SRB Environment Evaluation and Analysis. Volume 2: RSRB Joint Filling Test/Analysis Improvements
Following the Challenger accident a very comprehensive solid rocket booster (SRB) redesign program was initiated. One objective of the program was to develop expertise at NASA/MSFC in the techniques for analyzing the flow of hot gases in the SRB joints. Several test programs were undertaken to provide a data base of joint performance with manufactured defects in the joints to allow hot gases to fill the joints. This data base was used also to develop the analytical techniques. Some of the test programs were Joint Environment Simulator (JES), Nozzle Joint Environment Simulator (NJES), Transient Pressure Test Article (TPTA), and Seventy-Pound Charge (SPC). In 1988 the TPTA test hardware was moved from the Utah site to MSFC and several RSRM tests were scheduled, to be followed by tests for the ASRM program. REMTECH Inc. supported these activities with pretest estimates of the flow conditions in the test joints, and post-test analysis and evaluation of the measurements. During this support REMTECH identified deficiencies in the gas-measurement instrumentation that existed in the TPTA hardware, made recommendations for its replacement, and identified improvements to the analytical tools used in the test support. Only one test was completed under the TPTA RSRM test program, and those scheduled for the ASRM were rescheduled to a time after the expiration of this contract. The attention of this effort was directed toward improvements in the analytical techniques in preparation for when the ASRM program begins
Balmer-Dominated Shocks Exclude Hot Progenitors for Many Type Ia Supernovae
The evolutionary mechanism underlying Type Ia supernova explosions remains
unknown. Recent efforts to constrain progenitor models based on the influence
that their high energy emission would have on the interstellar medium (ISM) of
galaxies have proven successful. For individual remnants, Balmer-dominated
shocks reveal the ionization state of hydrogen in the immediately surrounding
gas. Here we report deep upper limits on the temperature and luminosity of the
progenitors of four Type Ia remnants with associated Balmer filaments: SN 1006,
0509-67.5, 0519-69.0, and DEM L71. For SN 1006, existing observations of helium
line emission in the diffuse emission ahead of the shock provide an additional
constraint on the helium ionization state in the vicinity of the remnant. Using
the photoionization code Cloudy, we show that these constraints exclude any
hot, luminous progenitor for SN 1006, including stably hydrogen or helium
nuclear-burning white dwarfs, as well as any Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf
accreting matter at yr via a disk. For
0509-67.5, the Balmer emission alone rules out any such white dwarf accreting
yr. For 0519-69.0 and DEM L71, the inferred
ambient ionization state of hydrogen is only weakly in tension with a recently
hot, luminous progenitor, and cannot be distinguished from e.g., a relatively
higher local Lyman continuum background, without additional line measurements.
Future deep spectroscopic observations will resolve this ambiguity, and can
either detect the influence of any luminous progenitor or rule out the same for

No hot and luminous progenitor for Tycho's supernova
Type Ia supernovae have proven vital to our understanding of cosmology, both
as standard candles and for their role in galactic chemical evolution; however,
their origin remains uncertain. The canonical accretion model implies a hot and
luminous progenitor which would ionize the surrounding gas out to a radius of
10--100 parsecs for 100,000 years after the explosion. Here we
report stringent upper limits on the temperature and luminosity of the
progenitor of Tycho's supernova (SN 1572), determined using the remnant itself
as a probe of its environment. Hot, luminous progenitors that would have
produced a greater hydrogen ionization fraction than that measured at the
radius of the present remnant (3 parsecs) can thus be excluded. This
conclusively rules out steadily nuclear-burning white dwarfs (supersoft X-ray
sources), as well as disk emission from a Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf
accreting yr (recurrent novae). The lack of a
surrounding Str\"omgren sphere is consistent with the merger of a double white
dwarf binary, although other more exotic scenarios may be possible.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures, including supplementary information. Original

From a financial point of view, investment; its use, control and returns, are the chief objects in every manufacturing business, and all activity should be with this clearly in mind. Looked at in fact, there are just three things, primarily, that tie money up in a manufacturing business, viz: Plant Inventory Accounts Receivable. Plant investment is fixed, or permanent; Inventory and Accounts Receivable are flexible and in these two latter lies the danger to successful administration, unless it is governed by a policy that will keep them well within the confines of the capital employed or available. It is this very flexibility that piles up inventory instead of cash for dividends, and grants credits that cause borrowings to be made, often beyond the earning power of a business. Over-expansion of credits and over-borrowing being the cause of 90% of all industrial ills, the problem resolves itself into a policy that will relate capital and turn-over in such a way as to avoid this danger

Launch vehicle effluent measurements during the August 20, 1977, Titan 3 launch at Air Force Eastern Test Range
Airborne effluent measurements within the launch cloud and visible and infrared measurements of cloud physical behavior are discussed. Airborne effluent measurements include concentrations of HCl, Cl2, NO, NOX, and particulates as a function of time during each sampling pass through the exhaust cloud. The particle size distribution was measured for each pass through the cloud. Mass concentration as a function of particle diameter was measured over the size range of 0.05- to 25 micron diameter, and particle number density was measured as a function of diameter over a size range of 0.5 to 7.5 micron. Effluent concentrations in the cloud ranged from about 30 ppm several minutes after launch to about 1 to 2 ppm at 100 minutes. Maximum Cl2 concentrations were about 40 to 55 ppb and by 20 minutes were less than 1.0 ppb. A tabulated listing of the airborne data is given in the appendix. Usable cloud imaging data were limited to the first 16 minutes after launch

An aircraft was selected and instrumented to measure effluents emitted from large solid propellant rockets during launch activities. The considerations involved in aircraft selection, sampling probes, and instrumentation are discussed with respect to obtaining valid airborne measurements. Discussions of the data acquisition system used, the instrument power system, and operational sampling procedures are included. Representative measurements obtained from an actual rocket launch monitoring activity are also presented
