Search for young stars among ROSAT All-Sky Survey X-ray sources in and around the R CrA dark cloud
We present the ROSAT All-Sky Survey data in a 126 deg^2 area in and around
the CrA star forming region. With low-resolution spectroscopy of unidentified
ROSAT sources we could find 19 new pre-main sequence stars, two of which are
classical T Tauri stars, the others being weak-lined. The spectral types of
these new T Tauri stars range from F7 to M6. The two new classical T Tauri
stars are located towards two small cloud-lets outside of the main CrA cloud.
They appear to be ~10 Myrs old, by comparing their location in the H-R diagram
with isochrones for an assumed distance of 130 pc, the distance of the main CrA
dark cloud. The new off-cloud weak-line T Tauri stars may have formed in
similar cloud-lets, which have dispersed recently. High-resolution spectra of
our new T Tauri stars show that they have significantly more lithium absorption
than zero-age main-sequence stars of the same spectral type, so that they are
indeed young. From those spectra we also obtained rotational and radial
velocities. For some stars we found the proper motion in published catalogs.
The direction and velocity of the 3D space motion - south relative to the
galatic plane - of the CrA T Tauri stars is consistent with the dark cloud
being formed originally by a high-velocity cloud impact onto the galactic
plane, which triggered the star formation in CrA. We also present VRIJHK
photometry for most of the new T Tauri stars to derive their luminosities,

The Search for Low-mass Companions of B Stars in the Carina Nebula Cluster Trumpler 16
We have developed lists of likely B3--A0 stars (called "late B" stars) in the
young cluster Trumpler 16. The following criteria were used: location within 3'
of Eta Car, an appropriate V and B-V combination, and proper motion (where
available). Color and magnitude cuts have been made assuming an E(B-V) =0.55
mag +/- 0.1, which is a good approximation close to the center of Trumpler 16.
These lists have been cross-correlated with X-ray sources found in the Chandra
Carina Complex Project (CCCP). Previous studies have shown that only very
rarely (if at all) do late main sequence B stars produce X-rays. We present
evidence that the X-ray detected sources are binaries with low-mass companions,
since stars less massive than 1.4 Msun are strong X-ray sources at the age of
the cluster. Both the median X-ray energies and X-ray luminosities of these
sources are in good agreement with values for typical low-mass coronal X-ray
sources. We find that 39% of the late B stars based on a list with proper
motions have low-mass companions. Similarly, 32% of a sample without proper
motions have low-mass companions. We discuss the X-ray detection completeness.
These results on low-mass companions of intermediate mass stars are
complementary to spectroscopic and interferometric results, and probe new
parameter space of low mass companions at all separations. They do not support
a steeply rising distribution of mass ratios to low masses for
intermediate-mass (5 Msun) primaries, such as would be found by random pairing

X-rays Studies of the Solar System
X-ray observatories contribute fundamental advances in Solar System studies
by probing Sun-object interactions, developing planet and satellite surface
composition maps, probing global magnetospheric dynamics, and tracking
astrochemical reactions. Despite these crucial results, the technological
limitations of current X-ray instruments hinder the overall scope and impact
for broader scientific application of X-ray observations both now and in the
coming decade. Implementation of modern advances in X-ray optics will provide
improvements in effective area, spatial resolution, and spectral resolution for
future instruments. These improvements will usher in a truly transformative era

Carina OB Stars: X-ray Signatures of Wind Shocks and Magnetic Fields
The Chandra Carina Complex contains 200 known O- and B type stars. The
Chandra survey detected 68 of the 70 O stars and 61 of 127 known B0-B3 stars.
We have assembled a publicly available optical/X-ray database to identify OB
stars that depart from the canonical Lx/Lbol relation, or whose average X-ray
temperatures exceed 1 keV. Among the single O stars with high kT we identify
two candidate magnetically confined wind shock sources: Tr16-22, O8.5 V, and LS
1865, O8.5 V((f)). The O4 III(fc) star HD 93250 exhibits strong, hard, variable
X-rays, suggesting it may be a massive binary with a period of >30 days. The
visual O2 If* binary HD 93129A shows soft 0.6 keV and hard 1.9 keV emission
components, suggesting embedded wind shocks close to the O2 If* Aa primary, and
colliding wind shocks between Aa and Ab. Of the 11 known O-type spectroscopic
binaries, the long orbital-period systems HD 93343, HD 93403 and QZ Car have
higher shock temperatures than short-period systems such as HD 93205 and FO 15.
Although the X-rays from most B stars may be produced in the coronae of unseen,
low-mass pre-main-sequence companions, a dozen B stars with high Lx cannot be
explained by a distribution of unseen companions. One of these, SS73 24 in the
Treasure Chest cluster, is a new candidate Herbig Be star.Comment: To be published in a special issue of the Astrophysical Journal

Evaluation of Staphylococcus aureus Nasal Carriage Screening before Vascular Surgery
INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is the most important pathogen in the development of surgical site infections (SSI). Patients who carry S. aureus in the nose are at increased risk for the development of SSI in cardiothoracic and orthopedic surgery. In these populations it has been shown that the risk for SSI can be substantially reduced by eradicating S. aureus carriage. For vascular surgery the relation between nasal carriage and surgical site infections has not been clearly investigated. For this reason we performed this study to analyze the relation between S. aureus nasal carriage and SSI in our vascular surgery population. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was undertaken, including all patients undergoing vascular surgery between January first 2010 and December 31th 2010. Before surgery patients were screened for S. aureus nasal carriage using a PCR technique. The presence of SSI was recorded based on criteria of the CDC. RESULTS: Screening was performed in 224. Of those, 55 (24.5%) were positive, 159 (71.0%) were negative and 10 (4.5%) were inconclusive. In the screened vascular population 4 S. aureus SSI occurred in the 55 carriers compared with 6 in 159 non-carriers (p=0.24). A stratified analysis revealed a 10-fold increased risk in nasal carriers undergoing central reconstruction surgery (3 S. aureus SSI in 20 procedures versus 1 in 65 procedures in non-carriers, p=0.039). DISCUSSION: In patients undergoing central reconstruction surgery nasals carriers are at increased risk for the development of S. aureus SSI.
