This fact sheet provides information about food culture in Germany. It discusses traditional foods for special holidays, daily eating patterns, and food staples in the country. The handout also discusses current nutrition recommendations according to the German Nutrition Society and what food patterns are like today.https://dune.une.edu/an_studedres/1006/thumbnail.jp

Quantitative investigation of inlet vortex flow field

    Get PDF
March 1984Includes bibliographical references (leaf 126)A quantitative investigation of the flow field of an inlet in cross-wind has been carried out for various operating conditions, including flow regimes representative of aircraft engine inlets at take-off. The measurements were made to show the influence of two non-dimensional parameters, height of the inlet above the ground to the inlet diameter ratio (H/D), and velocity ratio (Ui/Ue), on the vortex strength (i.e., circulation) and the position of the vortex inside the inlet. In general, as H/D is decreased and/or Ui/Ue is increased, the vortex strengthens. In addition, at an operating condition where a strong inlet vortex was present, the circulation of both the inlet and trailing vortices was determined. These were found to be essentially equal in magnitude but opposite in sign, verifying a previous hypothesis concerning the vortical structure of the flow. Qualitative flow visualization has been done to examine two aspects of the inlet/trailing vortex flow field. One is the nature of the transition between regimes in which an inlet vortex is present and those in which no inlet vortex exists. The other deals with the extent of the separated region on the inlet body. The results of this study were used to support a conceptual model of the formation of an inlet/trailing vortex system for an inlet in a cross-wind.Air Force Office of Scientific Research Contract no. Who Uses Tips as a Reward for Services and When? An Examination of Potential Moderators of the Service-Tipping Relationship

    Get PDF
Consumers in many countries often give voluntary payments of money (tips) to the workers who have served them. These tips are supposed to be a reward for service and research indicates that they do increase with customers’ perceptions of service quality. This paper contributes to the service-tipping literature by examining numerous potential moderators of this relationship in two studies. Results indicate that the service-tipping relationship is robust across meal type, day of week, sex and race of server as well as customers’ alcohol consumption, education, income, race, worship frequency, and hospitality work experience, but that it is stronger for older consumers than for younger ones and for parties with large bills than for parties with smaller bills. The practical and theoretical implications of these and other findings are discussed

A preliminary study on the social and emotional experience of parents of children with cleft lip and palate

    Get PDF
There are very few studies that describe the emotional and social experiences of parents of children with cleft lip and?or palate who are undergoing treatment. To understand these circumstances, 34 parents of children with cleft lip and?or palate were surveyed to find out about the parents? social and emotional experiences of having children with this physical disorder. The research was carried out using structured questionnaires that parents completed during a support group meeting. The questionnaires included questions on the reactions of people toward the child, parents? emotional reactions, social support, coping strategies and resources used. Results of the study indicated that parents do need some assistance during the early stages of treatment. Furthermore, pediatricians play a very important role in the follow-up of treatment, empowerment of parents, and dissemination of information on the child?s condition. Contrary to much speculation, the parents reported that they are generally not stigmatized, and took a proactive approach towards finding out information about the disorder, and also about caring for their children. The study concluded by indicating that future studies would need to have larger samples, span a wider age groups, focus on the children?s first 12 months, and also their experiences when they begin to attend school

Providing Food Assistance in a Pandemic: Views and Lessons Learned from the Frontlines in Northwest Mississippi

    Get PDF
The Center for Population Studies (CPS) at the University of Mississippi (UM) has partnered with the Maddox Foundation (Hernando, MS) and the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi (CFNM) to explore changes in communities across an 11-county region as a way to identify funding priorities designed to address challenges and build upon assets in the region. With a grant from the Maddox Foundation, the CFNM launched FEED Northwest Mississippi to provide emergency funding for area food pantries, especially ones located in rural areas (CFNM 2020). This initiative has now expanded with a host of additional contributors to the FEED Fund. Results of research involving the food pantries and similar organizations will inform additional funding priorities of Maddox and the CFNM in response to the impacts of COVID-19 on individuals, families, and their communities

Acantholytic Anaplastic Extramammary Paget's Disease: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is an uncommon intraepithelial neoplasm that most commonly arises on the vulva and perianal region. Very few cases of EMPD revealing a histological Bowenoid appearance have been reported. This study describes scrotal EMPD presenting with histological features of Bowen's disease in a 79-year-old man. He presented with a 5-year history of a pruritic erythematous plaque and a verrucous papule on the scrotum. The verrucous papule histopathologically showed Bowenoid features, and the erythematous plaque demonstrated acantholytic EMPD. Immunohistochemical findings revealed strong expression for carcinoembryonic antigen, Cam 5.2, epithelial membrane antigen, cytokeratin (CK) 7, and pancytokeratin (AE1/AE3) in both areas, but negative CK20 staining, supporting the overall diagnosis of primary acantholytic anaplastic EMPD. This is the first reported case of acantholytic anaplastic EMPD in the Korean literature

ACE-ASIA - Regional climatic and atmospheric chemical effects of Asian dust and pollution

    Get PDF
Although continental-scale plumes of Asian dust and pollution reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth's surface and perturb the chemistry of the atmosphere, our ability to quantify these effects has been limited by a lack of critical observations, particularly of layers above the surface. Comprehensive surface, airborne, shipboard, and satellite measurements of Asian aerosol chemical composition, size, optical properties, and radiative impacts were performed during the Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE-Asia) study. Measurements within a massive Chinese dust storm at numerous widely spaced sampling locations revealed the highly complex structure of the atmosphere, in which layers of dust, urban pollution, and biomass-burning smoke may be transported long distances as distinct entities or mixed together. The data allow a first-time assessment of the regional climatic and atmospheric chemical effects of a continental-scale mixture of dust and pollution. Our results show that radiative flux reductions during such episodes are sufficient to cause regional climate change
