboratories working globally on deep sea hydrography. This will happen in early 2011. Future arrangements were considered for the collection of more batches of seawater for the preparation of RMNS waters suitable for use in all major water masses, and a list of candidate cruises in 2010/2011 was prepared. The related point of the extension of the use of RMNS for work in shelf sea water was also discussed, this followed on from discussions at the ICES Marine Chemistry Working Group (MCWG) meeting in 2010. The ICES MCWG considered that the use of suitable RMNS solutions would be valuable for improving the inter comparability of shelf sea data and be a valuable complement to work with the existing QUASIMEME proficiency testing scheme
Anatomy of a merger : an examination of factors influencing REIT consolidation
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 1998.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 86-89).An investigation was made into the factors influencing the recent merger and acquisition activity in the Real Estate Investment Trust ("REIT") industry. Several financial factors influencing consolidation activity were reviewed in theory including the desire to lower the cost of capital to the REIT, to take advantage of economies of scale, and to increase the liquidity of the REIT stock. Strategic factors including vertical and horizontal integration, the desire to influence market rents, and increasing management talent were also noted. The risks of integrating two organizations and the legal and tax implications of REIT mergers were also investigated as to their influence on current merger activity. Observations of three office REIT mergers were made for purposes of comparison with the noted theoretical factors. Although financial factors were the underlying motivation of these mergers, strategic factors including horizontal integration played a visible role in each case. The theoretical and practical observations were then used to create a framework for identifying the presence of acquirers and targets in the office/industrial sector of the REIT industry. Finally, strategic factors were used in combination with identified acquirers and targets in order to attempt to predict logical merger combinations in the future.by L. Jay Timon and Daniel E. Effects of temperature and carbon source on the isotopic fractionations associated with O_2 respiration for ^(17)O/^(16)O and ^(18)O/^(16)O ratios in E. coli
^(18)O/^(16)O and ^(17)O/^(16)O ratios of atmospheric and dissolved oceanic O_2 are used as biogeochemical tracers of photosynthesis and respiration. Critical to this approach is a quantitative understanding of the isotopic fractionations associated with production, consumption, and transport of O_2 in the ocean both at the surface and at depth. We made measurements of isotopic fractionations associated with O_2 respiration by E. coli. Our study included wild-type strains and mutants with only a single respiratory O_2 reductase in their electron transport chains (either a heme-copper oxygen reductase or a bd oxygen reductase). We tested two common assumptions made in interpretations of O_2 isotope variations and in isotope-enabled models of the O_2 cycle: (i) laboratory-measured respiratory ^(18)O/^(16)O isotopic fractionation factors (^(18)α) of microorganisms are independent of environmental and experimental conditions including temperature, carbon source, and growth rate; And (ii) the respiratory âmass lawâ exponent, Ξ, between ^(18)O/^(16)O and ^(17)O/^(16)O, ^(17)αâŻ=âŻ(^(18)α)^Ξ, is universal for aerobic respiration. Results demonstrated that experimental temperatures have an effect on both ^(18)α and Ξ for aerobic respiration. Specifically, lowering temperatures from 37 to 15âŻÂ°C decreased the absolute magnitude of ^(18)α by 0.0025 (2.5â°), and caused the mass law slope to decrease by 0.005. We propose a possible biochemical basis for these variations using a model of O_2 reduction that incorporates two isotopically discriminating steps: the reversible binding and unbinding of O_2 to a terminal reductase, and the irreversible reduction of that O_2 to water. Finally, we cast our results in a one-dimensional isopycnal reaction-advection-diffusion model, which demonstrates that enigmatic ÎŽ^(18)O and Î^(17)O variations of dissolved O_2 in the dark ocean can be understood by invoking the observed temperature dependence of these isotope effects

VCU is a large, public, urban research university situated in the middle of a capital city. Its faculty, staff, student body, alumni, and the surrounding community are remarkably diverse as are the academic offerings. It is, and should be viewed as, the intellectual and cultural engine of the region. Our project proposes the creation of a large-scale, high-profile speaker series designed to highlight emerging trends and provide students, faculty, staff, alumni and the Richmond community with a forum for conversation. The speaker series will cover topics that are critically engaging, have national relevance, and introduce ideas that propel the next generation of leaders. In addition to a large speaking engagement, the speaker series will also incorporate other activities to cultivate interactions and build relationships such as classroom lectures, book signings, and a dinner through the development office. The speaker series will host at least one speaker annually, with the addition of a second speaker as the event builds momentum. At least one of the lectures will occur at the beginning of the traditional academic semester, allowing for the greatest opportunity for participation across VCU and Richmond. Internal support from VCU students, faculty, staff, and colleges will ensure that the project is connected to the mission, vision, goals, and pursuits of VCU. A speaker series committee will help sustain and coordinate efforts across the university and community. Committee members will include stakeholders that require buy-in and cooperation for activities that complement the speaker series (e.g., other lectures, panel discussions, classroom activities). A survey will be used to gain insights into topics and speakers of interest. The committee will review the survey responses in order to make informed decisions during the planning process. The ongoing presence of hosting influential speakers will allow VCU to emerge into the national spotlight as thought-leaders. This speaker series will serve many purposes. First, the series will serve to inspire VCU students, faculty, staff, and the Richmond. Through frank and open conversations attendees will be exposed to new concepts and ideas. Second, the series will unite the diverse groups that make up VCU and the Richmond community. The lecture series will expose attendees to new ideas and open doors for possible opportunities for collaboration through classroom and community engagement activities related to the topics discussed. Third, the series will serve as a cultural conduit, solidly connecting the VCU and Richmond communities around engaging ideas of importance. Opening a new market-place of ideas will ensure that the students of VCU interact with new information in exciting and transformative ways
Chinaâs Sudan engagement: changing Northern and Southern political trajectories in peace and war
China has developed a more consequential role in Sudan over the past two decades, during which it has become bound up in the combination of enduring violent internal instability and protracted external adversity that has characterized the politics of the central state since the 1989 Islamist revolution. Two inter-related political trajectories of Chinaâs Sudan engagement are examined here. The first concerns Beijingâs relations with the ruling National Congress party in incorporating China into its domestic politics and foreign relations amidst war in Darfur, to which Beijing has responded through a more engaged political role. The second confronts the practical limitations of Chinaâs sovereignty doctrine and exclusive reliance upon relations with the central state. Following the peace agreement of 2005 that ended the NorthâSouth war, and motivated by political imperatives linked to investment protection concerns, China has developed new relations with the semi-autonomous Government of Southern Sudan, thus seeking to position itself to navigate Sudanâs uncertain political future
Perianal Pigmented Variant of Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a low-to-intermediate grade cutaneous sarcoma with reported at 3 per 1,000,000 individuals. It is a locally aggressive tumor which originates in the dermis and invades deeper structures. Up to 90% of cases of DFSP are associated with a translocation between chromosomes 17 and 22. These tumors have a high risk of local recurrence but very rarely exhibit metastatic spread. Several histologic variants exist, including fibrosarcomatous DFSP, and in this case, pigmented DSFP. Pigmented dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, otherwise also known as a Bednar tumor, is a rare variant of DFSP first described in 1956 which accounts for less than 5% of all DSFP cases. It is distinguished by the presence of melanin containing dendritic cells within the tumor. Histologically, tumor cells are arranged in compact spindle shaped bundles. These tumors may be derived from neuroectodermal cells although no consensus has been reached. DSFP occurs equally in men and women and most commonly occurs in young to middle aged adults. These cutaneous sarcomas typically present on the trunk, back and shoulders as a slow-growing mass or plaque that may be hyperpigmented.
