Early intervention services: Effectively supporting Maori children and their families

    Get PDF
This paper examines Early Intervention (EI) service provision from within one Ministry of Education region in New Zealand. It does this in order to better understand what works well and what needs to change if children from Maori families, of Early Childhood age, are to be provided with the most effective EI services. By engaging with Maori families in group-focused interviews-asconversation, and then with their service providers, about their experiences of working together, researchers learned about what could provide effective services for other Maori families in similar situations

Analysis of stratified and closely spaced jets exhausting into a crossflow

Procedures have been developed for determining the flow field about jets with velocity stratification exhausting into a crossflow. Jets with three different types of exit velocity stratification have been considered: (1) jets with a relatively high velocity core; (2) jets with a relatively low velocity core; and (3) jets originating from a vaned nozzle. The procedure developed for a jet originating from a high velocity core nozzle is to construct an equivalent nozzle having the same mass flow and thrust but having a uniform exit velocity profile. Calculations of the jet centerline and induced surface static pressures have been shown to be in good agreement with test data for a high velocity core nozzle. The equivalent ideal nozzle has also been shown to be a good representation for jets with a relatively low velocity core and for jets originating from a vaned nozzle in evaluating jet-induced flow fields. For the singular case of a low velocity core nozzle, namely a nozzle with a dead air core, and for the vaned nozzle, an alternative procedure has been developed. The internal mixing which takes place in the jet core has been properly accounted for in the equations of motion governing the jet development. Calculations of jet centerlines and induced surface static pressures show good agreement with test data these nozzles

Responsive socio-cultural contexts: Supporting five year olds to become literate in a second language.

Learning one's own indigenous language and culture as a second language learner within formal mainstream education settings can pose many challenges, especially for students who have been raised in the dominant first language and who are just beginning school. This paper discusses a Māori language resource used by a Māori immersion teacher to respond to these challenges. This resource utilises community support to develop students' phonological awareness while simultaneously increasing their oral language. This study shows that within a relatively short period of time, students' phonological knowledge improved along with their confidence and ability to speak in Māori. With these skills they were then able to progress more successfully to becoming literate in Māori, their second language

Search for sources of gamma radiation

This thesis documents the application of a metaheuristic algorithm GLNS on practical task - search for sources of gamma radiation. An individual source of radiation can be precisely located by a robot carrying a detector if it passes nearby through a trajectory segment, represented by a circular arc. As there can be more than one potential source of radiation and there are many valid arcs for each of them, the trajectory planning task can be after discretization formulated as Generalized Traveling Salesman Problem with m sets (sources) and n vertices (arcs), partitioned into these m sets. The goal is to find a tour, that visits each set exactly once and has a minimum length. For this purpose, an adaptive large neighborhood search algorithm GLNS is modified and implemented. Additionally, the planner is adapted to plan with cubic curves with predefined minimal curvature as edges, and a procedure for fast estimation of their weights is presented. Moreover, we propose a new intensification procedure called DenseOpt, which serves to improve the quality of the solution obtained from the discrete planner by performing a local search in the continuous space

Conservative Management Of A Complete Rupture Of The Long Head Of The Biceps: A Case Report

    Get PDF
Background/Purpose: The long head of the biceps plays an important role stabilizing the shoulder. Most of the current literature supports surgical intervention following a complete rupture, but there is little evidence that supports conservative management. Due to a lack of evidence supporting conservative management of a complete rupture of the long head of the biceps, the purpose of this case study was to evaluate the progress this patient made over a six-week period with outpatient physical therapy addressing his impairments resulting from his injury. Case Description: The patient was a 51-year-old male with a confirmed diagnosis of a complete rupture of the long head of his biceps. The initial evaluation took place two and a half months after the accident due to a delay in seeking medical attention. He had a decreased ROM and strength, increased pain levels that effected his work, and an impaired QuickDASH score. Outcomes: After six weeks of conservative treatment, the patient had an increase in ROM, improved QuickDASH score, and reported a decrease in pain and increase in work capacity. Discussion: Despite the long duration between onset of injury and physical therapy, the patient appeared to benefit from conservative management based on objective findings and patient reported results
