Damage analysis of bridge structures using vibrational techniques
Much research is currently centred on the detection of damage in structures using vibrational data. The work presented here examined several areas of interest in support of a practical technique for identifying and locating damage within bridge structures using apparent changes in their vibrational response to known excitation. The proposed goals of such a technique included the need for the measurement system to be operated on site by a minimum number of staff and that the procedure should be as non-invasive to the bridge traffic-flow as possible. Initially the research investigated changes in the vibrational bending characteristics of two series of large-scale model bridge-beams in the laboratory and these included ordinary-reinforced and post-tensioned, prestressed designs. Each beam was progressively damaged at predetermined positions and its vibrational response to impact excitation was analysed. For the load-regime utilised the results suggested that the infuced damage manifested itself as a function of the span of a beam rather than a localised area. A power-law relating apparent damage with the applied loading and prestress levels was then proposed, together with a qualitative vibrational measure of structural damage. In parallel with the laboratory experiments a series of tests were undertaken at the sites of a number of highway bridges. The bridges selected had differing types of construction and geometric design including composite-concrete, concrete slab-and-beam, concrete-slab with supporting steel-troughing constructions together with regular-rectangular, skewed and heavily-skewed geometries. Initial investigations were made of the feasibility and reliability of various methods of structure excitation including traffic and impulse methods. It was found that localised impact using a sledge-hammer was ideal for the purposes of this work and that a cartridge `bolt-gun' could be used in some specific cases

The use of repeated blood pressure measures for cardiovascular risk prediction: a comparison of statistical models in the ARIC study.
Many prediction models have been developed for the risk assessment and the prevention of cardiovascular disease in primary care. Recent efforts have focused on improving the accuracy of these prediction models by adding novel biomarkers to a common set of baseline risk predictors. Few have considered incorporating repeated measures of the common risk predictors. Through application to the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study and simulations, we compare models that use simple summary measures of the repeat information on systolic blood pressure, such as (i) baseline only; (ii) last observation carried forward; and (iii) cumulative mean, against more complex methods that model the repeat information using (iv) ordinary regression calibration; (v) risk-set regression calibration; and (vi) joint longitudinal and survival models. In comparison with the baseline-only model, we observed modest improvements in discrimination and calibration using the cumulative mean of systolic blood pressure, but little further improvement from any of the complex methods. © 2016 The Authors. Disk Diffusion Propagation Model for the Outburst of XTE J1118+480
We present a linear diffusion model for the evolution of the double-peaked
outburst in the transient source XTEJ1118+480. The model treats the two
outbursts as episodic mass deposition at the outer radius of the disk followed
by evolution of disk structure according to a diffusion process. We demonstrate
that light curves with fast-rise, exponential decay profile are a general
consequence of the diffusion process. Deconvolution of the light curve proves
to be feasible and gives an input function specifying mass deposition at the
outer disk edge as well as the total mass of the disk, both as functions of
time. The derived evolution of total disk mass can be correlated with the
observed evolution of the ~0.1 Hz QPO in the source reported in Wood et al.

A Post-AGB Star in the Small Magellanic Cloud Observed with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph
We have observed an evolved star with a rare combination of spectral
features, MSX SMC 029, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) using the
low-resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space
Telescope. A cool dust continuum dominates the spectrum of MSX SMC 029. The
spectrum also shows both emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
and absorption at 13.7 micron from C2H2, a juxtaposition seen in only two other
sources, AFGL 2688 and IRAS 13416-6243, both post-asymptotic giant branch (AGB)
objects. As in these sources, the PAH spectrum has the unusual trait that the
peak emission in the 7-9 micron complex lies beyond 8.0 micron. In addition,
the 8.6 micron feature has an intensity as strong as the C-C modes which
normally peak between 7.7 and 7.9 micron. The relative flux of the feature at
11.3 micron to that at 8 micron suggests that the PAHs in MSX SMC 029 either
have a low ionization fraction or are largely unprocessed. The 13-16 micron
wavelength region shows strong absorption features similar to those observed in
the post-AGB objects AFGL 618 and SMP LMC 11. This broad absorption may arise
from the same molecules which have been identified in those sources: C2H2,
C4H2, HC3N, and C6H6. The similarities between MSX SMC 029, AFGL 2688, and AFGL
618 lead us to conclude that MSX SMC 029 has evolved off the AGB in only the
past few hundred years, making it the third post-AGB object identified in the

Quantum correlations in a noisy neutron interferometer
We investigate quantum coherences in the presence of noise by entangling the
spin and path degrees of freedom of the output neutron beam from a noisy
three-blade perfect crystal neutron interferometer. We find that in the
presence of dephasing noise on the path degree of freedom the entanglement of
the output state reduces to zero, however the quantum discord remains non-zero
for all noise values. Hence even in the presence of strong phase noise
non-classical correlations persist between the spin and path of the neutron
beam. This indicates that measurements performed on the spin of the neutron
beam will induce a disturbance on the path state. We calculate the effect of
the spin measurement by observing the changes in the observed contrast of the
interferometer for an output beam post-selected on a given spin state. In doing
so we demonstrate that these measurements allow us to implement a quantum
eraser, and a which-way measurement of the path taken by the neutron through
the interferometer. While strong phase noise removes the quantum eraser, the
spin-filtered which-way measurement is robust to phase noise. We experimentally
demonstrate this disturbance by comparing the contrasts of the output beam with
and without spin measurements of three neutron interferometers with varying
noise strengths. This demonstrates that even in the presence of noise that
suppresses path coherence and spin-path entanglement, a neutron interferometer

2-D Radiative Transfer in Protostellar Envelopes: I. Effects of Geometry on Class I Sources
We present 2-D radiation transfer models of Class I Protostars and show the
effect of including more realistic geometries on the resulting spectral energy
distributions and images. We begin with a rotationally flattened infalling
envelope as our comparison model, and add a flared disk and bipolar cavity. The
disk affects the spectral energy distribution most strongly at edge-on
inclinations, causing a broad dip at about 10 um (independent of the silicate
feature) due to high extinction and low scattering albedo in this wavelength
region. The bipolar cavities allow more direct stellar+disk radiation to emerge
into polar directions, and more scattering radiation to emerge into all
directions. The wavelength-integrated flux, often interpreted as luminosity,
varies with viewing angle, with pole-on viewing angles seeing 2-4 times as much
flux as edge-on, depending on geometry. Thus, observational estimates of
luminosity should take into account the inclination of a source. The envelopes
with cavities are significantly bluer in near-IR and mid-IR color-color plots
than those without cavities. Using 1-D models to interpret Class I sources with
bipolar cavities would lead to an underestimate of envelope mass and an
overestimate of the implied evolutionary state. We compute images at near-,
mid-, and far-IR wavelengths. We find that the mid-IR colors and images are
sensitive to scattering albedo, and that the flared disk shadows the midplane
on large size scales at all wavelengths plotted. Finally, our models produce
polarization spectra which can be used to diagnose dust properties, such as
albedo variations due to grain growth. Our results of polarization across the
3.1 um ice feature agree well with observations for ice mantles covering 5% of

Utility of the new Movement Disorder Society clinical diagnostic criteria for Parkinson's disease applied retrospectively in a large cohort study of recent onset cases
Objective:
To examine the utility of the new Movement Disorder Society (MDS) diagnostic criteria in a large cohort of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients.
Methods:
Recently diagnosed (<3.5 years) PD cases fulfilling United Kingdom (UK) brain bank criteria in Tracking Parkinson's, a UK multicenter prospective natural history study were assessed by retrospective application of the MDS criteria.
Results:
In 2000 cases, 1835 (91.7%) met MDS criteria for PD, either clinically established (n = 1261, 63.1%) or clinically probable (n = 574, 28.7%), leaving 165 (8.3%) not fulfilling criteria. Clinically established cases were significantly more likely to have limb rest tremor (89.3%), a good l-dopa response (79.5%), and olfactory loss (71.1%), than clinically probable cases (60.6%, 44.4%, and 34.5% respectively), but differences between probable PD and ânot PDâ cases were less evident. In cases not fulfilling criteria, the mean MDS UPDRS3 score (25.1, SD 13.2) was significantly higher than in probable PD (22.3, SD 12.7, p = 0.016) but not established PD (22.9, SD 12.0, p = 0.066). The l-dopa equivalent daily dose of 341 mg (SD 261) in non-PD cases was significantly higher than in probable PD (250 mg, SD 214, p < 0.001) and established PD (308 mg, SD 199, p = 0.025). After 30 months' follow-up, 89.5% of clinically established cases at baseline remained as PD (established/probable), and 86.9% of those categorized as clinically probable at baseline remained as PD (established/probable). Cases not fulfilling PD criteria had more severe parkinsonism, in particular relating to postural instability, gait problems, and cognitive impairment.
Conclusion:
Over 90% of cases clinically diagnosed as early PD fulfilled the MDS criteria for PD. Those not fulfilling criteria may have an atypical parkinsonian disorder or secondary parkinsonism that is not correctly identified by the UK Brain Bank criteria, but possibly by the new criteria
