Land cover map 2007: using OBIA for LCM2007

    Get PDF
Land cover map 2007 (LCM2007) is an object-based land cover map for the UK containing around 10 million objects. The LCM2007 spatial framework is based on the generalisation of national cartography products (OS MasterMap for Great Britain and Ordnance Survey Northern Ireland for NI). 34 composite images (based on summer and winter data) were classified using a maximum likelihood classifier. Areas where composite data were not available were filled with classifications from single-date data. A set of knowledge-based enhancements (KBEs) were then applied to refine the classification using ancillary data sets, including soil and altitude data. The final product showed a correspondence of 83%, when compared to 9127 ground reference polygons. A range of LCM2007 data products are available ranging from the full vector data set, with 10 attributes per polygon, to a 25m raster data set and a series of 1km raster products

Gauss Composition for P^1, and the universal Jacobian of the Hurwitz space of double covers

We investigate the universal Jacobian of degree n line bundles over the Hurwitz stack of double covers of P^1 by a curve of genus g. Our main results are: the construction of a smooth, irreducible, universally closed (but not separated) moduli compactification of this universal Jacobian; a description of the global geometry and moduli properties of these stacks; and a computation of the Picard groups of these stacks in the cases when n-g is even. An important ingredient of our work is the parametrization of line bundles on double covers by binary quadratic forms. This parametrization generalizes the classical number theoretic correspondence between ideal classes of quadratic rings and integral binary quadratic forms, which in particular gives the group law on integral binary quadratic forms first discovered by Gauss.Comment: mathematical and expositional updates and improvements, 29 pages, 5 figure

Visible light affects mitochondrial function and induces neuronal death in retinal cell cultures

AbstractThe aim of this study was to provide “proof of principle” for the hypothesis that light would have a detrimental influence on ganglion cells in certain situations, like in glaucoma, by directly impinging on the many mitochondria in their axons within the globe. In this study primary rat retinal cultures and freshly isolated liver mitochondria were exposed to light (400–760nm; 500–4000lux) as entering the eye. For culture assessment, 3,(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 4-[3-(-iodophenyl)-2-(4-nitrophenyl)-2H-5-tetzolio]-1,3-benzene disulfonate (WST-1) reduction assays were used to assess cell and mitochondrial viability, respectively. Furthermore, cultures were stained for reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA breakdown, numbers of GABA-immunoreactive (IR) cells and caspase-3 content to provide information concerning the effect of light on neuronal survival. Uptake of 3H-GABA by autoradiography was also used, to assess the effects of light on the energy status of neurons. Light, in an intensity-dependent and trolox-inhibitable manner, reduced cell viability, affected mitochondrial function, increased the number of TUNEL-positive cells, decreased the numbers of GABA-IR neurons and enhanced labelling for ROS. These effects were all exacerbated by the absence of serum. There was also an increased caspase-3 protein content and a reduction of 3H-GABA uptake in light- compared with dark-treated cultures. These findings support the hypothesis that light can affect mitochondria which could lead to neuronal apoptosis if the energetic status of these neurons is already compromised

    Penile Anomalies in Adolescence

This article considers the impact and outcomes of both treatment and underlying condition of penile anomalies in adolescent males. Major congenital anomalies (such as exstrophy/epispadias) are discussed, including the psychological outcomes, common problems (such as corporal asymmetry, chordee, and scarring) in this group, and surgical assessment for potential surgical candidates. The emergence of new surgical techniques continues to improve outcomes and potentially raises patient expectations. The importance of balanced discussion in conditions such as micropenis, including multidisciplinary support for patients, is important in order to achieve appropriate treatment decisions. Topical treatments may be of value, but in extreme cases, phalloplasty is a valuable option for patients to consider. In buried penis, the importance of careful assessment and, for the majority, a delay in surgery until puberty has completed is emphasised. In hypospadias patients, the variety of surgical procedures has complicated assessment of outcomes. It appears that true surgical success may be difficult to measure as many men who have had earlier operations are not reassessed in either puberty or adult life. There is also a brief discussion of acquired penile anomalies, including causation and treatment of lymphoedema, penile fracture/trauma, and priapism
