Nutrients in waters on the inner shelf between Cape Charles and Cape Hatteras
The distribution of nutrients in the shelf waters of the southern tip of the Middle Atlantic Bight was investigated. It is concluded that the outflow of freshwater from the Chesapeake Bay is a potential source of nutrients to the adjacent shelf waters. However, a quantitative estimation of its importance cannot yet be made because (1) there are other sources of nutrients to the study area and these sources cannot yet be quantified and (2) the concentrations of nutrients in the outflow from Chesapeake Bay exhibit significant short-term and long-term temporal variabilities
A Pan1/End3/Sla1 complex links Arp2/3-mediated actin assembly to sites of clathrin-mediated endocytosis.
More than 60 highly conserved proteins appear sequentially at sites of clathrin-mediated endocytosis in yeast and mammals. The yeast Eps15-related proteins Pan1 and End3 and the CIN85-related protein Sla1 are known to interact with each other in vitro, and they all appear after endocytic-site initiation but before endocytic actin assembly, which facilitates membrane invagination/scission. Here we used live-cell imaging in parallel with genetics and biochemistry to explore comprehensively the dynamic interactions and functions of Pan1, End3, and Sla1. Our results indicate that Pan1 and End3 associate in a stable manner and appear at endocytic sites before Sla1. The End3 C-terminus is necessary and sufficient for its cortical localization via interaction with Pan1, whereas the End3 N-terminus plays a crucial role in Sla1 recruitment. We systematically examined the dynamic behaviors of endocytic proteins in cells in which Pan1 and End3 were simultaneously eliminated, using the auxin-inducible degron system. The results lead us to propose that endocytic-site initiation and actin assembly are separable processes linked by a Pan1/End3/Sla1 complex. Finally, our study provides mechanistic insights into how Pan1 and End3 function with Sla1 to coordinate cargo capture with actin assembly
A meta-narrative review of electronic patient records
This session comprises four papers that consider how systematic review methods may be
developed in order to make the best use of complex evidence in education and health.
The methods and approaches reflected upon in these papers are not drawn from a single
research tradition, but share a common goal of broadening the methodological scope of
systematic reviews and better understanding the utilisation of knowledge produced in this
way. The first paper (Henry Potts) reports an ongoing review using a meta-narrative
approach to make sense of the diverse sources of knowledge regarding electronic patient
records. The review method has stressed the importance of understanding knowledge
from within the research tradition in which it was produced; it is argued that this has
important implications for the way that evidence is utilised in the policy making process.
The second paper (Geoff Wong) reflects upon the experience of using an explicit realist
approach in the synthesis of the evidence in Internet based learning. This realist synthesis
offers a method of making sense of the highly heterogeneous and context dependent
evidence which exists in this field thus enabling greater insights into what makes such
educational interventions ‘work’. The third paper (Rod Sheaff) reports a review of the
predominantly qualitative research literature on organisational structures and their
impacts upon policy outcomes in health systems. A scoping study found 14389 relevant
papers of which 1568 were selected for review. These studies were very variable in the
amount and quality of the qualitative data, hence 'evidence', which they reported. The
paper describes an attempt to adapt realist methods so as to synthesise such bodies of
research in ways which take account of this variation in the strength of qualitative
evidence. The fourth paper (Mark Pearson) draws upon the work of Donald Campbell
and colleagues in order to gain a fuller understanding of how systematic reviews are
utilised in the policy making process. It is argued that interpretive approaches to
understanding policy making (such as rhetorical analysis) need to be tempered with a
more nuanced understanding of research validity. The case is made that interpretive
approaches not only can, but should, be melded with research validity to increase
understanding of the policy making process
Spin-Seebeck effect in a strongly interacting Fermi gas
We study the spin-Seebeck effect in a strongly interacting, two-component
Fermi gas and propose an experiment to measure this effect by relatively
displacing spin up and spin down atomic clouds in a trap using spin-dependent
temperature gradients. We compute the spin-Seebeck coefficient and related
spin-heat transport coefficients as functions of temperature and interaction
strength. We find that when the inter-spin scattering length becomes larger
than the Fermi wavelength, the spin-Seebeck coefficient changes sign as a
function of temperature, and hence so does the direction of the
spin-separation. We compute this zero-crossing temperature as a function of
interaction strength and in particular in the unitary limit for the inter-spin
scattering
Derivation of linearized transfer functions for switching-mode regulations. Phase A: Current step-up and voltage step-up converters
Small-signal models are derived for the power stage of the voltage step-up (boost) and the current step-up (buck) converters. The modeling covers operation in both the continuous-mmf mode and the discontinuous-mmf mode. The power stage in the regulated current step-up converter on board the Dynamics Explorer Satellite is used as an example to illustrate the procedures in obtaining the small-signal functions characterizing a regulated converter
