    Considerations of the Impacts and System-level Mitigation of Electric Vehicle Charging on the Integrated Resource Planning Process

    Electric vehicles (EV) are growing in popularity and therefore adoption rate. Best estimates predict a 6.2% EV adoption rate by 2035 in the southeastern United States. With this level of EV adoption, utility planners must begin to consider the impact that EVs will have on the power grid. This paper aims to help predict these EV impacts on the power grid. Specifically, an urban-commercial feeder is analyzed in detail to provide worst-case and most-likely results of varying levels of EV impact. Results show that a 26.2% peak increase is the most likely result for this feeder in 2035. Mitigation techniques are used to lower the impact that EVs will have on the power grid. A number of mitigation techniques are specifically analyzed for this urban-commercial feeder. The cost of each of these mitigation techniques is compared to their effectiveness. The best mitigation strategy is chosen to be a combination of time-of-use and a battery energy storage system because it gives the best results relative to cost and provides emergency capabilities. In this study, system data is extracted from this urban-commercial feeder and combined with other feeder types to provide a utility scale EV impact. The scale-up model provides the most-likely scenario for future EV impacts on the entire utility’s power grid. This system level scale-up data can be used for integrated resource planning purposes

    Reverse Engineering of Foreign Missiles via Genetic Algorithm

    One mission of the National Air Intelligence Center (NAIC) is the reverse engineering of foreign missile weapon systems from incomplete observational data. In the past, intuition and repeated runs of a missile performance model were required to converge to a solution compatible with observed flight characteristics. This approach can be cumbersome and time consuming, as well as being subject to undesirable influences from the analyst\u27s preconceptions and biases. An alternative approach has been created to apply genetic algorithm (GA) techniques to allow automation of the process, wider exploration of the design space, and more optimal solutions matching the observational data. The GA, when interfaced with a missile performance model, was able to identify a set of missiles that very closely matched the observed performance of a given sample missile. The approach was able to provide the analyst with multiple candidate missiles for further analysis that would have been missed by the previous trial and error approach

    Properties of crystalline bismuth selenide and its use as a Hall effect magnetometer

    Single crystals of n-type Bi2Se3 grown by the Bridgman technique are found to make excellent Hall effect magnetometers. Plots of Hall resistivity sub yx against magnetic field B to 10 tesla are linear to within 1 percent. Furthermore, the slope of the sub yx against B curve varies by about 1 percent in the region 1.1 to 35 K and by less than 20 percent in the region 1.1 to 300 K. Analysis of galvanomagnetic measurements indicate the samples have semimetallic densities of approximately 10 to the 25th power/cu cm, with two band conduction and near carrier compensation. Reflectivity measurements suggest a band gap of approximately 0.08 eV for the samples. The temperature dependence of mobility is also measured. A series of 50 direct immersions into liquid helium and liquid nitrogen demonstrate the reliability of Bi2Se3 magnetometers for cryogenic use

    Magnetic field generated resistivity maximum in graphite

    In zero magnetic field, B, the electrical resistivity, rho(O,T) of highly oriented pyrolytic (polycrystalline) graphite drops smoothly with decreasing T, becoming constant below 4 K. However, in a fixed applied magnetic field B, the resistivity rho(B,T) goes through a maximum as a function of T, with larger maximum for larger B. The temperature of the maximum increases with B, but saturates to a constant value near 25 K (exact T depends on sample) at high B. In single crystal graphite a maximum in rho(B,T) as a function of T is also present, but has the effects of Landau level quantization superimposed. Several possible explanations for the rho(B,T) maximum are proposed, but a complete explanation awaits detailed calculations involving the energy band structure of graphite, and the particular scattering mechanisms involved

    Intermodulation Analysis of Class C Transistorized Amplifiers with Applications to V.H.F. Amplifiers

    The paper discusses the theoretical analysis and the experimental work done to describe the cause of intermodulation distortion in class C transistorized amplifiers. A mathematical basis for the intermodulation was derived using a single frequency input and a second frequency introduced into the output of the amplifier. It was followed by experimental work performed to justify the theory. These experiments used both pulsed and sinusoidal drives as amplifier inputs. Also, a feedback method along with the transistor\u27s operating point was shown to reduce the intermodulation distortion produced by the amplifier. Finally, a short discussion on the results and some of the applications of this research to V.H.F. amplifiers was presented
