Benzylammonium hepta-noate-hepta-noic acid (1/1).
The title salt, C7H10N(+)·C7H13O2(-)·C7H14O2, is an unusual 2:1 stoichiometric combination of two carb-oxy-lic acid mol-ecules and one amine. Although there are crystal structures of a number of 1:1 complexes reported in the literature, 2:1 acid amine complexes are rather uncommon. In this case, a proton is transferred between one acid mol-ecule and the amine to give an acid anion and an ammonium cation whilst the other carb-oxy-lic acid remains protonated. The species inter-act strongly via electrostatic forces and hydrogen bonds. In addition we note that the N atom of the ammonium group makes four close contacts to surrounding O atoms. Three of these are hydrogen bonds with neighbouring acid anions while the fourth does not involve a hydrogen atom but is directed towards the carbonyl O atom of the protonated acid. Each of the acid anion O atoms accepts two hydrogen bonds from adjacent N atoms. There is also evidence of short C-H⋯O contacts. There is disorder (occupancy ratio 0.51:0.49) in the alkyl chain of one of the carb-oxy-lic acid mol-ecules.This work was supported by the Department of Chemistry, the BP Institute and the Oppenheimer Trust
Using Neutron Reflectometry to Discern the Structure of Fibrinogen Adsorption at the Stainless Steel/Aqueous Interface.
Neutron reflectometry has been successfully used to study adsorption on a stainless steel surface by means of depositing a thin steel film on silicon. The film was characterized using XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), TOF-SIMS (time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry), and GIXRD (grazing incidence X-ray diffraction), demonstrating the retention both of the austenitic phase and of the required composition for 316L stainless steel. The adsorption of fibrinogen from a physiologically-relevant solution onto the steel surface was studied using neutron reflectometry and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) and compared to that on a deposited chromium oxide surface. It was found that the protein forms an irreversibly bound layer at low concentrations, with maximum protein concentration a distance of around 20 Ã… from the surface. Evidence for a further diffuse reversibly-bound layer forming at higher concentrations was also observed. Both the structure of the layer revealed by the neutron reflectometry data and the high water retention predicted by the QCM data suggest that there is a significant extent of protein unfolding upon adsorption. A lower extent of adsorption was seen on the chromium surfaces, although the adsorbed layer structures were similar, suggesting comparable adsorption mechanisms.M.H.W. is grateful to the Oppenheimer Trust for funding.This is the author accepted manuscript. Comparative Adsorption of Saturated and Unsaturated Fatty Acids at the Iron Oxide/Oil Interface.
A detailed comparison of the adsorption behavior of long straight chain saturated and unsaturated fatty acids at the iron oxide/oil interface has been considered using a combination of surface study techniques. Both depletion isotherms and polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR) show that the extent of adsorption decreases as the number of double bonds in the alkyl chains increases. Sum frequency generation spectroscopic measurements demonstrate that there is also an increase in chain disorder within the adsorbed layer as the unsaturation increases. However, for the unsaturated analogues, a decrease in peak intensity is seen for the double bond peak upon heating, which is thought to arise from isomerization in the surface-bound layer. The PNR study of oleic acid adsorption indicates chemisorbed monolayer adsorption, with a further diffuse reversible adsorbed layer formed at higher concentrations.Mary Wood is grateful for funding from the Oppenheimer Trust. Bovine Serum Albumin and Fibrinogen Adsorption at the 316L Stainless Steel/Aqueous Interface.
The binding of bovine serum albumin (BSA) to a 316L stainless steel surface from a buffer solution has been characterized using neutron reflectometry and quartz crystal microbalance measurements; coverage at all concentrations up to a near-physiological concentration was found to be relatively low (<20%); the protein followed a two-step isotherm adsorption model type and the overall thickness at the higher concentrations (around 80 Ã…) suggested possible multilayering and/or protein unfolding. As it has been postulated that BSA may inhibit the further adsorption of another blood plasma protein-fibrinogen-the effects of preadsorbing BSA on fibrinogen adsorption were examined, first by prior physisorption of BSA to the stainless steel surface and second by pretreating the stainless steel with a layer of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to render it more hydrophobic. Although the preadsorption of BSA to an untreated stainless steel surface did slightly decrease the amount of fibrinogen adsorbed initially, it had no inhibiting effect if a solution containing solely fibrinogen subsequently flowed through. In contrast, the SDS-treated surface yielded both an increased BSA adsorption and consistently decreased fibrinogen adsorption
Has the phasing out of stavudine in accordance with changes in WHO guidelines led to a decrease in single-drug substitutions in first-line antiretroviral therapy for HIV in sub-Saharan Africa?

AIDS. 2017 January 02; 31(1): 147–157. doi:10.1097/QAD.0000000000001307OBJECTIVE: We assessed the relationship between phasing out stavudine in first-line antiretroviral therapy (ART) in accordance with WHO 2010 policy and single-drug substitutions (SDS) (substituting the nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor in first-line ART) in sub-Saharan Africa.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort analysis (International epidemiological Databases to Evaluate AIDS-Multiregional) including ART-naive, HIV-infected patients aged at least 16 years, initiating ART between January 2005 and December 2012. Before April 2010 (July 2007 in Zambia) national guidelines called for patients to initiate stavudine-based or zidovudine-based regimen, whereas thereafter tenofovir or zidovudine replaced stavudine in first-line ART.
METHODS: We evaluated the frequency of stavudine use and SDS by calendar year 2004-2014. Competing risk regression was used to assess the association between nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor use and SDS in the first 24 months on ART.
RESULTS: In all, 33 441 (8.9%; 95% confience interval 8.7-8.9%) SDS occurred among 377 656 patients in the first 24 months on ART, close to 40% of which were amongst patients on stavudine. The decrease in SDS corresponded with the phasing out of stavudine. Competing risks regression models showed that patients on tenofovir were 20-95% less likely to require a SDS than patients on stavudine, whereas patients on zidovudine had a 75-85% decrease in the hazards of SDS when compared to stavudine.
CONCLUSION: The decline in SDS in the first 24 months on treatment appears to be associated with phasing out stavudine for zidovudine or tenofovir in first-line ART in our study. Further efforts to decrease the cost of tenofovir and zidovudine for use in this setting is warranted to substitute all patients still receiving stavudine

Adsorption of 4-n-Nonylphenol, Carvacrol, and Ethanol onto Iron Oxide from Nonaqueous Hydrocarbon Solvents.
The adsorption of 4-n-nonylphenol (4NP), carvacrol, and ethanol onto the surface of iron oxide from nonaqueous solutions is presented. It is found that adsorption of 4NP from alkanes is strong and proceeds to monolayer formation, where the molecules are essentially "upright". However, at high relative concentrations, ethanol successfully out-competes 4NP for the iron oxide surface. Estimates of the enthalpy and entropy of binding of 4NP were found to be exothermic and entropically disfavored. Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy data indicate some evidence of binding through a phenolate anion, despite the nonpolar, nonaqueous solvent. Carvacrol is also found to adsorb as a monolayer where the molecules are lying "flat". The adsorption of ethanol onto iron oxide from dodecane was investigated through the use of quantitative NMR, which is a convenient analytical technique for measuring adsorption isotherms. It was concluded that ethanol does not form adsorbed monolayers on the surface. Instead, it partitions onto the surface as a surface-enhanced local phase separation related to its poor solubility in alkane solvents.B

PhyloMarker—A Tool for Mining Phylogenetic Markers Through Genome Comparison: Application of the Mouse Lemur (Genus Microcebus) Phylogeny
Molecular phylogeny is a fundamental tool to understanding the evolution of all life forms. One common issue faced by molecular phylogeny is the lack of sufficient molecular markers. Here, we present PhyloMarker, a phylogenomic tool designed to find nuclear gene markers for the inference of phylogeny through multiple genome comparison. Around 800 candidate markers were identified by PhyloMarker through comparison of partial genomes of Microcebus and Otolemur. In experimental tests of 20 randomly selected markers, nine markers were successfully amplified by PCR and directly sequenced in all 17 nominal Microcebus species. Phylogenetic analyses of the sequence data obtained for 17 taxa and nine markers confirmed the distinct lineage inferred from previous mtDNA data. PhyloMarker has also been used by other projects including the herons (Ardeidae, Aves) phylogeny and the Wood mice (Muridae, Mammalia) phylogeny. Rapid progression of prostate cancer in men with a BRCA2 mutation.
Men with BRCA2 mutations have been found to be at increased risk of developing prostate cancer. There is a recent report that BRCA2 carriers with prostate cancer have poorer survival than noncarrier prostate cancer patients. In this study, we compared survival of men with a BRCA2 mutation and prostate cancer with that of men with a BRCA1 mutation and prostate cancer. We obtained the age at diagnosis, age at death or current age from 182 men with prostate cancer from families with a BRCA2 mutation and from 119 men with prostate cancer from families with a BRCA1 mutation. The median survival from diagnosis was 4.0 years for men with a BRCA2 mutation vs 8.0 years for men with a BRCA1 mutation, and the difference was highly significant (P<0.01). It may be important to develop targeted chemotherapies to treat prostate cancer in men with a BRCA2 mutation
