Cognitive Structure of Social Mobility: Moral Sentiments and Hidden Injuries of Class

Drawing on the mobility accounts of eighty-nine respondents who perceived themselves as socially mobile in post-war Hong Kong, I devise a typology of four biographies – normal, choice, special, and emotional biographies – to examine the cognitive structure of their accounts in order to make sense of moral sentiments of class. Three tentative conclusions are drawn. First, class feelings could be seen as better class markers than self-reported class identity. Second, upward mobility does not simply complicate class feelings but could lead to a distorted class sentiment that justifies rather than challenges class inequality; yet four biographies show a variety of its operation. Third, upward mobility does not necessarily treat previous class injuries; instead, it could bring new class injuries. In sum, social fluidity of a class society does not make class inequality less arbitrary or more just nor does it necessarily render class feelings and moral sentiments of class as irrelevant.Moral Sentiments of Class, Class Injuries, Social Mobility, Biography, Middle Class, Hong Kong

Monolayer protection for eletrochemical migration control in silver nanocomposite

Formation of surface complex between the carboxylate anion and surface silver ion reduces the solubility and diffusivity significantly of migration components and therefore contributes to effective migration control. A fundamental understanding of the mechanism of silver migration control was conducted by studying the current-voltage relationships of the nanocomposites with a migration model. Study Tours by Hong Kong Students to Mainland China: Their Effects on the Identity and Motivation to learn Putonghua

This case study research investigates the effects of study tours to Mainland China on Hong Kong students’ identity and motivation to learn Putonghua. It is always assumed that study tours to Mainland China by Hong Kong secondary school students would bring about positive outcomes in terms of development of their sense of belonging to the country and their motivation to learn the language. Despite heavy investment in these tours by the government and many Hong Kong schools, there has been no systematic study conducted to (dis)prove this assumption. Through a combination of research methods such as personal observations, interviews, learning journals and questionnaire surveys, it has been noted that after participating in the school organized study tours, the integrative and instrumental motivation of many Hong Kong students were indeed enhanced. The sense of belonging to the motherland was also enhanced culturally and economically through Mainland study tours. It is interesting to note that the identity of many participants was transformed gradually. The students in general showed greater awareness of the Hong Kong culture as well, which in turn created a new perspective for themselves and their identity orientation. Furthermore, life inspirations were exhibited in their ethnographic learning journals. Although ethnographic interviews proved difficult for most of the incompetent Putonghua speakers, practicable strategies were used by themselves to keep the conversation going. By using ethnographic interviews, the participants began to understand the way of life, were more willing to learn from the people in various Mainland places and their target language competence was also strengthened. Based on the research findings, pedagogical and practical recommendations are made towards the end of the thesis

Low-power CMOS rectifier and Chien search design for RFID tags

Automotive sensors implemented in radio frequency identification (RFID) tags can correct data errors by using BCH (Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem) decoder, for which Chien search is a computation-intensive key step. Existing low power approaches have drastically degrading performance for multiple-bit-correcting codes. This thesis presents a novel approach of using register-transfer-level (RTL) power management in the search process, leading to significant power savings for BCH codes with higher correction capability. An example for the (255, 187, 9) BCH code has been implemented in 0.18μm CMOS technology. We also consider ways of conserving power for the sole power harvester on a passive tag – the rectifier. With ST CMOS 90nm technology, a three-stage differential-drive CMOS rectifier is designed by using a new transistor scaling method and a piece-wise linear matching technique. For the standard 915MHz band, simulation indicates high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 74% and a significantly increased output power of 30.3μW at 10 meters

Middle-class Students Studying in a Community College in Hong Kong: A Mismatch between High-status Habitus and Low-status Field?

This article is about twelve middle-class students, previously studying in elite primary and secondary schools, making another attempt at getting into university in Hong Kong. Despite their failure at a critical educational stage, which contradicts a general pattern of middle-class educational success, they decide to seek a second chance by reading an associate degree in community college, a perceived inferior educational option. Despite feeling determined, they are anxious and uneasy with taking up this option. How the middle class feel about their academic pursuits, especially after a critical failure, is under-researched. This article attempts to fill this gap by referring to Bourdieu’s notions of habitus and field to make sense of the complex or contradictory feelings of 12 students with a self-conscious, high-status, middle-class habitus in encountering a perceived low-status community college. I shall conclude this article with the normative implication of our discussion in making sense of educational inequality

Journeys through Architecture: the Body, Spaces, and Arts in Dorothy Richardson’s Pilgrimage

The inter-arts potential of Dorothy Miller Richardson’s life’s work, Pilgrimage, has been gaining critical attention since the end of the twentieth century, with continuous scholarly efforts dedicated in revealing the cinematic, painterly, and musical depths of the novel sequence. Building on such established foundation, this study responds to this inter-arts call of Richardson scholarship by taking an architectural turn, and contends Pilgrimage as a piece of architectural construct—a literary work that demonstrates the coming together of the body, spaces, and arts. Interdisplinary in nature, this study draws on diverse fields of inquiry in its configuration of the architectural as manifested in Pilgrimage, with two interconnecting sections. Merleau-Ponty’s perceptual phenomenology and recent theorisations of body-space interaction in various disciplines, such as cultural geography and anthropology, underpin the first section of the discussion, which attempts to explicate the spatial significance implied in Miriam’s (the protagonist) sensuous interactions with the different kinds of space around or within her. While the first section underscores how the art of literature embodies Miriam’s sensuous-spatial dynamics, the second section illuminates how the spatial arts of painting and architecture come into contact with Pilgrimage. Collaborating biographical, painterly, literary, and phenomenological approaches, the thesis considers the sequence’s manoeuver over the issues of simultaneity, instaneity, moment, and subject matter as the manifestation of literary impressionism. After contemplating Pilgrimage as a piece of literary impressionism, the discussion concludes by considering the sequence as a piece of haptic architecture, with the notion of ‘fragile architecture’ formulated by Juhani Pallasmaa. By re-examining how Miriam’s body, spaces, and arts interact and integrate throughout Pilgrimage, the thesis aspires to bring to light its architectural disposition
