    Emergency microsurgical embolectomy in acute ischemic stroke with diffusion-negative MRI

    Although diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is highly sensitive and specific for the detection of acute ischemic injury, there are increasing reports that it may fail to demonstrate an acute stroke. Here, we present a case involving an acute ischemic stroke with a false-negative DWI in a 64-year-old woman who had undergone an emergency microsurgical embolectomy for an occluded middle cerebral artery (MCA). Although the endovascular mechanical embolectomy failed in treating the occluded MCA, we were able to successfully treat our patient with the second treatment option of a microsurgical embolectomy. Microsurgical embolectomy might be the treatment of choice, especially if the mechanical catheter is expected to not be able to access the target artery due to tortuous vascular structures

    Bitcoin Double-Spending Attack Detection using Graph Neural Network

    Bitcoin transactions include unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) as their inputs and generate one or more newly owned UTXOs at specified addresses. Each UTXO can only be used as an input in a transaction once, and using it in two or more different transactions is referred to as a double-spending attack. Ultimately, due to the characteristics of the Bitcoin protocol, double-spending is impossible. However, problems may arise when a transaction is considered final even though its finality has not been fully guaranteed in order to achieve fast payment. In this paper, we propose an approach to detecting Bitcoin double-spending attacks using a graph neural network (GNN). This model predicts whether all nodes in the network contain a given payment transaction in their own memory pool (mempool) using information only obtained from some observer nodes in the network. Our experiment shows that the proposed model can detect double-spending with an accuracy of at least 0.95 when more than about 1% of the entire nodes in the network are observer nodes.Comment: 3 pages, 1 table, Accepted as poster at IEEE ICBC 202

    Toward a Standardized Strategy of Clinical Metabolomics for the Advancement of Precision Medicine

    Despite the tremendous success, pitfalls have been observed in every step of a clinical metabolomics workflow, which impedes the internal validity of the study. Furthermore, the demand for logistics, instrumentations, and computational resources for metabolic phenotyping studies has far exceeded our expectations. In this conceptual review, we will cover inclusive barriers of a metabolomics-based clinical study and suggest potential solutions in the hope of enhancing study robustness, usability, and transferability. The importance of quality assurance and quality control procedures is discussed, followed by a practical rule containing five phases, including two additional "pre-pre-" and "post-post-" analytical steps. Besides, we will elucidate the potential involvement of machine learning and demonstrate that the need for automated data mining algorithms to improve the quality of future research is undeniable. Consequently, we propose a comprehensive metabolomics framework, along with an appropriate checklist refined from current guidelines and our previously published assessment, in the attempt to accurately translate achievements in metabolomics into clinical and epidemiological research. Furthermore, the integration of multifaceted multi-omics approaches with metabolomics as the pillar member is in urgent need. When combining with other social or nutritional factors, we can gather complete omics profiles for a particular disease.     Toxic effects of ammonia exposure on growth performance, hematological parameters, and plasma components in rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii, during thermal stress

    Abstract Rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii (mean length 14.53 ± 1.14 cm and mean weight 38.36 ± 3.45 g), were exposed for 4 weeks with the different levels of ammonia in the concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/L at 19 and 24 °C. The indicators of growth performance such as daily length gain, daily weight gain, condition factor, and hematosomatic index were significantly reduced by the ammonia exposure and high temperature. The ammonia exposure induced a significant decrease in hematological parameters, such as red blood cell (RBC) count, white blood cell (WBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Ht), whose trend was more remarkable at 24 °C. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were also notably decreased by the ammonia exposure. Blood ammonia concentration was considerably increased by the ammonia concentration exposure. In the serum components, the glucose, glutamic oxalate transaminase (GOT), and glutamic pyruvate transaminase (GPT) were substantially increased by the ammonia exposure, whereas total protein was significantly decreased. But, the calcium and magnesium were not considerably changed

    A common origin of complex life cycles in parasitic flatworms: evidence from the complete mitochondrial genome of Microcotyle sebastis (Monogenea: Platyhelminthes)

    BACKGROUND: The parasitic Platyhelminthes (Neodermata) contains three parasitic groups of flatworms, each having a unique morphology, and life style: Monogenea (primarily ectoparasitic), Trematoda (endoparasitic flukes), and Cestoda (endoparasitic tapeworms). The evolutionary origin of complex life cyles (multiple obligate hosts, as found in Trematoda and Cestoda) and of endo-/ecto-parasitism in these groups is still under debate and these questions can be resolved, only if the phylogenetic position of the Monogenea within the Neodermata clade is correctly estimated. RESULTS: To test the interrelationships of the major parasitic flatworm groups, we estimated the phylogeny of the Neodermata using complete available mitochondrial genome sequences and a newly characterized sequence of a polyopisthocotylean monogenean Microcotyle sebastis. Comparisons of inferred amino acid sequences and gene arrangement patterns with other published flatworm mtDNAs indicate Monogenea are sister group to a clade of Trematoda+Cestoda. CONCLUSION: Results confirm that vertebrates were the first host for stem group neodermatans and that the addition of a second, invertebrate, host was a single event occurring in the Trematoda+Cestoda lineage. In other words, the move from direct life cycles with one host to complex life cycles with multiple hosts was a single evolutionary event. In association with the evolution of life cycle patterns, our result supports the hypothesis that the most recent common ancestor of the Neodermata giving rise to the Monogenea adopted vertebrate ectoparasitism as its initial life cycle pattern and that the intermediate hosts of the Trematoda (molluscs) and Cestoda (crustaceans) were subsequently added into the endoparasitic life cycles of the Trematoda+Cestoda clade after the common ancestor of these branched off from the monogenean lineage. Complex life cycles, involving one or more intermediate hosts, arose through the addition of intermediate hosts and not the addition of a vertebrate definitive host. Additional evidence is required from monopisthocotylean monogeneans in order to confirm the monophyly of the group

    Laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy for early gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone with situs inversus totalis: a case report

    We report our case of laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy with D1 + β lymph node dissection for a patient with early gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallstone with situs inversus totalis. A superficial elevated lesion was found on the lesser curvature of the antrum. The preoperative diagnosis was cStage IA (cT1, cN0, cH0, cP0, cM0). A 1 cm-sized gallstone was found in the fundus through upper abdominal ultrasound. A laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy with standard D2 lymph node dissection for early gastric cancer and laparoscopic cholecystectomy was successfully performed by not shifting the monitor to the left and right and not changing operator's position without additional blood loss and time. The number of retrieved lymph nodes was 36. We have not found any abnormal course of blood vessels except for the right/left inversion. Billroth I reconstruction was performed through end-to-side anastomosis. Based on a histopathological examination, a 1.5 × 1.5 cm, submucosal (sm3), moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma (pT1, pN0, sH0, sP0, sM0, stage IA) was diagnosed. The postoperative course was favorable and the patient was discharged on postoperative day 7
