Social work in the psychiatric unit of a general hospital. An analysis of function.

A dissertation presented to the department of Sociology and Social Work in fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. The score of the study encompasses primarily the day-to-day activities of the social worker with both patients and staff members. While the greater part of the dissertation will relate to this aspect of the work carried on, mention will be made in the latter part of the study to those functions which are regarded by Berkman as "facilitating" services to the patient, namely, teaching, supervision, recording, and community relations. Also, some attention will be paid to issues, as they arise, which are of special or controversial interest in the field.WHSLYP201

In this note we discuss some generalisations of the Hales-Jewett theorem. We shall show the impossibility of some generalisations of the Hales-Jewett theorem to the infinity

Courage and Knowledge at Protagoras 349E1-351B2

At Protagoras 349E1-350C5 Socrates argues for the identity of courage and knowledge, and at 350C6- 351B2 Protagoras objects to Socrates’ argument. Between 1961 and 1985, a few valuable contributions in English were made to the interpretation of these passages. None, however, is entirely satisfactory. And in the last twenty years, among some cursory treatments in studies not particularly focused on these passages, no notable progress has been made. The objective of this paper is to present a more satisfactory interpretation of Socrates’ argument and Protagoras’ objection, in particular by engaging with a set of problems with which previous commentators have wrestled. Above all, I will be concerned with Taylor’s examination of these problems since his contribution remains the most thorough and well known in English. The upshot of my discussion is that both Socrates’ argument and Protagoras’ response are more cogent than has been recognized. Indeed, Protagoras suggests a good reason to believe that Socrates’ argument fails to identify courage and knowledge. This also explains Socrates’ development of a second argument for the identity of courage and knowledge (351B-360E). In clarifying the hermeneutic problems in Socrates’ first argument and Protagoras’ objection, it will be convenient to begin with a basic outline of Socrates’ argument. The actual complexities of the argument will be clarified in the course of the ensuing discussion. (1) Courageous men are confident. (2) Courage, qua part of excellence, is fine. (3) Knowledgeable men are confident. (4) Some without knowledge are confident. (5) Ignorant confidence is base. (6) Therefore, courage is knowledge. According to this description, Socrates attempts to identify courage and knowledge on the grounds that both are fine confidence. Collectively, commentators have drawn attention to three serious problems with the argument. I will introduce and resolve each in turn

Shade Equity in Louisville, KY: Considering Environmental Justice in an Analysis of Urban Tree Canopy Inequality and Demographics

    Get PDF
As cities builds climate resilience and foster equity, tree planting is a priority solution. Urban tree canopy (UTC) provides multiple crucial ecosystem services, like shade, and mitigates the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI). This research looks at Louisville, KY as a case study for tree canopy disparity, observing inequality in the relationship between tree canopy and demographics, as well as the unevenness in the canopy change over time. This study uses spatial analysis in ArcGIS Pro to investigate the unevenness in the tree canopy gains or losses from 2012-2019 and to compare tree canopy to seven different demographic groups that are historically marginalized or are vulnerable to extreme heat. A disparity index model was followed to produce values and maps indicative of tree canopy inequality for all 587 census block groups. For the analyses of change over time and disparity between demographics and tree canopy, there are many block groups that have disproportionately low tree cover, or are losing tree cover more than others, indicating both inequity and more vulnerability to extreme heat

Leucocyte Function in Protein Deficiency States

Seventy-five patients, comprising 3 groups of 25 normal infants (group I), 25 infants suffering from protein energy malnutrition (PEM-kwashiorkor) (group 11) and 25 infants with PEM plus infection (group Ill) were .axamined, with particular reference to their total leucocyte count and the response of their white cells to incubation with nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT), with and without latex particle stimulation. No difference in leucocyte counts could be demonstrated between the groups; however, both groups of malnourished patients (groups ll and lll) had elevated NBT levels, although no difference could be detected between those malnourished infants with and without clinical or laboratory evidence of infection, or both. The data indicate that although primarily protein-deficient malnourished patients have a quantitative deficiency in leucocyte response, qualitative leucocyte function may be normal. S. Afr. Med. Another Look at Cord Blood Proteins - Changes with the birth weight and as a predictor of Hyaline membrane disease in neonates

The total cord protein (TCP) and albumin levels of 287 Black babies (155 term and 132 low birthweight) were measured, related to birthweight, and compared with international figures, in order to clarify previously published inconclusive data. An assessment was also made as to whether a previously published level of 4,6 g/100 ml TCP or less, proved of good predictive value to the development of hyaline membrane disease (HMD) in Black babies. TCP levels, as measured by a chemical and meter method, were noted, and the accuracy of the methods compared and statistically evaluated
