Equity vs excellence : a preliminary exploration of Hong Kong\u27s education reform

Although Hong Kong \u27s education system has long been criticized as lacking in creativity and putting too much emphasis on rote learning, on the whole it has served Hong Kong well in the past in that it has bred outstanding business, academic and po1itical leaders who maintained the competitive edge of Hong Kong. The traditional elite schools played a most important role in the process. The education reform, which is still on going, aims to overhaul the entire system by introducing the “through-road” model through changing the existing admission mechanism of Primary 1 and Secondary 1 students, combining different bandings and merging two public examinations into one. We argue that, the education reform may be well-intentioned in eliminating the differences between schools but the social consequence of the reform is the decline of academic excellence and a worsening of the brain-drain problem in Hong Kong

EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT TENNIS SHOES ON THE PERFORMANCE OF RECREATIONAL TENNIS PLAYERS

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of different tennis shoes on the performance of recreational tennis players. Twenty male recreational tennis players participated in the study. Four different tennis shoes were employed and the sequence was randomized for each subject. Three on-court performances (groundstroke, service, and shuttle-run) were chosen and one-way ANOVA with repeated measures (

Enhancing Student Learning with Podcasting, a Newly Emergent Social Technology

    Get PDF
The complement between pull and push learning modes is believed to be contributable to enriching students\u27 learning experiences. Podcasting, a push technology, can be used to push teaching materials to the students\u27 handheld devices, allowing them to study without any geographical and temporal constraints. The students can then revise the materials according to their own preferences. This explicit push technology together with students\u27 implicit pull motivation can encourage the students to learn in a more efficient way. As the students have the autonomy to choose their preferred media to access learning materials, it is believed to be able to increase students\u27 satisfaction in the learning process. We implemented this idea in one of the courses taught in a university in Hong Kong. The encouraging findings confirmed with our belief that podcasting can help students to learn better by increasing their learning satisfaction

Towards purification of antibodies with light

One of the most common method to purify a particular antibody is done by affinity chromatography. Antibody binding proteins such as Protein A are used to purify antibody from the mixture of proteins and antibodies. The main objective of my project is to design a new method that utilizes light-responsive (LR) affinity-capture ligands for antibody purification. This would vastly improve the quality of purification of the antibodies. Using the LR affinity-capture ligands to purify the antibody can be widely applied to many fields related to biotechnology, life science industry, and pharmaceutical industry. To achieve this, we designed the LR cyclic peptide as affinity ligand that recognizes the constant region (Fc) of the antibody we want to purify. We began with octapeptide sequences that was known to have an affinity to the Fc region of IGg antibody. The octapeptide was attempted to react with the LR azobenzene linker 3,3’-bis(sulfonato)- 4,4’-bis(chloroacetamido)-azobenzene (BSBCA) to create a macrocyclic product, LR-macrocycle peptide. We hypothesized that the LR-macrocycle peptide will have two  geometric isomers: one isomer with higher affinity and one isomer with lower affinity towards the Fc region. The peptides were immobilized on paper for observing the affinity difference of  two isomers towards the Fc region of the antibody. The data obtained from preliminary study suggested that the LR-macrocycle peptides had different affinities between the two isomers. To further understanding the system, we will be validating the affinity differences of those ligands and will be optimizing the peptide sequences to increase the efficiency of the technique. *Indicates faculty mentor
