The Progress of PVDF as a Functional Material for Triboelectric Nanogenerators and Self-Powered Sensors

    Get PDF
Ever since a new energy harvesting technology, known as a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), was reported in 2012, the rapid development of device fabrication techniques and mechanical system designs have considerably made the instantaneous output power increase up to several tens of mW/cm(2). With this innovative technology, a lot of researchers experimentally demonstrated that various portable/wearable devices could be operated without any external power. This article provides a comprehensive review of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based polymers as effective dielectrics in TENGs for further increase of the output power to speed up commercialization of the TENGs, as well as the fundamental issues regarding the materials. In the end, we will also review PVDF-based sensors based on the triboelectric and piezoelectric effects of the PVDF polymers

A new energy generating device, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), was discovered in 2012 and thereafter, many applications such as portable power sources and self-powered, appropriate for portable electronic devices. So far, rapid development of device fabrication technologies and mechanical system designs significantly increased the instantaneous output power up to several tens of mW/cm2. This article provides a comprehensive review of effective dielectrics used so far in TENGs for further enhancement in output power, as well as the fundamental issues regarding the materials. Finally, we show some strategies for obtaining the properties that the materials should have as effective dielectrics.ope

Recommending the Meanings of Newly Coined Words

    Get PDF
AbstractIn this paper, we investigate how to recommend the meanings of newly coined words, such as newly coined named entities and Internet jargon. Our approach automatically chooses a document explaining a given newly coined word among candidate documents from multiple web references using Probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis [1]. Briefly, it involves finding the topic of a document containing the newly coined word and computing the conditional probability of the topic given each candidate document. We validate our methodology with two real datasets from MySpace forums and Twitter by referencing three web services, Google, Urbandictionary, and Wikipedia, and we show that we properly recommend the meanings of a set of given newly coined words with 69.5% and 80.5% accuracies based on our three recommendations, respectively. Moreover, we compare our approach against three baselines where one references the result from each web service and our approach outperforms them

Metal/graphene sheets as p-type transparent conducting electrodes in GaN light emitting diodes

    Get PDF
We demonstrate the use of graphene based transparent sheets as a p-type current spreading layer in GaN light emitting diodes (LEDs). Very thin Ni/Au was inserted between graphene and p-type GaN to reduce contact resistance, which reduced contact resistance from similar to 5.5 to similar to 0.6 Omega/ cm(2), with no critical optical loss. As a result, LEDs with metal-graphene provided current spreading and injection into the p-type GaN layer, enabling three times enhanced electroluminescent intensity compared with those with graphene alone. We confirmed very strong blue light emission in a large area of the metal-graphene layer by analyzing image brightness.open281

CSF Otorrhea Resulting from Osteoradionecrosis of the Temporal Bone in a Patient with Recurrent Meningioma

    Get PDF
Osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone is a very rare but potentially lethal complication of radiotherapy for head and neck or skull base tumors. Only two cases of osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone complicating cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) otorrhea have been reported in the literature. This report describes a case of CSF otorrhea and osteoradionecrosis of the temporal bone in a patient with meningioma who was treated with tympanomastoid surgery and autologous fat obliteration in the mastoid

We investigated the effect of DWac on the gut microbiota composition in mice with 2,3,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid- (TNBS-) induced colitis. Treatment with DWac restored TNBS-disturbed gut microbiota composition and attenuated TNBS-induced colitis. Moreover, we examined the effect of DWac in mice with mesalazine-resistant colitis (MRC). Intrarectal injection of TNBS in MRC mice caused severe colitis, as well as colon shortening, edema, and increased myeloperoxidase activity. Treatment with mesalazine (30 mg/kg) did not attenuate TNBS-induced colitis in MRC mice, whereas treatment with DWac (30 mg/kg) significantly attenuated TNBS-induced colitis. Moreover, treatment with the mixture of mesalazine (15 mg/kg) and DWac (15 mg/kg) additively attenuated colitis in MRC mice. Treatment with DWac and its mixture with mesalazine inhibited TNBS-induced activation of NF-κB and expression of M1 macrophage markers but increased TNBS-suppressed expression of M2 macrophage markers. Furthermore, these inhibited TNBS-induced T-bet, RORγt, TNF-α, and IL-17 expression but increased TNBS-suppressed Foxp3 and IL-10 expression. However, Th2 cell differentiation and GATA3 and IL-5 expression were not affected. These findings suggest that DWac can ameliorate MRC by increasing the polarization of M2 macrophage and correcting the disturbance of gut microbiota and Th1/Th17/Treg, as well as additively attenuating MRC along with mesalazine

Charaterization of 5-aminotetrazole (ATRA) as a corrosion inhibitor in copper chemical mechanical polishing

    Get PDF
In the Cu metallization process, it is important to prevent corrosion and recession of metal lines resulting from chemical reactions during the chemical mechanical polishing CMP process. In this paper, 5-aminotetrazole ATRA is investigated as a corrosion inhibitor for Cu CMP. In the wet etch test, it was found that the etch rate of ATRA decreased with concentration. The potentiodynamic polarization test and chronoamperometry test results revealed that ATRA could inhibit the Cu surface against corrosion more effectively than benzotriazole BTA below 0.01 M. Fourier transform infrared and ultraviolet-visible analysis clearly demonstrated that ATRA dissociated more easily in all pH ranges and could be polymerized faster and more effectively than BTA. Therefore, both corrosion and recession could be considerably reduced after CMP by using slurry containing ATRA. Furthermore, from the results of defect review after CMP, it was found that defects such as slurry residue, pit corrosion, and particles were effectively prevented due to small molecular size and high solubility of ATRA

Alcohol intake and cardiovascular risk factors:A Mendelian randomisation study

    Get PDF
Mendelian randomisation studies from Asia suggest detrimental influences of alcohol on cardiovascular risk factors, but such associations are observed mainly in men. The absence of associations of genetic variants (e.g. rs671 in ALDH2) with such risk factors in women – who drank little in these populations – provides evidence that the observations are not due to genetic pleiotropy. Here, we present a Mendelian randomisation study in a South Korean population (3,365 men and 3,787 women) that 1) provides robust evidence that alcohol consumption adversely affects several cardiovascular disease risk factors, including blood pressure, waist to hip ratio, fasting blood glucose and triglyceride levels. Alcohol also increases HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol. Our study also 2) replicates sex differences in associations which suggests pleiotropy does not underlie the associations, 3) provides further evidence that association is not due to pleiotropy by showing null effects in male non-drinkers, and 4) illustrates a way to measure population-level association where alcohol intake is stratified by sex. In conclusion, population-level instrumental variable estimation (utilizing interaction of rs671 in ALDH2 and sex as an instrument) strengthens causal inference regarding the largely adverse influence of alcohol intake on cardiovascular health in an Asian population
