Factors that may have been decisive in turning Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden into a successful establishment of botanical teaching and a garden devoted to the conservation and showcasing of the native California flora are put forward. In addition to the enthusiasm and tenacity of its founder, Susanna Bixby Bryant, inspiration and advice came from several other key figures, notably Carl Brandt Wolf, Ernest Braunton, Willis Linn Jepson, and Theodore Payne

Wolf-Rayet Stars in Starburst Galaxies

Wolf-Rayet stars have been detected in a large number of galaxies experiencing intense bursts of star formation. All stars initially more massive than a certain, metallicity-dependent, value are believed to experience the Wolf-Rayet phase at the end of their evolution, just before collapsing in supernova explosion. The detection of Wolf-Rayet stars puts therefore important constraints on the evolutionary status of starbursts, the properties of their Initial Mass Functions and their star formation regime. Did Philologists write the Iliad? : Friedrich August Wolf's criteria of style and the demonstrative power of citation

Friedrich August Wolf posits in his "Prolegomena ad Homerum" that, from the time of the first transcription of Homer's epics around 700 BC to the time of the Alexandrian editions, the Iliad and Odyssey underwent repeated revisions by a multitude of poets and critics. According to Wolf, the "unified" works that we know are the products of emendations by Alexandrian critics who attempted to homogenize the style of the epics and to return them to their "original" form. This paper argues that Wolf's narration of the history of these texts relies on and produces aesthetic claims, not historical ones. Wolf determines the dates and origins of passages based on intuitive judgments of style for which he cannot provide linguistic or historical evidence. And his conclusions that the "Iliad" and "Odyssey" were not written by Homer, but rather by a history of emendations and revisions, enthrones his work — the work of philologists — in place of the literary genius Homer. Thus philology becomes for Wolf an aesthetic discipline that produces canonical and beautiful works of literature. This aesthetic task is essential for philology to fulfill its educational and political responsibilities

Detecting planets in protoplanetary disks: A prospective study

We investigate the possibility to find evidence for planets in circumstellar disks by infrared and submillimeter interferometry. We present simulations of a circumstellar disk around a solar-type star with an embedded planet of 1 Jupiter mass. The three-dimensional (3D) density structure of the disk results from hydrodynamical simulations. On the basis of 3D radiative transfer simulations, images of this system were calculated. The intensity maps provide the basis for the simulation of the interferometers VLTI (equipped with the mid-infrared instrument MIDI) and ALMA. While MIDI/VLTI will not provide the possibility to distinguish between disks with or without a gap on the basis of visibility measurements, ALMA will provide the necessary basis for a direct gap detection.Comment: 5 page

Inter-W Bose-Einstein Correlations ... or Not?

A critical summary is given of the present status of the study of Bose-Einstein Correlations in W-pair production at LEP II. In particular, the evidence is reviewed for or against the existence of Bose-Einstein correlations between pions originating both from a different of the two W's. If present, such an inter-W interference would not only form a potential bias in the determination of the W mass, but also would provide a laboratory to measure the space-time development of the overlap. When Rudyard Kipling wrote The Jungle Book in 1894 and included the famous line For the strength of the Wolf is the Pack, and the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, he would have had no idea that over a century later, scientific research would back up his poetic phrase. Recent studies in Yellowstone have found that both the individual wolf and the collective pack rely on each other and play important roles in territoriality. At a time when most fairy tales and fables were portraying wolves as demonic killers or, at best, slapstick gluttons, Kipling seemed to have a respect or even reverence for the wolf. Wolves in The Jungle Book raise and mentor the main character Mowgli, with the pack\u27s leader eventually dying to save the man-cub from a pack of wolves. Kipling may have extended intra-pack benevolence to a human boy for literary sake, but he was clearly enthralled with how pack members treat each other. As wolf packs are almost always family units, most commonly comprised of a breeding pair and their offspring from several years, amiable behavior within the pack is unsurprising. By contrast, wolf packs are fiercely intolerant of their neighbors, their rivals. And this competition is proving to be an important facet in the life of a wolf and its pack
