Sport Mega Events and the Need for Critical Sociological Research: the Case of Euro 2012

Euro 2012 was the first Sport Mega Event held in Poland. It has been presented in public discourse in Poland as unprecedented opportunity for modernization and unquestionable success. However, looking at a multitude of data concerning the political, economic and social consequences of the event, allows putting these opinions into question. The paper discusses these topics using the numbers and information from various resources, considering also uncritical support of political circles and mainstream media for the idea of hosting Euro 2012, as well as lack of critical scrutiny of academic circles into the real costs of the event

Top level actors speak about social policy and intergenerational inheritance of inequalities

The article has been divided into two parts. In the irst one the author presents dominant trends of the contemporary academic discourse over the European social policy, in the context of progressive europeization in this ield as well and on the level of comparative research. The second part of the article depicts results of studies led among central level politicians (members of parliament, members of government) conducted by each national research team within the framework of the PROFIT project. The starting point of the research was the assumption that the way politicians contextualize the problem of social inequalities inheritance and politicians’ opinions about the phenomenon of IIofI can considerably inluence the mode state’s priorities concerning social policy are being formulated

Kultura a polityka społeczna. O skomplikowanych współzależnościach i potrzebie ich badania

The article discusses the topic of culture and its interrelation with social policy. Basing on important contributions of Baldock, van Oorschot and Pfau-Effinger, it attempts to present the significance of a wide cultural context for the welfare state and at the same time a relative negligence of this cultural context in academic social policy. The main part of the article is the presentation of the contextualization of the above mentioned issues as proposed by Birgit Pfau-Effinger who outlined the concepts of welfare culture and welfare arrangements. The aim of this paper is to explore the topic of intergenerational inheritance of inequalities and its presence in political debate. The first section examines the transmission of inequality as a structural feature of contemporary societies, summarizing briefly the sociological research in the field. Next, it is discussed how this issue is approached by political ideologies. Dziecko, rodzina i państwo w polskiej debacie welfare. Analiza przypadku w perspektywie paniki moralnej

W artykule zawarto analizę dyskursu publicznego w Polsce dotyczącego relacji między prawami dzieci i rodzin a działaniami państwa, które poprzez systemy prawny i legislację stara się zapewnić przestrzeganie zdefiniowanych w aktach prawnych norm i wyznawanych wartości. Teoretyczną ramę analiz stanowi koncepcja paniki moralnej, często aplikowana w badaniach relacji między państwem a innymi podmiotami/aktorami społecznymi, niewykorzystywana jednak do tej pory w badaniach nad polskim dyskursem publicznym. Podstawową tezą artykułu jest przekonanie, że brak paniki moralnej dotyczącej praw dzieci, ich dobrostanu i bezpieczeństwa, może być efektem niskiej pozycji tej problematyki w agendzie problemów społecznych poruszanych w debacie publicznej, szczególnie w porównaniu ze znaczeniem przypisywanym prawom tradycyjnie rozumianej i definiowanej rodziny. Analiza empiryczna dotyczy trwającej się w latach 2008‒2010 debaty publicznej na temat zmian w ustawie o przeciwdziałaniu przemocy w rodzinie. Jako schemat analityczny wykorzystano w tekście model hybrydalny analiz paniki moralnej, integrujący wcześniej dominujące podejścia (model sekwencyjny i atrybucyjny)

Od underclass do Homo sovieticusa: Czynnik ludzki hamulcem modernizacji

This article aims to present the discursive processes that were used to justify the path chosen to implement the social and economic transformation to capitalism in Poland. Special attention is paid to the role of elites in shaping a public discourse which legitimized the significant pauperization in society and growth of income inequalities as being conditioned on individual defects and the “civilizational incompetence” of those at the bottom of the social structure. These citizens of Poland were presented as a constraint and obstacle to achieving a faster pace of modernization processes. This has influenced the thinking of politicians involved in policy-making at the national level, as well as the attitudes of those involved in the implementation of welfare measures at the local level. Furthermore, it has contributed to the unspoken consensus of all mainstream political parties over the neoliberal reforms in the economy and social policy.Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie pewnych procesów dyskursywnych uzasadniających wybraną ścieżkę społeczno-ekonomicznej transformacji ku kapitalizmowi w Polsce. Szczególną uwagę poświęca się roli elit w kształtowaniu dyskursu publicznego legitymizującego znaczącą pauperyzację społeczeństwa oraz wzrost nierówności społecznych jako wynikający z indywidualnych deficytów oraz “cywilizacyjnej niekompetencji” jednostek znajdujących się na dole struktury społecznej. Tych polskich obywateli prezentowano jako hamulec i przeszkodę w osiągnięciu szybszego tempa procesów modernizacyjnych. Wpłynęło to zarówno na sposób myślenia polityków zaangażowanych w podejmowanie decyzji na szczeblu ogólnopolskim, jak i na postawy tych, wdrażających działania społeczne na poziomie lokalnym. Ponadto, przyczyniło się do niepisanego konsensusu wśród partii politycznych głównego nurtu odnośnie neoliberalnych reform w gospodarce i polityce społecznej
