    A Community Grief Support Program for Children a Needs Assessment

    The purpose of this study was to explore the need for a community grief support program for children, Nineteen professionals who work directly with children participated in this study. Data were collected utilizing an interview with a closed- and open-ended item questionnaire. Among the topics discussed were knowledge of existing grief support services, interventions to facilitate a child\u27s adjustment to death and the need for a grief support program for children Findings indicated all of those who participated in the study felt a grief support program for children was needed. Participants provided useful information for the development of future programs. Several interventions that may have an impact on a child\u27s adjustment to loss were recommended by the participants and throughout the literature Adults educated and knowledgeable about grief and child development were indicated as a key factor in assisting grieving children. This study will provide social workers, community professionals and families with information about the needs of grieving children and the need for additional supportive programs

    The research program to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of producing solar-cell-quality sheet silicon by dip-coating one surface of carbonized ceramic substrates with a thin layer of large-grain polycrystalline silicon is reported. The initial effort concentrated on the design and construction of the experimental dip-coating facility. The design was completed and its experimental features are discussed. Current status of the program is reported, including progress toward solar cell junction diffusion and miscellaneous ceramic substrate procurement

    To date, an experimental dip-coating facility was constructed. Using this facility, relatively thin (1 mm) mullite and alumina substrates were successfully dip-coated with 2.5 - 3.0 ohm-cm, p-type silicon with areas of approximately 20 sq cm. The thickness and grain size of these coatings are influenced by the temperature of the melt and the rate at which the substrate is pulled from the melt. One mullite substrate had dendrite-like crystallites of the order of 1 mm wide and 1 to 2 cm long. Their axes were aligned along the direction of pulling. A large variety of substrate materials were purchased or developed enabling the program to commence a substrate definition evaluation. Due to the insulating nature of the substrate, the bottom layer of the p-n junction may have to be made via the top surface. The feasibility of accomplishing this was demonstrated using single crystal wafers

    The technical and economic feasibility of producing solar cell quality sheet silicon by dip-coating one surface of carbonized ceramic substrates with a thin layer of large grain polycrystalline silicon was investigated. The dip-coating methods studied were directed toward a minimum cost process with the ultimate objective of producing solar cells with a conversion efficiency of 10% or greater. The technique shows excellent promise for low cost, labor-saving, scale-up potentialities and would provide an end product of sheet silicon with a rigid and strong supportive backing. An experimental dip-coating facility was designed and constructed, several substrates were successfully dip-coated with areas as large as 25 sq cm and thicknesses of 12 micron to 250 micron. There appears to be no serious limitation on the area of a substrate that could be coated. Of the various substrate materials dip-coated, mullite appears to best satisfy the requirement of the program. An inexpensive process was developed for producing mullite in the desired geometry

    The location of the primary entry tear in acute type B aortic dissection affects early outcome†

    OBJECTIVES The goal of the retrospective study was to relate the site of the primary entry tear in acute type B aortic dissections to the presence or development of complications. METHODS A consecutive series of 52 patients referred with acute type B aortic dissection was analysed with regard to the location of the primary entry tear (convexity or concavity of the distal aortic arch) using the referral CT scans at the time of diagnosis. These findings were related to the clinical outcome as well as to the need for intervention. RESULTS Twenty-five patients (48%) had the primary entry tear located at the convexity of the distal aortic arch, whereas 27 patients (52%) had the primary entry tear located at the concavity of the distal aortic arch. Twenty per cent of patients with the primary entry tear at the convexity presented with or developed complications, whereas 89% had or developed complications with the primary entry tear at the concavity (P<0.001). Furthermore, in patients with complicated type B aortic dissection, the distance of the primary entry tear to the left subclavian artery was significantly shorter as in uncomplicated patients (8 vs. 21mm; P=0.002). In Cox regression analysis, a primary entry tear at the concavity of the distal aortic arch was identified as an independent predictor of the presence or the development of complicated type B aortic dissection. CONCLUSIONS A primary entry tear at the concavity of the aortic arch as well as a short distance between the primary entry tear and the left subclavian artery are frequently associated with the presence or the development of complicated acute type B aortic dissection. These findings shall help us to further differentiate acute type B aortic dissections in addition to the common categorization in complicated and uncomplicated.
