High p_T Triggered Delta-eta,Delta-phi Correlations over a Broad Range in Delta-eta
The first measurement of pseudorapidity (Delta-eta) and azimuthal angle
(Delta-phi) correlations between high transverse momentum charged hadrons (p_T
> 2.5 GeV/c) and all associated particles is presented at both short- (small
Delta-eta) and long-range (large Delta-eta) over a continuous pseudorapidity
acceptance (-4<Delta-eta<2). In these proceedings, the various near- and
away-side features of the correlation structure are discussed as a function of
centrality in Au+Au collisions measured by PHOBOS at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. In
particular, this measurement allows a much more complete determination of the
longitudinal extent of the ridge structure, first observed by the STAR
collaboration over a limited eta range. In central collisions the ridge
persists to at least Delta-eta=4, diminishing in magnitude as collisions become
more peripheral until it disappears around Npart=80.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, presented at the 20th International Conference on

Pion Interferometry for a Granular Source of Quark-Gluon Plasma Droplets
We examine the two-pion interferometry for a granular source of quark-gluon
plasma droplets. The evolution of the droplets is described by relativistic
hydrodynamics with an equation of state suggested by lattice gauge results.
Pions are assumed to be emitted thermally from the droplets at the freeze-out
configuration characterized by a freeze-out temperature . We find that the
HBT radius decreases if the initial size of the droplets decreases.
On the other hand, depends on the droplet spatial distribution and
is relatively independent of the droplet size. It increases with an increase in
the width of the spatial distribution and the collective-expansion velocity of
the droplets. As a result, the value of can lie close to
for a granular quark-gluon plasma source. The granular model of the emitting
source may provide an explanation to the RHIC HBT puzzle and may lead to a new
insight into the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma phase transition.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Heavy flavor kinetics at the hadronization transition
We investigate the in-medium modification of the charmonium breakup processes
due to the Mott effect for light (pi, rho) and open-charm (D, D*)
quark-antiquark bound states at the chiral/deconfinement phase transition. The
Mott effect for the D-mesons effectively reduces the threshold for charmonium
breakup cross sections, which is suggested as an explanation of the anomalous
J/psi suppression phenomenon in the NA50 experiment. Further implications of
finite-temperature mesonic correlations for the hadronization of heavy flavors
in heavy-ion collisions are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, Contribution to SQM2001 Conference, submitted to

Exploring Early Parton Momentum Distribution with the Ridge from the Near-Side Jet
In a central nucleus-nucleus collision at high-energies, medium partons
kicked by a near-side jet acquire a momentum along the jet direction and
subsequently materialize as the observed ridge particles. They carry direct
information on the early parton momentum distribution which can be extracted by
using the ridge data for central AuAu collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV. The
extracted parton momentum distribution has a thermal-like transverse momentum
distribution but a non-Gaussian, relatively flat rapidity distribution at
mid-rapidity with sharp kinematic boundaries at large rapidities that depend on
the transverse momentum.Comment: In Proceedings of 20th International Conference on Ultra-Relativistic

Possible and Molecular states in a chiral quark model
We perform a systematic study of the bound state problem of and
systems by using effective interaction in our chiral quark model.
Our results show that both the interactions of and states
are attractive, which consequently result in
and bound states.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1204.395
Measurement of Cosmic-ray Muons and Muon-induced Neutrons in the Aberdeen Tunnel Underground Laboratory
We have measured the muon flux and production rate of muon-induced neutrons
at a depth of 611 m water equivalent. Our apparatus comprises three layers of
crossed plastic scintillator hodoscopes for tracking the incident cosmic-ray
muons and 760 L of gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator for producing and
detecting neutrons. The vertical muon intensity was measured to be cmssr. The yield of
muon-induced neutrons in the liquid scintillator was determined to be
neutrons/(gcm). A fit to the recently measured neutron
yields at different depths gave a mean muon energy dependence of for liquid-scintillator targets.Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, 3 table
LDEF Space Plasma-High Voltage Drainage Experiment post-flight results
The Space Plasma-High Voltage Drainage Experiment (SP-HVDE) was comprised of two identical experimental trays. With one tray located on the leading (ram facing, B10) edge and the other located on the trailing (wake facing, D4) edge of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), it was possible to directly compare the effects of ram and wake spacecraft environments on charged dielectric materials. Six arrays of Kapton dielectric samples of 2 mil, 3 mil, and 5 mil thicknesses maintained at +/- 300, +/- 500, and +/- 1000 voltage bias formed the experimental matrix of each tray. In addition, each tray carried two solar cell strings, one biased at +300 volts and the other at -300 volts, to study current leakage from High Voltage Solar Arrays (HVSA). The SP-HVDE provides the first direct, long-term, in-flight measurements of average leakage current through dielectric materials under electric stress. The experiment also yields information on the long term stability of the bulk dielectric properties of such materials. Data and findings of the SP-HVDE are an extension of those from shorter term flight experiments such as the PIX-1 (Plasma Interaction Experiment) and PIX-2 and are therefore valuable in the design and evaluation of long-lived space systems with high voltage systems exposed to the low earth orbital environment. A summary of the SP-HVDE post flight analysis final report delivered to the LDEF Project Office under contract to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration is presented
Then again, how often does the Unruh-DeWitt detector click if we switch it carefully?
The transition probability in first-order perturbation theory for an
Unruh-DeWitt detector coupled to a massless scalar field in Minkowski space is
calculated. It has been shown recently that the conventional
regularisation prescription for the correlation function leads to non-Lorentz
invariant results for the transition rate, and a different regularisation,
involving spatial smearing of the field, has been advocated to replace it. We
show that the non-Lorentz invariance arises solely from the assumption of
sudden switch-on and switch-off of the detector, and that when the model
includes a smooth switching function the results from the conventional
regularisation are both finite and Lorentz invariant. The sharp switching limit
of the model is also discussed, as well as the falloff properties of the
spectrum for large frequencies.Comment: 16 pages, v3. Final published version with section 5 expande
Effects of CMB temperature uncertainties on cosmological parameter estimation
We estimate the effect of the experimental uncertainty in the measurement of
the temperature of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on the extraction of
cosmological parameters from future CMB surveys. We find that even for an ideal
experiment limited only by cosmic variance up to l = 2500 for both the
temperature and polarisation measurements, the projected cosmological parameter
errors are remarkably robust against the uncertainty of 1 mK in the FIRAS
instrument's CMB temperature monopole measurement. The maximum degradation in
sensitivity is 20%, for the baryon density estimate, relative to the case in
which the monopole is known infinitely well. While this degradation is
acceptable, we note that reducing the uncertainty in the current temperature
measurement by a factor of five will bring it down to the per cent level. We
also estimate the effect of the uncertainty in the dipole temperature
measurement. Assuming the overall calibration of the data to be dominated by
the dipole error of 0.2% from FIRAS, the sensitivity degradation is
insignificant and does not exceed 10% in any parameter direction.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, uses iopart.cls, v2: added discussion of CMB
