Direct observation of a liquid film under a vapor environment in a pool boiling using a nanofluid

The existence of a liquid film separating a vapor bubble from a heated solid surface is confirmed using a nanofluid. The existence of such a liquid film had been a theoretical premise of the critical heat flux mechanism, significantly difficult to verify through experimental observations. Here, we show that a liquid film under a massive vapor bubble adheres to a heated solid surface. The liquid film comes into being trapped in a dynamic coalescence environment of nucleate bubbles, which grow and depart continuously from the heated surface. In its dryout process, the liquid film displays vapor "holes" originating from the rupture of discrete nucleating bubbles. The dryout process of the liquid film can be understood from the vaporization of rims of the holes and of smooth film region.open51

Intra-wave-phase cross-shore profile modelling by using boundary-fitted slowly moving grid

Coastal bed profile change is described by bed load, pick-up, and settling on a boundary-fitted moving grid. Existing bed load formula is modified by changing threshold bed shear stress to reflect local bed slope. A numerical model system adopting the above function is developed to simulate cross-shore sediment transport around swash zone with steep bed slope as well as surf zone. The model system adopts a moving boundary grid which fits bed boundary slope, and other horizontal grid lines are parallel to the bed grid line. The model system is composed of flow module and sediment transport module. The flow module solves continuity equation and Reynolds-average Navier-Stokes momentum equations in intra-wave-phase manner. The flow module provides detailed flow information including near-bed fluid velocity which varies asymmetrically within a regular wave period near sea-bed and wave-phase average undertow profile of main fluid body including wave boundary layer. The sediment transport module solves sediment mass conservation equation. Exchange of sediment mass between bed itself and fluid column containing suspended sediment happens through pick-up and deposition. Wild bed level undulation is controlled by using a smoothing method. Model system is applied to two extreme cases of sand experiments by Kajima et al., and reasonable agreements between measurements and computations are obtained for both onshore-dominant and offshore-dominant cases

Effects of the spacer and mixing vanes on critical heat flux for low-pressure water at low-velocities

The effects of spacer grids and mixing vanes on critical heat flux (CHF) have been experimentally investigated for low-pressure water at low, using two different types of test sections: an annulus (19-mm I.D., 33.5-mm O.D., 0.7-m long) and a round tube (10.8-mm I.D. and 0.7-m long). An obstruction-type spacer and a split-vane-type mixing vane were used for the annulus and round tube test sections, respectively. The spacer or mixing vane generally increase the CHF for flow rates higher than a threshold; however, they do not affect or even decrease the CHF under lower flow rates. The major contributing mechanisms would be (a) directing entrained liquid droplets to the heated wall (positive effect) and (b) break-up of the liquid film in annular flow (negative effect)clos

A Harmonic Voltage Injection Based DC-Link Imbalance Compensation Technique for Single-Phase Three-Level Neutral-Point-Clamped (NPC) Inverters

In three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters, the voltage imbalance problem between the upper and lower dc-link capacitors is one of the major concerns. This paper proposed a dc-link capacitor voltage balancing method where a common offset voltage was injected. The offset voltage consists of harmonic components and a voltage difference between the upper and the lower capacitors. Here, both the second-order harmonics and the half-wave of the second-order component were injected to compensate for the unbalanced voltage between the capacitors. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed voltage injection, the theoretical analyses, simulations, and experimental results are provided. Since the proposed method does not require any hardware modifications, it can be easily adapted. Both the simulations and the experiments validated that the voltage difference of the dc-link could be effectively reduced with the proposed method

In a three-level (NPC) converter, the voltage imbalance problem in the DC-link capacitors is major issue. This paper proposes the DC-link capacitor voltage imbalance compensation method, where a common offset voltage is injected for a multi-module NPC inverter. The offset voltage consists of a harmonic voltage and a voltage difference between the upper and lower capacitors. The proposed method does not require any hardware modification, so that it is easily implemented. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed balancing method, theoretical analysis is provided to balance the voltages, and both the simulations and the experiments were carried out to show that the voltage difference of the DC-link was decreased by the proposed method

Major Achievements and Prospect of the ATLAS Integral Effect Tests

A large-scale thermal-hydraulic integral effect test facility, ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation), has been operated by KAERI. The reference plant of ATLAS is the APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor, 1400 MWe). Since 2007, an extensive series of experimental works were successfully carried out, including large break loss of coolant accident tests, small break loss of coolant accident tests at various break locations, steam generator tube rupture tests, feed line break tests, and steam line break tests. These tests contributed toward an understanding of the unique thermal-hydraulic behavior, resolving the safety-related concerns and providing validation data for evaluation of the safety analysis codes and methodology for the advanced pressurized water reactor, APR1400. Major discoveries and lessons found in the past integral effect tests are summarized in this paper. As the demand for integral effect tests is on the rise due to the active national nuclear R&D program in Korea, the future prospects of the application of the ATLAS facility are also discussed
