High p_T Triggered Delta-eta,Delta-phi Correlations over a Broad Range in Delta-eta

The first measurement of pseudorapidity (Delta-eta) and azimuthal angle (Delta-phi) correlations between high transverse momentum charged hadrons (p_T > 2.5 GeV/c) and all associated particles is presented at both short- (small Delta-eta) and long-range (large Delta-eta) over a continuous pseudorapidity acceptance (-4<Delta-eta<2). In these proceedings, the various near- and away-side features of the correlation structure are discussed as a function of centrality in Au+Au collisions measured by PHOBOS at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. In particular, this measurement allows a much more complete determination of the longitudinal extent of the ridge structure, first observed by the STAR collaboration over a limited eta range. In central collisions the ridge persists to at least Delta-eta=4, diminishing in magnitude as collisions become more peripheral until it disappears around Npart=80.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, presented at the 20th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions, "Quark Matter 2008", Jaipur, India, February 4-10, 2008. Pion Interferometry for a Granular Source of Quark-Gluon Plasma Droplets

We examine the two-pion interferometry for a granular source of quark-gluon plasma droplets. The evolution of the droplets is described by relativistic hydrodynamics with an equation of state suggested by lattice gauge results. Pions are assumed to be emitted thermally from the droplets at the freeze-out configuration characterized by a freeze-out temperature TfT_f. We find that the HBT radius RoutR_{out} decreases if the initial size of the droplets decreases. On the other hand, RsideR_{side} depends on the droplet spatial distribution and is relatively independent of the droplet size. It increases with an increase in the width of the spatial distribution and the collective-expansion velocity of the droplets. As a result, the value of RoutR_{out} can lie close to RsideR_{side} for a granular quark-gluon plasma source. The granular model of the emitting source may provide an explanation to the RHIC HBT puzzle and may lead to a new insight into the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma phase transition.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Ignition characterization of LOX/hydrocarbon propellants

    Get PDF
The results of an evaluation of the ignition characteristics of the gaseous oxygen (Gox)/Ethanol propellant combination are presented. Ignition characterization was accomplished through the analysis, design, fabrication and testing of a spark initiated torch igniter and prototype 620 lbF thruster/igniter assembly. The igniter was tested over a chamber pressure range of 74 to 197 psia and mixture ratio range of 0.778 to 3.29. Cold (-92 to -165 F) and ambient (44 to 80 F) propellant temperatures were used. Spark igniter ignition limits and thruster steady state and pulse mode, performance, cooling and stability data are presented. Spark igniter ignition limits are presented in terms of cold flow pressure, ignition chamber diameter and mixture ratio. Thruster performance is presented in terms of vacuum specific impulse versus engine mixture ratio. Gox/Ethanol propellants were shown to be ignitable over a wide range of mixture ratios. Cold propellants were shown to have a minor effect on igniter ignition limits. Thruster pulse mode capability was demonstrated with multiple pulses of 0.08 sec duration and less

Effective hadronic Lagrangian for charm mesons

An effective hadronic Lagrangian including the charm mesons is introduced to study their interactions in hadronic matter. Using coupling constants that are determined either empirically or by the SU(4) symmetry, we have evaluated the absorption cross sections of J/ψJ/\psi and the scattering cross sections of DD and DD^* by π\pi and ρ\rho mesons.Comment: 5 pages, 4 eps figures, presented at Strangeness 2000, Berkeley. Magnetic domain walls in constrained geometries

Magnetic domain walls have been studied in micrometer-sized Fe20Ni80 elements containing geometrical constrictions by spin-polarized scanning electron microscopy and numerical simulations. By controlling the constriction dimensions, the wall width can be tailored and the wall type modified. In particular, the width of a 180 degree Neel wall can be strongly reduced or increased by the constriction geometry compared with the wall in unconstrained systems.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

Heavy flavor kinetics at the hadronization transition

We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium breakup processes due to the Mott effect for light (pi, rho) and open-charm (D, D*) quark-antiquark bound states at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. The Mott effect for the D-mesons effectively reduces the threshold for charmonium breakup cross sections, which is suggested as an explanation of the anomalous J/psi suppression phenomenon in the NA50 experiment. Further implications of finite-temperature mesonic correlations for the hadronization of heavy flavors in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Contribution to SQM2001 Conference, submitted to J. Minimizing Unsatisfaction in Colourful Neighbourhoods

    Get PDF
Colouring sparse graphs under various restrictions is a theoretical problem of significant practical relevance. Here we consider the problem of maximizing the number of different colours available at the nodes and their neighbourhoods, given a predetermined number of colours. In the analytical framework of a tree approximation, carried out at both zero and finite temperatures, solutions obtained by population dynamics give rise to estimates of the threshold connectivity for the incomplete to complete transition, which are consistent with those of existing algorithms. The nature of the transition as well as the validity of the tree approximation are investigated.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, substantially revised with additional explanatio
