    Review of Direct Metal Bonding for Microelectronic Interconnections

    Microelectronic interconnections require advanced joining techniques. Direct metal bonding methods, which include thercomsonic and thermocompression bonding, offer remarkable advantages over soldering and adhesives joining. These processes are reviewed in this paper. The progress made in this area is outlined. Some work concerned with the bonding modeling is also presented. This model is based on the joint interface mechanics resulting from compression. Both bump and substrate deformation are taken into account. The improved understanding of the relationship between the deformation and bonding formation may provide more accurate joint evaluation criterion.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

    Quantum measures for density correlations in optical lattices

    The density-density correlation profiles obtained superimposing absorption images from atomic clouds freely expanding after the release of the confining optical lattice can be theoretically described in terms of a generalized quantum measure based on coherent-like states. We show that the corresponding density patterns differ in a testable way from those computed using standard many-body mean values, usually adopted in fitting experimental data.Comment: LaTeX, 14 page

    Isocurvature forecast in the anthropic axion window

    We explore the cosmological sensitivity to the amplitude of isocurvature fluctuations that would be caused by axions in the "anthropic window" where the axion decay constant f_a >> 10^12 GeV and the initial misalignment angle Theta_i << 1. In a minimal Lambda-CDM cosmology extended with subdominant scale-invariant isocurvature fluctuations, existing data constrain the isocurvature fraction to alpha < 0.09 at 95% C.L. If no signal shows up, Planck can improve this constraint to 0.042 while an ultimate CMB probe limited only by cosmic variance in both temperature and E-polarisation can reach 0.017, about a factor of five better than the current limit. In the parameter space of f_a and H_I (Hubble parameter during inflation) we identify a small region where axion detection remains within the reach of realistic cosmological probes.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures; v2: matches published versio

    MNEs and flexible working practices in Mauritius

    We compare how far companies based in Africa, India and the 'global North' operating in Mauritius adopt high-trust flexible working practices, and how these are linked to different clusters of wider labour management practice. Using comprehensive firm-level data collected in late 2011, we find that African/Indian company practices are closer to those of indigenous firms than to those of Northern companies. The different company groups operate in quite different ways but regional MNEs operate in a similar way to indigenous companies. We therefore conclude that Rugman and Verbeke’s ‘regionalization’ theory also applies to the HR field. We further find that both a relatively strategic approach to HRM and measures to develop employer-employee interdependence are, respectively, linked directly and indirectly to flexible working incidence

    Sub-barrier capture with quantum diffusion approach: actinide-based reactions

    With the quantum diffusion approach the behavior of capture cross sections and mean-square angular momenta of captured systems are revealed in the reactions with deformed nuclei at subbarrier energies. The calculated results are in a good agreement with existing experimental data. With decreasing bombarding energy under the barrier the external turning point of the nucleusnucleus potential leaves the region of short-range nuclear interaction and action of friction. Because of this change of the regime of interaction, an unexpected enhancement of the capture cross section is expected at bombarding energies far below the Coulomb barrier. This effect is shown its worth in the dependence of mean-square angular momentum of captured system on the bombarding energy. From the comparison of calculated and experimental capture cross sections, the importance of quasifission near the entrance channel is shown for the actinide-based reactions leading to superheavy nuclei.Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, Regular Articl

    The Muonium Atom as a Probe of Physics beyond the Standard Model

    The observed interactions between particles are not fully explained in the successful theoretical description of the standard model to date. Due to the close confinement of the bound state muonium (M=ÎŒ+e−M = \mu^+ e^-) can be used as an ideal probe of quantum electrodynamics and weak interaction and also for a search for additional interactions between leptons.     Elastic electron deuteron scattering with consistent meson exchange and relativistic contributions of leading order

    The influence of relativistic contributions to elastic electron deuteron scattering is studied systematically at low and intermediate momentum transfers (Q2≀30Q^2\leq 30 fm−2^{-2}). In a (p/M)(p/M)-expansion, all leading order relativistic π\pi-exchange contributions consistent with the Bonn OBEPQ models are included. In addition, static heavy meson exchange currents including boost terms and lowest order ÏÏ€Îł\rho\pi\gamma-currents are considered. Sizeable effects from the various relativistic two-body contributions, mainly from π\pi-exchange, have been found in form factors, structure functions and the tensor polarization T20T_{20}.     Onset of Superfluidity in 4He Films Adsorbed on Disordered Substrates

    We have studied 4He films adsorbed in two porous glasses, aerogel and Vycor, using high precision torsional oscillator and DC calorimetry techniques. Our investigation focused on the onset of superfluidity at low temperatures as the 4He coverage is increased. Torsional oscillator measurements of the 4He-aerogel system were used to determine the superfluid density of films with transition temperatures as low as 20 mK. Heat capacity measurements of the 4He-Vycor system probed the excitation spectrum of both non-superfluid and superfluid films for temperatures down to 10 mK. Both sets of measurements suggest that the critical coverage for the onset of superfluidity corresponds to a mobility edge in the chemical potential, so that the onset transition is the bosonic analog of a superconductor-insulator transition. The superfluid density measurements, however, are not in agreement with the scaling theory of an onset transition from a gapless, Bose glass phase to a superfluid.
