Genetic Structure of the Rice Blast Pathogen (Magnaporthe oryzae) over a Decade in North Central California Rice Fields.
Rice blast, caused by the ascomycete Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the most destructive rice diseases worldwide. Even though the disease has been present in California since 1996, there is no data for the pathogen population biology in the state. Using amplified fragment length polymorphisms and mating-type markers, the M. oryzae population diversity was investigated using isolates collected when the disease was first established in California and isolates collected a decade later. While in the 1990 samples, a single multilocus genotype (MLG) was identified (MLG1), over a decade later, we found 14 additional MLGs in the 2000 isolates. Some of these MLGs were found to infect the only rice blast-resistant cultivar (M-208) available for commercial production in California. The same samples also had a significant decrease of MLG1. MLG1 was found infecting the resistant rice cultivar M-208 on one occasion whereas MLG7 was the most common genotype infecting the M-208. MLG7 was identified in the 2000 samples, and it was not present in the M. oryzae population a decade earlier. Our results demonstrate a significant increase in genotypic diversity over time with no evidence of sexual reproduction and suggest a recent introduction of new virulent race(s) of the pathogen. In addition, our data could provide information regarding the durability of the Pi-z resistance gene of the M-208. This information will be critical to plant breeders in developing strategies for deployment of other rice blast resistance genes/cultivars in the future
Strategies for Water Reclamation: The Role of Policy and Technology in the Las Vegas Water Supply
The goals of this report are to: (i) consider Las Vegas' current water reclamation and reuse strategies using a case study framework to examine policy and reclamation technology issues in urban areas; and (ii) using this case study, develop general recommendations and best practices to guide the implementation of water reclamation technologies in the U.S. To accomplish these goals, the committee assessed: (i) the state of the art in water reclamation; (ii) how water management issues and the role of water reclamation are framed in Las Vegas; (iii) the perspectives and alignment of different groups of stakeholders involved in water management issues; and (iv) reclamation technology and policy interactions with respect to public perception, health, environment, regulation and incentives, and security issues
Generation of ultrabright tunable polarization entanglement without spatial, spectral, or temporal constraints
The need for spatial and spectral filtering in the generation of polarization
entanglement is eliminated by combining two coherently-driven type-II
spontaneous parametric downconverters. The resulting ultrabright source emits
photon pairs that are polarization entangled over the entire spatial cone and
spectrum of emission. We detect a flux of 12 000 polarization-entangled
pairs/s per mW of pump power at 90% quantum-interference visibility, and the
source can be temperature tuned for 5 nm around frequency degeneracy. The
output state is actively controlled by precisely adjusting the relative phase
of the two coherent pumps.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Constant Size Molecular Descriptors For Use With Machine Learning
A set of molecular descriptors whose length is independent of molecular size
is developed for machine learning models that target thermodynamic and
electronic properties of molecules. These features are evaluated by monitoring
performance of kernel ridge regression models on well-studied data sets of
small organic molecules. The features include connectivity counts, which
require only the bonding pattern of the molecule, and encoded distances, which
summarize distances between both bonded and non-bonded atoms and so require the
full molecular geometry. In addition to having constant size, these features
summarize information regarding the local environment of atoms and bonds, such
that models can take advantage of similarities resulting from the presence of
similar chemical fragments across molecules. Combining these two types of
features leads to models whose performance is comparable to or better than the
current state of the art. The features introduced here have the advantage of
leading to models that may be trained on smaller molecules and then used
successfully on larger molecules.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
Angiogenesis in Paget's Disease of the Vulva and the Breast: Correlation with Microvessel Density
Our understanding of the pathogenesis of Paget's disease of the vulva and the breast remains limited. Current evidence supports the fact that angiogenesis plays an important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Therefore, we sought to define its role, as correlated with microvessel density, in Paget's disease of the vulva and the breast.
Microvessels were analysed using anti-von Willebrand factor antibody in 105 cases of Paget's disease of the vulva and the breast comprising 71 cases of Paget's disease of the vulva, including 8 cases with invasive disease, and 34 cases of Paget's disease of the breast. The latter included 12 cases with DCIS, 5 cases with both DCIS and invasive carcinoma, and 6 with carcinoma alone. Eleven cases had no underlying tumour identified. Increased microvessel density was demonstrated in Paget's disease of the breast with DCIS and with carcinoma alone compared to Paget's disease of the breast alone, P < 0.08 and P < 0.013, respectively. There were no significant differences in microvessel density in the vulval cases. Neovascularisation is an important process in the development of Paget's disease of the breast. Other biological and molecular processes are more involved in the pathogenesis of Paget's disease of the vulva
Pregnancy during COVID-19: social contact patterns and vaccine coverage of pregnant women from CoMix in 19 European countries.
BACKGROUND
Evidence and advice for pregnant women evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic. We studied social contact behaviour and vaccine uptake in pregnant women between March 2020 and September 2021 in 19 European countries.
METHODS
In each country, repeated online survey data were collected from a panel of nationally-representative participants. We calculated the adjusted mean number of contacts reported with an individual-level generalized additive mixed model, modelled using the negative binomial distribution and a log link function. Mean proportion of people in isolation or quarantine, and vaccination coverage by pregnancy status and gender were calculated using a clustered bootstrap.
FINDINGS
We recorded 4,129 observations from 1,041 pregnant women, and 115,359 observations from 29,860 non-pregnant individuals aged 18-49. Pregnant women made slightly fewer contacts (3.6, 95%CI = 3.5-3.7) than non-pregnant women (4.0, 95%CI = 3.9-4.0), driven by fewer work contacts but marginally more contacts in non-essential social settings. Approximately 15-20% pregnant and 5% of non-pregnant individuals reported to be in isolation and quarantine for large parts of the study period. COVID-19 vaccine coverage was higher in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women between January and April 2021. Since May 2021, vaccination in non-pregnant women began to increase and surpassed that in pregnant women.
INTERPRETATION
Limited social contact to avoid pathogen exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge to many, especially women going through pregnancy. More recognition of maternal social support desire is needed in the ongoing pandemic. As COVID-19 vaccination continues to remain an important pillar of outbreak response, strategies to promote correct information can provide reassurance and facilitate informed pregnancy vaccine decisions in this vulnerable group
