Session 2-2-E: Slots are to Las Vegas as Baccarat is to Macau: A Game Analysis

Money is reeling in the casinos in Las Vegas, while chips are rolling in the casinos in Macau. These two different phrases exactly symbolize the ways how these two different gaming jurisdictions make their prosperity. There are several reels in the slot machines and as they are spun thousands and millions of times…money reels in, it creates the profit for the casinos in Las Vegas. Baccarat players wager dead chips in the VIP rooms rolling thousands and millions of times…money rolls in, it creates the profit for the casinos in Macau

Personal use is permitted, but republication/redistribution requires IEEE permission. This paper introduces a unique approach for the implementation of a miniaturized on-chip resonator and its application for the first-order bandpass filter (BPF) design. This approach utilizes a combination of a broadside-coupling technique and a split-ring structure. To fully understand the principle behind it, simplified LC equivalent-circuit models are provided. By analyzing these models, guidelines for implementation of an ultra-compact resonator and a BPF are given. To further demonstrate the feasibility of using this approach in practice, both the implemented resonator and the filter are fabricated in a standard 0.13-μm (Bi)-CMOS technology. The measured results show that the resonator can generate a resonance at 66.75 GHz, while the BPF has a center frequency at 40 GHz and an insertion loss of 1.7 dB. The chip size of both the resonator and the BPF, excluding the pads, is only 0.012mm 2 (0.08 × 0.144 mm 2).Peer reviewe

Single and Multiple-Band Bandpass Filters Using Bandstop Resonator Sections

In this paper, the design methodology and implementation of single-band and multiple-band elliptic function bandpass filters (BPFs) are presented, based on the concept of bandstop resonator (BSR) sections. One or more single-mode and multiple-mode BSRs can be dangled from a non-resonant node. Each BSR can generate one reflection zeroes (RZ) and one transmission zeroes (TZ). Multiple BSR sections are used to flexibly and independently control the location and bandwidth of the stop bands and therefore the same of the passbands. The method to design single- and multiple-band elliptic function BPFs has been detailed using a number of examples based on waveguide technology. For proof of concept, a 6th-order single-band BPF with six BSR&amp;#x00A0;&amp;#x003D;&amp;#x00A0;2 sections and a 3rd-order dual-band BPF using three BSR&amp;#x00A0;&amp;#x003D;&amp;#x00A0;3 sections are designed and fabricated monolithically using a selective-laser-melting (SLM) 3-D printing technique. Excellent agreement between simulated and measured results verifies the proposed design methodology and its versatility as well as the additive-manufacture approach.</p

An Ultra-Wideband Circularly Polarized Asymmetric-S Antenna With Enhanced Bandwidth and Beamwidth Performance

    Get PDF
This paper introduces an ultra-wideband circularly polarized (CP) asymmetric-S antenna with wide axial ratio beamwidth (ARBW) for C-band applications. The proposed antenna is realized by bending a linearly polarized dipole into asymmetric-S shape with variable trace width, which achieves CP radiation. Unlike the reported symmetric-S antenna, the proposed antenna is constituted with two unequal curved arms to enhance the bandwidth and beamwidth performances. Compared with the symmetric-S antenna, the proposed antenna demonstrates much wider AR bandwidth and wider ARBW over broader frequency range. A prototype is fabricated to verify the design principle. The measured and simulated results are very consistent and both indicate that the proposed antenna has a wide impedance bandwidth (VSWR <; 2) of 70.2% (3.58 to 7.46 GHz), and a wide 3-dB AR bandwidth of 84.8% (2.75 to 6.8 GHz). Moreover, maximum ARBW of 153° is achieved, and a 3-dB ARBW of more than 100° is maintained within a wide operation bandwidth of 46.3% (3.65-5.85 GHz)

A Differential Broadband Dual-Polarized Base Station Antenna Element for 4G And 5G Applications

    Get PDF
In this paper, a broadband differential feed ±45° dual-polarized base station antenna element is proposed for 4G and 5G mobile communications. The proposed antenna consists of two orthogonally placed dipoles, square patch and reflector, where each dipole adds six elliptical branches to broaden the bandwidth. Simulation results show that the proposed antenna element has the impedance bandwidth of 65% (1.84-3.6 GHz) within the operating frequency (S11 <; -15 dB and S21 <; -21 dB), and good radiation characteristics and high cross polarization ratio are also achieved

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Stroke caused by brain ischemia is the third leading cause of adult disability. Active prevention and early treatment of stroke targeting the causes and risk factors may decrease its incidence, mortality and subsequent disability. Pien Tze Huang (PZH), a Chinese medicine formula, was found to have anti-edema, anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic effects that can prevent brain damage. This study aims to investigate the potential mechanisms of the preventive effects of Pien Tze Huang on brain damage caused by chronic ischemia and hypertensive stroke in rats.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The effects of Pien Tze Huang on brain protein expression in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) and stroke prone SHR (SHRsp) were studied with 2-D gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometric analysis with a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF)/TOF tandem mass spectrometer and on brain cell death with enzyme link immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunostaining.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Pien Tze Huang decreased cell death in hippocampus and cerebellum caused by chronic ischemia and hypertensive stroke. Immunostaining of caspase-3 results indicated that Pien Tze Huang prevents brain cells from apoptosis caused by ischemia. Brain protein expression results suggested that Pien Tze Huang downregulated QCR2 in the electron transfer chain of mitochondria preventing reactive oxygen species (ROS) damage and possibly subsequent cell death (caspase 3 assay) as caused by chronic ischemia or hypertensive stroke to hippocampus and cerebellum.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Pien Tze Huang showed preventive effects on limiting the damage or injury caused by chronic ischemia and hypertensive stroke in rats. The effect of Pien Tze Huang was possibly related to prevention of cell death from apoptosis or ROS/oxidative damage in mitochondria.</p
