    Doing nothing? Dynamics of waiting among ageing internally displaced Cameroonians during the anglophone crisis

    Waiting is often perceived as an inactive or static period and is mostly linked to a hope for a better future among youth. This paper pays special attention to older internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Cameroon and how they use their experiences, knowledge, and capabilities to create new livelihoods as they ‘wait’ to return to their original homes. Specifically, the paper elucidates how ‘aged’ care for family members, create new jobs, do old jobs in a new manner, or ‘do nothing’ at all. Special attention is paid to the reconfiguration of family life and relationships, as well as to gender roles and shifting (in)dependencies. This paper goes beyond the notion of older people as vulnerable, inactive or frail, and highlights that work and activity at an older age generate new forms of mobility, resources and new ideas about the future. Drawing on ethnographic research among internally displaced families in Bafoussam, the Francophone capital of the West region of Cameroon, this paper illustrates that the condition of ‘waiting’ is productively and actively shaped by Anglophone IDPs who dynamically combine practices of the past with their present status, as well as notions about their still-uncertain future

    Spectral observations of X Persei: Connection between H-alpha and X-ray emission

    We present spectroscopic observations of the Be/X-ray binary X Per obtained during the period 1999 - 2018. Using new and published data, we found that during "disc-rise" the expansion velocity of the circumstellar disc is 0.4 - 0.7 km/s. Our results suggest that the disc radius in recent decades show evidence of resonant truncation of the disc by resonances 10:1, 3:1, and 2:1, while the maximum disc size is larger than the Roche lobe of the primary and smaller than the closest approach of the neutron star. We find correlation between equivalent width of H-alpha emission line (WαW\alpha) and the X-ray flux, which is visible when 15 A˚ <Wα≤40 A˚15 \: \AA \: < W\alpha \le 40 \: \AA. The correlation is probably due to wind Roche lobe overflow.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic

    Cluster virial expansion for nuclear matter within a quasiparticle statistical approach

    Correlations in interacting many-particle systems can lead to the formation of clusters, in particular bound states and resonances. Systematic quantum statistical approaches allow to combine the nuclear statistical equilibrium description (law of mass action) with mean-field concepts. A chemical picture, which treats the clusters as distinct entities, serves as an intuitive concept to treat the low-density limit. Within a generalized Beth-Uhlenbeck approach, the quasiparticle virial expansion is extended to include arbitrary clusters, where special attention must be paid to avoid inconsistencies such as double counting. Correlations are suppressed with increasing density due to Pauli blocking. The contribution of the continuum to the virial coefficients can be reduced by considering clusters explicitly and introducing quasiparticle energies. The cluster-virial expansion for nuclear matter joins known benchmarks at low densities with those near saturation density.Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Coupling of frustrated Ising spins to magnetic cycloid in multiferroic TbMnO3

    We report on diffraction measurements on multiferroic TbMnO3 which demonstrate that the Tb- and Mn-magnetic orders are coupled below the ferroelectric transition TFE = 28 K. For T < TFE the magnetic propagation vectors (tau) for Tb and Mn are locked so that tauTb = tauMn, while below TNTb = 7 K we find that tauTb and tauMn lock-in to rational values of 3/7 b* and 2/7 b*, respectively, and obey the relation 3tauTb - tauMn = 1. We explain this novel matching of wave vectors within the frustrated ANNNI model coupled to a periodic external field produced by the Mn-spin order. The tauTb = tauMn behavior is recovered when Tb magnetization is small, while the tauTb = 3/7 regime is stabilized at low temperatures by a peculiar arrangement of domain walls in the ordered state of Ising-like Tb spins.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Transition from a phase-segregated state to single-phase incommensurate sodium ordering in Na_xCoO_2 with x \approx 0.53

    Synchrotron X-ray diffraction investigations of two single crystals of Na_xCoO_2 from different batches with composition x = 0.525-0.530 reveal homogeneous incommensurate sodium ordering with propagation vector (0.53 0.53 0) at room-temperature. The incommensurate (qq0) superstructure exists between 220 K and 430 K. The value of q varies between q = 0.514 and 0.529, showing a broad plateau at the latter value between 260 K and 360 K. On cooling, unusual reversible phase segregation into two volume fractions is observed. Below 220 K, one volume fraction shows the well-known commensurate orthorhombic x = 0.50 superstructure, while a second volume fraction with x = 0.55 exhibits another commensurate superstructure, presumably with a 6a x 6a x c hexagonal supercell. We argue that the commensurate-to-incommensurate transition is an intrinsic feature of samples with Na concentrations x = 0.5 + d with d ~ 0.03.Comment: Corrected/improved versio

    Determining ethylene group disorder levels in κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu[N(CN)2_2]Br

    We present a detailed structural investigation of the organic superconductor κ\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2Cu[N(CN)2_2]Br at temperatures TT from 9 to 300 K. Anomalies in the TT dependence of the lattice parameters are associated with a glass-like transition previously reported at TgT_g = 77 K. From structure refinements at 9, 100 and 300 K, the orthorhombic crystalline symmetry, space group {\it Pnma}, is established at all temperatures. Further, we extract the TT dependence of the occupation factor of the eclipsed conformation of the terminal ethylene groups of the BEDT-TTF molecule. At 300 K, we find 67(2) %, with an increase to 97(3) % at 9 K. We conclude that the glass-like transition is not primarily caused by configurational freezing-out of the ethylene groups

    Spatial structure of Mn-Mn acceptor pairs in GaAs

    The local density of states of Mn-Mn pairs in GaAs is mapped with cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy and compared with theoretical calculations based on envelope-function and tight-binding models. These measurements and calculations show that the crosslike shape of the Mn-acceptor wavefunction in GaAs persists even at very short Mn-Mn spatial separations. The resilience of the Mn-acceptor wave-function to high doping levels suggests that ferromagnetism in GaMnAs is strongly influenced by impurity-band formation. The envelope-function and tight-binding models predict similarly anisotropic overlaps of the Mn wave-functions for Mn-Mn pairs. This anisotropy implies differing Curie temperatures for Mn δ\delta-doped layers grown on differently oriented substrates.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Ga substitution as an effective variation of Mn-Tb coupling in multiferroic TbMnO3

    Ga for Mn substitution in multiferroic TbMnO3_{3} has been performed in order to study the influence of Mn-magnetic ordering on the Tb-magnetic sublattice. Complete characterization of TbMn1−x_{1-x}Gax_xO3_{3} (xx = 0, 0.04, 0.1) samples, including magnetization, impedance spectroscopy, and x-ray resonant scattering and neutron diffraction on powder and single crystals has been carried out. We found that keeping the same crystal structure for all compositions, Ga for Mn substitution leads to the linear decrease of TNMnT_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn} and τMn\tau^{\rm Mn}, reflecting the reduction of the exchange interactions strength JMn−MnJ_{\rm Mn-Mn} and the change of the Mn-O-Mn bond angles. At the same time, a strong suppression of both the induced and the separate Tb-magnetic ordering has been observed. This behavior unambiguously prove that the exchange fields JMn−TbJ_{\rm Mn-Tb} have a strong influence on the Tb-magnetic ordering in the full temperature range below TNMnT_{\rm N}^{\rm Mn} and actually stabilize the Tb-magnetic ground state.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
